One of the most famous assaults of the Gallipoli campaign took place over four bloody days in August 1915 across an area no bigger than a football field. On a small plateau in Gallipoli known as Lone Pine - named for the lonesome pine that stood there - this fierce battle was fought. In the late afternoon of 6 August 1915, the Australians orchestrated an attack aimed at breaking the Turkish stronghold on Lone Pine. The fighting on both sides during these attacks and counter - attacks involved throwing bombs over hastily erected barriers, mad dashes through the trenches, firing off a few shots at close range, hand - to - hand combat, tripping over the dead and avoiding the dying and wounded. Four days of intense fighting and close combat resulted in the loss of thousands of lives on both sides. In this short period of time, seven of Australia's nine Gallipoli VCs were earned - a powerful tribute to the courage and sacrifice of the soldiers involved. Simon Cameron's painstakingly researched account, Lonesome Pine, allows us to now gain a greater understanding of the sacrifice of so many in such a short period of time. This book describes the days leading up to the attack and the horror of the battle in gripping detail, as well as giving an insight into the lives of the men who fought, died in and survived the Battle of Lone Pine.

Captain Albert Mure, a company commander in the 5th Battalion The Royal Scots, spent forty-three days in Gallipoli - far longer than many men who fought there would survive. In those few weeks, this brave, stoical officer was reduced from a fit, determined leader of men to a physical and mental wreck. In simple and honest language, Mure conveys the drama of the first landings, knowing that very shortly afterwards he and his men would be ashore and experiencing the same fate; his sympathy for those under his command is clear. Although suffering from shell shock, when the time came for him to leave the peninsular, he nevertheless felt like a deserter, remarking that, 'you can carry a no-longer-fit soldier's body out of the firing-line, but not his soul.' Originally published in 1919, Mure's story of his experiences at Gallipoli is full of a rawness and immediacy that I believe makes it worthy of a place amongst the many Great War memoirs.

The August Offensive or ‘Anzac Breakout’ at Gallipoli was an attempt to break the stalemate of the campaign. It saw some of the bloodiest fighting since the landing as Commonwealth and Turkish troops fought desperate battles at Lone Pine, German Officers’ Trench, Turkish Quinn’s, The Chessboard, The Nek, The Farm, Hill Q, Chunuk Bair, and Hill 971. The offensive was designed to allow the allied forces to ‘break out’ of the Anzac beachhead below the Sari Bair Range. The capture of Chunuk Bair by the New Zealanders resulted in some of the bloodiest fighting at Gallipoli and was key to the entire August offensive. While it was taken and held for a few days - it’s recapture by the Turks on 10 August 1915 decided the fate of the Gallipoli Campaign. Within four months the Allies were forced to evacuate the peninsula, leaving it to the Turks - a decisive victory for the Ottoman Empire Death on Bloody Ridge: Chunuk Bair - the battle that decided the fate of the Gallipoli Campaign, focuses solely on this one decisive battle.

In early August 1915, after months of stalemate in the trenches on Gallipoli, British and Dominion troops launched a series of assaults in an all-out attempt to break the deadlock and achieve a decisive victory. The ‘August offensive’ resulted in heartbreaking failure and costly losses on both sides. Many of the sites of the bloody struggle became famous names: Lone Pine, the Nek, Chunuk Bair, Hill 60, Suvla Bay. Debate has continued to the present day over the strategy and planning, the real or illusory opportunities for success, and the causes of failure in what became the last throw of the dice for the Allies. Some argue that these costly attacks were a lost opportunity; others maintain that the outcomes were simply inevitable. This new book about the Gallipoli battles arises out of a major international conference at the Australian War Memorial in 2010 to mark the 95th anniversary of the Gallipoli campaign. The conference drew leading military historians from around the world to bring multi-national viewpoints to the many intriguing questions still debated about Gallipoli. Keynote speaker, Professor Robin Prior of the University of Adelaide, author of Gallipoli: the end of the myth (2009), led a range of international authorities from Australia, New Zealand, Britain, France, Germany, India and Turkey to present their most recent research findings. The result was significant: never before had such a range of views been presented, with fresh German and Turkish perspectives offered alongside those of British and Australasian historians. For the resulting book, the papers have been edited and the text has been augmented with soldiers’ letters and diary accounts, as well as a large number of photographs and maps.

