This book provides up-to-date guidance on optimal care of the patient with an underactive bladder. It covers all aspects of management, including clinical evaluation, urodynamic diagnosis, standard care, drug therapy, and emerging treatment options. Nursing issues are extensively discussed, and advice offered on the use of catheters and avoidance of catheter-related complications. Further chapters address epidemiology, pathophysiology, animal modeling, and health care costs. While most practitioners are familiar with overactive bladder, the converse condition of underactive bladder has generally remained far below the radar. As a consequence, there is still a lack of empirically validated treatments and effective treatment strategies. This is a matter of concern, especially as the burden of the condition is expected to rise in line with the aging of global populations. The Underactive Bladder is a major step forward in raising awareness, exploring best practices in patient care, and searching for future therapies. It will be invaluable for urologists, geriatricians, other specialists, researchers, and nurses.

The Toilet Book attempts to shed light on a topic that most people are too embarrassed to discuss, bowel movements and urination. The book bridges the gap between going to the restroom and good health. It describes all the different colors, smells, looks, and shapes they may see after using the restroom. The book also describes exactly what each color, smell, shape, look, etc. means as it relates to human health. The Toilet Book gives readers information what type of behavior causes unhealthy urinary and digestive systems. It also provides easy steps to take towards improving both systems. Since the topic of discussion can be a bit intimidating or embarrassing to some, the book attempts as much humor as possible. The chapter titles are creative and there is just the right mix of playfulness mixed in with a topic that is more serious than some tend to realize. Overall, after a reader has finished this book they should have an understanding of how things we eat and drink get from plates and cups all the way to the toilet. We should also understand that what shows up in the toilet after using the restroom can tell all lot about one’s health. Lastly, they will also understand how the toilet and using the rest room is related to weight loss, cancer, and high cholesterol. The Toilet Book's sole purpose is to remove the embarrassment behind discussing words like bowel movement, defecation, feces, poop, pee, urination, #1 and #2 while educating in a fun way at the same time. I hope readers will gain insight on their current health behavior and make changes if needed to improve their overall health Keywords: Health, Nutrition, Wellness, Fitness, Bowel Movement, Urination, Toilet, Weight Loss, Food

The First Step is Admitting You Have a Problem Urinary incontinence is rarely talked about, and when it is mentioned, it's often the tagline for a joke among friends, coworkers, or the cast of Saturday Night Live. But having a weak bladder and being unable to control when you urinate is not a laughing matter. As a private practicing urologist, in practice for 15 years I have seen the direct impact that urinary incontinence has had on my patient's lives. I have treated and have had the privilege to know several women who have suffered through the humiliation and embarrassment that this condition has brought them. They often wear dark clothing, and have to be very careful about how far they travel from home. These women have to change major aspects of their lives simply to counteract their urinary incontinence. They also have to spend a lot of extra money. Many of my patients who are already strapped for cash, have to add yet another expense to their monthly allotment in the form of costly pads, and in some cases, even diapers. Pretty soon their whole life seems to revolve around their urinary incontinence, dictating what they can or cannot do in order to just avoid an embarrassing situation. Urinary incontinence and bladder weakening doesn't happen all at once, it is usually a degenerative disease that gets worse over time. Many of my patients have delayed getting checked out by a physician because they are either too embarrassed or are not aware of what can be done to treat their condition. Often enough, it is only when they reach their absolute breaking point that they come and pay us a visit. They are fearful, worried and sometimes even ashamed of a condition that they have no control over. But after they leave their doctor's appointment and find out how they can be treated or maybe even cured, their fear turns to pure joy. I can't tell you how many times I have gotten hugs in the office after I've cured someone of urinary incontinence. This is no exaggeration on my part, it happens on a daily basis. And one of the most common things that a patient has said to me when they realize what can be done to treat their UI, is invariably, "Why did I wait so long?" They just don't realize the options that are available. The first step in treating most individuals is just to get them into the office for a checkup in the first place. This is why I wrote this book. For those of you that are having issues with urinary incontinence yet are hesitant or afraid to seek treatment, I hope that what you read here encourages you to make an appointment and get yourself checked out. My name is Nicole Eisenbrown, I am a private practicing urologist, and I hope to see you soon. Understanding the problem Now that we have acknowledged that we have a problem, we need understand that not all incontinence is the same. This is a big misconception I see with people who come into see me in the office. Even many physicians do not really appreciate that incontinence can be the result of various pathologies. The end result may be unwanted leakage of urine, but knowing what is causing the leakage is critical in determining what treatment options are available to treat the problem. I will briefly describe each of them for you here and then go into much greater depth on each one later on. This way you can jump right to the problems you think you have. The most common ones that were going to talk about our stress urinary incontinence, urge urinary incontinence, mixed incontinence, overflow incontinence and functional incontinence.

For those living with incontinence, an overactive bladder can make day-to-day life unmanageable. Mayo Clinic on Incontinence is a modern-day guide to the new medications, therapies, treatment plans, and surgical options available to those living with incontinence. If you’re suffering from unwanted symptoms of incontinence—like an uncontrollable bladder and bowel problems—you’re not alone. Millions of Americans struggle daily with issues related to urinary or fecal incontinence, and the effects can be invasive and debilitating. And while many believe incontinence is an age-related issue, the condition prevents patients of all ages from enjoying an active and carefree lifestyle. What most Americans don’t know is that incontinence can be improved and, in some cases, even cured. Simple changes to everyday behaviors can ease symptoms of incontinence, while medications and minimally invasive procedures, like injections, can bring long-lasting relief to patients. And in more serious cases, surgical procedures can assist in relieving and often curing problems related to the condition. Penned by two of Mayo Clinic’s leading urogynecologists, Mayo Clinic on Incontinence outlines the common causes of incontinence and provides tailored treatment advice for patients of all demographics. Readers will also find tools for enhanced living with incontinence, including tips to reduce the risk of developing incontinence, minimize issues while out in public, and boost overall sexual health and wellness. With more than 10,000 patients treated for incontinence by the Mayo Clinic each year, this book provides a source of hope from the experts who are leading the efforts to treat and cure incontinence.
