The massacre at Mountain Meadows on September 11, 1857, was the single most violent attack on a wagon train in the thirty-year history of the Oregon and California trails. Yet it has been all but forgotten. Will Bagley’s Blood of the Prophets is an award-winning, riveting account of the attack on the Baker-Fancher wagon train by Mormons in the local militia and a few Paiute Indians. Based on extensive investigation of the events surrounding the murder of over 120 men, women, and children, and drawing from a wealth of primary sources, Bagley explains how the murders occurred, reveals the involvement of territorial governor Brigham Young, and explores the subsequent suppression and distortion of events related to the massacre by the Mormon Church and others.

Twas the shrunken soul of the traitor That whined in a coign of the dark; And the fiends were aroused from slumber, When Cerberus began to bark. "Methought that I spoke" said Julian, Who betrayed God's own demesne; "And I," said the ghost of Caesar, "Heard the dying groans of the slain."

In 1857, over 100 men, women, and children in a wagon train from Arkansas were murdered in southern Utah by local settlers aided by Southern Paiute warriors. For 50 years, Mormon historian Juanita Brooks's The Mountain Meadows Massacre has been the standard work on the subject. Here, independent historian and Salt Lake Tribune columnist Bagley claims only to extend Brooks's work. But by using documents not available to Brooks and by following her example in pursuing the truth wherever it led him while not going beyond the available evidence, he confirms her private opinion that territorial Mormon leader and governor Brigham Young was heavily involved in both the massacre and its cover-up.

Excerpt from The Blood of the Prophets: Biographical Sketches The Biographical Sketches comprised within this little volume are selected from that very important hook recently issued under the title of "Prophets and Patriarchs," by Elder Matthias L. Cowley, himself an Apostle of the Church, and faithful servant of our Lord and Master. As the publisher and, present writer fell a holy joy in the preparation and delivery, to the world, of Apostle Cowley's book, so he now feels, in equal degree, a great happiness in presenting these annals of the Prophet and Patriarch, and the other noble men of their blood, who have consecrated their lives to the Cause of Truth. Nor can the publisher feel content to send the volume forth without calling attention to the significance of this record. At different times in the history of the Church, its persecutors and its opponents have congratulated themselves that, either by slaughter or by persesecution, the race of the Inspired Founder of the Faith had been lost to its membership here on earth. What a rebuke to their vain glory, and what a vindication of the integrity of the Prophet and Patriarch and their relatives, is this little book! Hundreds of the relatives of Joseph and Hyrum have lived firm in the Faith, holding positions of power in the Priesthood; and of the hundreds, Nine, as shown by these biographical sketches, have been called by the voice of God as Prophets and Patriarchs in His Church; The persecutors of the Prophet and Patriarch, in their vain folly, imagined that the Church would perish with the death of Joseph and Hyrum, and that the seed of these noble men would be scattered, never more to have identification with God's work, restored to earth for the last lime. And yet, in the Lord's own rounding out time, another Joseph has been called to preside as Prophet, Seer and Rerelator, and the Church multiplies in strength and numbers, is established in such firm security that the world, while still opposing, has lost all hope of destroying. To the Saints throughout the earth, and particularly to all the men and women in whose veins course the blood of the Prophet and Patriarch, this book is offered as undying proof of the integrity of the Lord's Anointed and their descendants. In an especial sense, the book is dedicated to President Joseph Fielding Smith, who now holds, on earth, the keys which were delivered to his uncle, the Prophet, and his father, the Patriarch. Isaiah was Samuel's and Samuel was Isaiah's. That was the way it was since the beginning, and the way it was to be until the end. In the barn they tended to the animals, but also to each other, transforming the hollowed-out shed into a place of human refuge, a source of intimacy and hope in a world ruled by vicious masters. But when an older man—a fellow slave—seeks to gain favor by preaching the master's gospel on the plantation, the enslaved begin to turn on their own. Isaiah and Samuel's love, which was once so simple, is seen as sinful and a clear danger to the plantation's harmony. With a lyricism reminiscent of Toni Morrison, Robert Jones, Jr., fiercely summons the voices of slaver and enslaved alike, from Isaiah and Samuel to the calculating slave master to the long line of women that surround them, women who have carried the soul of the plantation on their shoulders. As tensions build and the weight of centuries—of ancestors and future generations to come—culminates in a climactic reckoning, The Prophets fearlessly reveals the pain and suffering of inheritance, but is also shot through with hope, beauty, and truth, portraying the enormous, heroic power of love.