Our Friend the Enemy is the first detailed history of the Gallipoli campaign at Anzac since Charles Bean’s Official History. Viewed from both sides of the wire and described in first-hand accounts. Australian Captain Herbert Layh recounted that as they approached the beach on 25 April that, once we were behind cover the Turks turned their .. [fire] on us, and gave us a lively 10 minutes. A poor chap next to me was hit three times. He begged me to shoot him, but luckily for him a fourth bullet got him and put him out of his pain. Later that day, Sergeant Charles Saunders, a New Zealand engineer, described his first taste of battle, The Turks were entrenched some 50-100 yards from the edge of the face of the gully and their machine guns swept the edges. Line after line of our men went up, some lines didn’t take two paces over the crest when down they went to a man and on came another line. Gunner Recep Trudal of the Turkish 27th Regiment wrote of the fierce Turkish counter-attack on 19 May designed to push the Anzac’s back into the sea, It started at morning prayer call time, and then it went on and on, never stopped. You know there was no break for eating or anything … Attack was our command. That was what the Pasha said. Once he says “Attack”, you attack, and you either die or you survive.

With the centenary of the First World War upon us in 2015, Richard Stowers has written this book to increase the awareness of the unpretentious gallantry and service by New Zealanders during the Gallipoli campaign. The book details the bravery and distinguished service of men and women of the 1st echelon of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force during the Gallipoli campaign. In some ways those listed in the book were the lucky ones whose courage was officially recognised. Many more who did heroic acts were not so fortunate, and their actions were never officially recognised due to the fortunes of war. Often overshadowed by the exploits of the Australians who were awarded nine Victoria Crosses during the Gallipoli campaign, time and time again the New Zealanders were denied gallantry medals by their high command. New Zealand can be rightly proud of these men and women who did extraordinary deeds during times of danger, hardship and peril.

2019 Winner, Military Fiction, Independent Press Awards 2019 Gold Medal Winner, Historical Fiction, Military Writers Society of America 2019 Finalist, Military Fiction, American Fiction Awards This harrowing journey through World War I begins aboard the RMS Lusitania and ends on the edge of the world. For the Scots-American McReynolds brothers, World War I began with a German torpedo that slammed into the Lusitania. Despite frantic rescue efforts, they watch their family drown in front of their eyes. Having escaped the doomed ship in frigid waters off Ireland, they are rescued by four young Irishmen and together they vow to strike back in the war that was cutting a bloody swath through Europe in 1915. Searching for a unit that was bound to see action, they enlist with the vaunted Seaforth Highlanders, a Scottish regiment with a fearsome reputation. Soon they are tossed into the bloody cauldron of Gallipoli, where they must learn to fight and struggle to survive in one of the most ill-conceived and brutal campaigns of the war. Under a baking Aegean sun, surrounded by dead and maimed comrades, and facing a brutal and determined enemy sworn to Jihad, the brothers discover crucial differences in their reactions to the carnage of infantry combat. In the reeking, bloody trenches of Gallipoli, war becomes a very ugly school—where few live long enough to graduate. “From the sinking of the Lusitania to the battlefield cauldron of Gallipoli, RJ MacDonald weaves an action-packed story that leaves the reader breathless.” Military Writers Society of America “To fans of the genre of military fiction, RJ MacDonald’s, ‘A Distant Field’ might well be the book of the year." World War Media “... the battle sequences are both horrifying and exciting. This is a well-written novel, and if you are a collector of books on the First World War, I suggest you add this novel to your collection.” Historical Novel Society “It’s straight in at the deep end, as it opens with two brothers and their family on board the Lusitania when it gets torpedoed. This is breathless stuff... It’s all well written and a good yarn...” Militaria & History: The Armourer Magazine “RJ MacDonald's writing is vivid and gripping. Excellent historical fiction.” Professor Jonathan P. Roth, San Jose State University, Director, Burdick Military History Project “His mastery of descriptive art is reminiscent of some of John Steinbeck’s stories..." Professor Hal Elliott, Weber State University and Scots American Military Society “...a very compelling story... attention to detail sentence-for-sentence is stunning, and really builds the world while leaving the reader enough to imagine with." This brief account of the 1st Battalion of the Royal Munster Fusiliers at Gallipoli is built on the letters and other accounts of the participants which were published at the time and are very much of the time in their style and thought. Many of those who have an interest in the history of the Munsters will be aware of the diaries, etc, of G. W. Geddes, G. W. Nightingale and Denis Moriarty much of which are available online or are quoted in many well-known publications. This account sidelines these well-known Munsters to concentrate on the men and lesser-known officers of the Battalion in order to tell the story of the 1st Munsters at Gallipoli in 1915. It also includes an extensive casualty list and other genealogical details.
