This e-book will review special features of the cerebral circulation and how they contribute to the physiology of the brain. It describes structural and functional properties of the cerebral circulation that are unique to the brain, an organ with high metabolic demands and the need for tight water and ion homeostasis. Autoregulation is pronounced in the brain, with myogenic, metabolic and neurogenic mechanisms contributing to maintain relatively constant blood flow during both increases and decreases in pressure. In addition, unlike peripheral organs where the majority of vascular resistance resides in small arteries and arterioles, large extracranial and intracranial arteries contribute significantly to vascular resistance in the brain. The prominent role of large arteries in cerebrovascular resistance helps maintain blood flow and protect downstream vessels during changes in perfusion pressure. The cerebral endothelium is also unique in that its barrier properties are in some way more like epithelium than endothelium in the periphery. The cerebral endothelium, known as the blood-brain barrier, has specialized tight junctions that do not allow ions to pass freely and has very low hydraulic conductivity and transcellular transport. This special configuration modifies Starling's forces in the brain microcirculation such that ions retained in the vascular lumen oppose water movement due to hydrostatic pressure. Tight water regulation is necessary in the brain because it has limited capacity for expansion within the skull. Increased intracranial pressure due to vasogenic edema can cause severe neurologic complications and death.

The Human Brain Circulation written by Rosemary D. Bevan and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1994-07 with Medical categories.

The Human Brain Circulation offers an up-to-date synthesis and summary of current knowledge of the cerebrovascular circulation, with emphasis on the study of isolated vessels. The contributors describe the normal vasculature and the many complex changes that occur with age. Where knowledge of human vessels is deficient, research on animal tissues is included. The book is significant because it challenges some of the traditional assumptions, based on animal studies, of the mechanisms that control the human brain vasculature. The contemporary view presented includes the roles of shear stress and intravascular pressure on the arterial circulation. Among the topics discussed are the receptors for vasoactive substances; the molecular aspects of endothelial function in hemostasis; inflammation and thrombosis; the effect of hypertension; the pathophysiology of vasospasm, ischemia, and reperfusion; and the actions of free radicals. Techniques for the in vivo study of cerebrovascular function are also described. The Human Brain Circulation presents a definitive understanding of this important vasculature and clearly defines the future direction for research into human cerebrovascular disease and its treatment.

Angelo Mosso S Circulation Of Blood In The Human Brain written by Angelo Mosso and has been published by Oxford University Press, USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014 with Medical categories.

The pioneer in studies of changes in brain flow that underlie modern brain imaging was Angelo Mosso. This volume provides for the first time an English translation of his historic 1881 volume, together with a rich commentary by two leaders of modern brain imaging, Marcus Raichle and Gordon M. Shepherd. The volume offers unique insights into the origins of brain imaging and also the rise of modern cognitive neuroscience. It will be of interest to neuroscientists, neurologists, psychologists, psychiatrists, historians of science and medicine, and the general public.

Cerebral Autoregulation written by Stephen Payne and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-06-24 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This Brief provides a comprehensive introduction to the control of blood flow in the brain. Beginning with the basic physiology of autoregulation, the author goes on to discuss measurement techniques, mathematical models, methods of analysis, and relevant clinical conditions, all within this single volume. The author draws together this disparate field, and lays the groundwork for future research directions. The text gives an up-to-date review of the state of the art in cerebral autoregulation, which is particularly relevant as cerebral autoregulation moves from the laboratory to the bedside. Cerebral Autoregulation will be useful to researchers in the physical sciences such as mathematical biology, medical physics, and biomedical engineering whose work is concerned with the brain. Researchers in the medical sciences and clinicians dealing with the brain and blood flow, as well as industry professionals developing techniques such as ultrasound, MRI, and CT will also find this Brief of interest.

This volume covers the most important aspects of cerebral blood flow (CBF) from bench to bedside. It first defines the basic physiology of CBF, those qualities that make it unique or are shared with other organs and their clinical implications. There follows a section on CBF pathophysiology that explores many of the known and proposed mechanisms of cerebral ischemia in stroke and trauma states. The third section describes the numerous and powerful means available to measure blood flow, tissue function and overall perfusion. These are essential measures if one is to assess the effectiveness of therapies aimed at preventing or reversing cerebral ischemia. The final section describes the interesting and often successful recent clinical trials aimed at preventing or reversing cerebral ischemia. This collection of multicenter trial data and their implications in one volume is unique in this field. This book addresses all the major aspects of CBF from basic issues to clinical practice.
