In this study, different turbulence models like k-epsilon and k-omega SST model are tested by comparing them against experimental data given by Deshpande and Giddens 1976. The stenosed geometry of 75 % area reduction is used for comparison. CFD code FLUENT 6.2 is used to solve the flow equations and a steady state flow with 2D axi-symmetric geometry is considered with Reynolds number of 5000. For lamnar flow in CCA, Reynolds numbers 50, 100 and 200 were used and the results were compared with the experimental data as given by Ahmed Giddens and Mabon. The results for laminar study were also obtained by varying the degree of occlusion i.e. 75 %, 56 % and two geometries with 89% area reduction. The models were named as M0, M1, M2 and M3. In the study, we found that model M3 is highly severe stenosis and a medical scanned image approximating this kind of geometry must be seriously examined.

The pathological complications of atherosclerosis, namely heart disease and stroke, remain the leading cause of mortality in the world. Cardiovascular illness is highly prevalent among the American population. One manifesto of cardiovascular disease is Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) which is caused by atherosclerosis in the arteries. Atherosclerosis is a vascular disease that reduces arterial lumen size through plaque deposition and arterial wall thickening. The flow patterns in the arteries are highly modulating along with the cardiac cycle and a strong function of the waveform created by the heartbeat. In this study, a computational simulation model is developed to analyze blood flow distribution in a femoral artery network based on Navier-Stokes equation. A comparative analysis of blood flow through femoral artery is done based on Newtonian and non-Newtonian blood flow by using Carreau-Yasuda model subjected to a waveform based on a cardiac cycle. The non-Newtonian CFD flow analysis model is use to analyze blood flow distributions in a femoral artery along with the adjacent capillary porous tissue medium. This simulation model is used to analyze the flow and stress field in a healthy and atherosclerosis affected femoral arteries. Velocity, pressure and Wall Shear Stress fields over cardiac cycle are analyzed to demonstrate that adverse flow field created upstream and downstream of the blockage that may cause enhanced growth in size of the blockage.

Flow Through A Partially Blocked Artery Downstream Of A Stented Region written by Aneesha Gogineni and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011 with Electronic dissertations categories.

A numerical analysis of flow through a stenosed artery downstream of a stented region is presented. Three different Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved stents (Bx Velocity, NIR, and Multilink Zeta) are considered in analyzing pressure drop and flow rates at the blockage and outlet of artery. Blood flow inside the artery is assumed to be steady. The inlet pressures are defined as the mean arterial pressures in the stented artery using all stages of blood pressures. The pressure drop and volumetric flow rate increases at the blocked artery with increase in mean arterial pressures. In contrast to the previous results the pressure drop and volumetric flow rates decreases at the narrow end of the artery. A comparison was made between all the three different stents which determines the highly optimum stent geometry. An unsteady flow analysis is performed using NIR stent since it is proved to highly optimum when compared to other stents. The velocity and mass flow rates at the outlet are relatively high for unsteady flow rates when compared to steady flow rates. A grid independence study was also performed for all the three stents for accuracy. The obtained results can be used in determining the restenosis rates in patients after NIR stent implantation.

Numerical Analysis Of Blood Flow In An Aortocoronary Bypass Model written by Foo Kok and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015 with Electronic dissertations categories.

Aortocoronary bypass (ACB) surgery is a treatment to bypass a blocked artery using a graft. Approximately 500,000 bypass surgeries are performed in the U.S. each year. Of these, about 15% to 20% have an early-phase failure, typically in the proximal region. A natural question which arises is whether fluid dynamic geometry plays a role in the patency. Since only a few studies have considered proximal region geometry, this motivates the present study. Blood flow in a coronary artery bypass often involves very complex fluid dynamic behavior. Numerical simulation is employed to investigate the flow field environment of the proximal region of a bypass. A series of different branching models with laminar inflow are considered to systematically investigate the geometrical effect under different flow conditions. Model types (with branch diameter to host diameter ratio D2/D1

Flow Characteristics And Wall Shear Stresses In Bifurcated Peripheral Arteries written by Aneesha Gogineni and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015 with Electronic dissertations categories.

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is further complicated by co-morbidities like diabetes, hypertension and anemia. Previous studies on coronary and carotid arteries indicate that bifurcation at the arteries has an effect in the blood flow. When plaque develops at the bifurcation, it affects the velocity, blood pressure, shear stresses and flow rates of blood. Femoral artery flow is modeled with blockage at different bifurcation angles (30°,45° and 60°) and it is analyzed at different conditions. A review of stents shows that there are several limitations associated with stents in co-morbid PAD patients. A blocked bifurcated femoral artery is inserted with self expanding stent model and the blockage is modeled downstream of the stented region. Flow characteristics like velocity and wall shear stress in stented and blocked femoral artery are compared with plane artery (no stenosis) to study the effect of stent placements. Postural positions are found to affect the systolic and diastolic blood pressures in an artery. The study shows velocities and wall shear stresses in anterior and posterior tibial artery at different bifurcation angles and postures, and determined specific postures affect diabetic patients in different ways. Existing in-vitro studies indicate that plaque most commonly develops downstream of the knee region such as in a popliteal artery. Popliteal artery is modeled at various lower extremity angles and analyzed at varying co-morbidities. The analysis shows a highly affected bifurcation angle in a diseased artery, posture and knee curvature affects peripheral arteries to worse. The wall shear stress values from the analysis may be used for developing therapeutic drugs using nano particles.

Research centering on blood flow in the heart continues to hold an important position, especially since a better understanding of the subject may help reduce the incidence of coronary arterial disease and heart attacks. This book summarizes recent advances in the field; it is the product of fruitful cooperation among international scientists who met in Japan in May, 1990 to discuss the regulation of coronary blood flow.
