In 1857, over 100 men, women, and children in a wagon train from Arkansas were murdered in southern Utah by local settlers aided by Southern Paiute warriors. For 50 years, Mormon historian Juanita Brooks's The Mountain Meadows Massacre has been the standard work on the subject. Here, independent historian and Salt Lake Tribune columnist Bagley claims only to extend Brooks's work. But by using documents not available to Brooks and by following her example in pursuing the truth wherever it led him while not going beyond the available evidence, he confirms her private opinion that territorial Mormon leader and governor Brigham Young was heavily involved in both the massacre and its cover-up.

Cowley, himself an Apostle of the Church, and faithful servant of our Lord and Master. As the publisher and, present writer fell a holy joy in the preparation and delivery, to the world, of Apostle Cowley's book, so he now feels, in equal degree, a great happiness in presenting these annals of the Prophet and Patriarch, and the other noble men of their blood, who have consecrated their lives to the Cause of Truth. Nor can the publisher feel content to send the volume forth without calling attention to the significance of this record. At different times in the history of the Church, its persecutors and its opponents have congratulated themselves that, either by slaughter or by persesecution, the race of the Inspired Founder of the Faith had been lost to its membership here on earth.
