Many of Tony Blair's policy decisions in the Israeli-Palestinian arena were controversial and politically costly. Blair, Labour and Palestine argues that gaps between him and much of his party were rooted in different world views. A positive attitude towards Israel came to be seen as a defining mark of New Labour loyalists. However, contrasting views among left-leaning strands in the party reflected a broader set of ideological rifts. Such differences became increasingly significant in the wake of 9/11 as British policymakers sought to understand and respond to Islamic anger against the West. Based on interviews conducted by the author and on previously unseen documents, this unique case study shows how the distinctive world view of a political leader defined foreign policy, by shaping Britain's response to Islamist violence and its interconnected approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Author Toby Greene also examines the extent to which ministers and officials considered shifting foreign policy in response to fears of Islamist radicalisation in the UK, and Blair's role in stopping this trend, especially after the 7/7 bombings.

THE STORY BEGINS ON 27 JUNE 2007. THAT WAS THE DAY TONY BLAIR OFFICIALLY RESIGNED AS PRIME MINISTER, WAS APPOINTED MIDDLE EAST PEACE ENVOY, AND SET ABOUT MAKING HIMSELF SERIOUSLY RICH. Since leaving office in 2007, the empire of Tony Blair has grown exponentially. As a businessman he has been unprecedentedly successful for a former public servant, with a large property portfolio and an estimated £80 million of earnings accrued in just a few short years. But how has he managed to achieve this? Being an ex-Prime Minister comes with certain advantages, and besides his excellent state pension and twenty-four-hour security team, Blair enjoys the best contacts that money can buy – as do those willing to pay him for access to those contacts. Consequently, Tony Blair Associates' clients can be found around the world, and include the controversial presidents of Kazakhstan and Burma. There is also Blair's role as special envoy in the Middle East. While his record as a peacemaker is in doubt, the position has brought him into contact with a variety of oil-rich potentates in the region who now number among his most profitable clients. Blair Inc.: The Wars, the Money, the Scandals takes a close look at the complex financial structures in Blair's world. From the many layers of tax liability to the multiple conflicts of interest produced by his increasing web of relationships, this book exposes the private dealings of this very public figure.

The Blair Supremacy written by Lewis Minkin and has been published by Manchester University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-04-02 with Political Science categories.

Lewis Minkin had untrammelled access to Tony Blair for many years, in his dual role as an advisor to and analyst of the Labour party. Because of his immense experience in observing the party over a long period of time he has been able to tap into unique sources that would not be available to any other scholar. In this exciting new book, The Blair Supremacy, he lifts the lid on Blair's style of party management during a period when Blair drove the internal organisation of the party through a ferment of new developments under the name 'New Labour'. The methods and processes used to effect deep and lasting change to the workings of the party and consolidate his own position of power are examined and reassessed critically, with a strong focus on three fundamental questions – how did Blair manage to achieve this organisational change in such a successful fashion? Was it, as has been projected, a supremacy? Why did it all end so badly, with Blair handing over the reins to Gordon Brown at a difficult time and thereby almost ensuring the party's election defeat in 2010? The answer to these and many other questions are delivered in this probing interrogation of the distinctive character, mechanisms and development of Blair's unique style of party management. Minkin has an intimate and detailed knowledge of all aspects of Labour party organisation and politics and an unrivalled grasp of the subtleties and nuances of its internal relationships.

Colonialism And The Jews written by Ethan B. Katz and has been published by Indiana University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-01-30 with History categories.

The lively essays collected here explore colonial history, culture, and thought as it intersects with Jewish studies. Connecting the Jewish experience with colonialism to mobility and exchange, diaspora, internationalism, racial discrimination, and Zionism, the volume presents the work of Jewish historians who recognize the challenge that colonialism brings to their work and sheds light on the diverse topics that reflect the myriad ways that Jews engaged with empire in modern times. Taken together, these essays reveal the interpretive power of the "Imperial Turn" and present a rethinking of the history of Jews in colonial societies in light of postcolonial critiques and destabilized categories of analysis. A provocative discussion forum about Zionism as colonialism is also included.

There is a sickness at the heart of left-wing British politics, and though predominantly below the surface, it is silently spreading, becoming ever more malignant. With three separate inquiries into anti-Semitism in the Labour Party in the first six months of 2016 alone, it seems hard to believe that, until the 1980s, the British left was broadly pro-Israel. And while the election of Jeremy Corbyn may have thrown a harsher spotlight on the crisis, it is by no means a recent phenomenon. The widening gulf between British Jews and the anti-Israel left - born out of antiapartheid campaigns and now allying itself with Islamist extremists who demand Israel's destruction - did not happen overnight or by chance: political activists made it happen. This book reveals who they were, why they chose Palestine and how they sold their cause to the left. Based on new academic research into the origins of this phenomenon, combined with the author's daily work observing political extremism, contemporary hostility to Israel, and anti-Semitism, this book brings new insight to the left's increasingly controversial 'Jewish problem'.
