Ama Codjoe’s highly anticipated debut collection brings generous light to the inner dialogues of women as they bathe, create art, make and lose love. Each poem rises with the urgency of a fully awakened sensual life. Codjoe’s poems explore how the archetype of the artist complicates the typical expectations of women: be gazed upon, be silent, be selfless, reproduce. Dialoguing with and through art, Bluest Nude considers alternative ways of holding and constructing the self. From Lorna Simpson to Gwendolyn Brooks to Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, contemporary and ancestral artists populate Bluest Nude in a choreography of Codjoe’s making. Precise and halting, this finely wrought, riveting collection is marked by an acute rendering of highly charged emotional spaces. Purposefully shifting between the role of artist and subject, seer and seen, Codjoe’s poems ask what the act of looking does to a person—public looking, private looking, and that most intimate, singular spectacle of looking at one’s self. What does it mean to see while being seen? In poems that illuminate the tension between the possibilities of openness and and its impediments, Bluest Nude offers vulnerability as a medium to be immersed in and, ultimately, shared as a kind of power: “There are as many walls inside me / as there are bones at the bottom of the sea,” Codjoe writes in the masterful titular poem. “I want to be seen clearly or not at all.” “The end of the world has ended,” Codjoe’s speaker announces, “and desire is still / all I crave.” Startling and seductive in equal measure, this formally ambitious collection represents a powerful, luminous beginning.

A vibrant collection of personal and lyric essays in conversation with archival objects of Black history and memory. What are the politics of nature? Who owns it, where is it, what role does it play in our lives? Does it need to be tamed? Are we ourselves natural? In A Darker Wilderness, a constellation of luminary writers reflect on the significance of nature in their lived experience and on the role of nature in the lives of Black folks in the United States. Each of these essays engages with a single archival object, whether directly or obliquely, exploring stories spanning hundreds of years and thousands of miles, traveling from roots to space and finding rich Blackness everywhere. Erin Sharkey considers Benjamin Banneker’s 1795 almanac, as she follows the passing of seasons in an urban garden in Buffalo. Naima Penniman reflects on a statue of Haitian revolutionary François Makandal, within her own pursuit of environmental justice. Ama Codjoe meditates on rain, hair, protest, and freedom via a photo of a young woman during a civil rights demonstration in Alabama. And so on—with wide-ranging contributions from Carolyn Finney, Ronald Greer II, Alexis Pauline Gumbs, Sean Hill, Michael Kleber-Diggs, Glynn Pogue, Katie Robinson, and Lauret Savoy—unearthing evidence of the ways Black people’s relationship to the natural world has persevered through colonialism, slavery, state-sponsored violence, and structurally racist policies like Jim Crow and redlining. A scrapbook, a family chest, a quilt—and an astounding work of historical engagement and literary accomplishment—A Darker Wilderness is a collection brimming with abundance and insight.

A Poetry Pedagogy for Teachers generates imaginative encounters with poetry and invites educators to practice a range of poetry exercises in order to inform instructional approaches to reading and writing. Guided by pedagogical principles prompted by their readings of Wallace Stevens' “Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird,” Maya Pindyck and Ruth Vinz provide critical discussion of prominent literacy practices in secondary classrooms and offer alternative approaches to encountering a text. They do this by way of experimental readings of Wallace Stevens' poem toward a set of thirteen pedagogical principles that anchor a pedagogy of poetic practices. The book also offers invitational exercises, the authors' own engagements with poetry practices, as well as student examples, visual modes of theorizing, and a gathering of relevant resources compiled by two classroom teachers. This is a book for secondary English teachers, teaching artists, English educators, college writing professors, readers and writers of poetry – both existing and aspirational – and any educator interested in poetry's capacities to pedagogically inform their subject matter and/or literacy practices.

This book is not the first time I have did research on album covers. However it is the first time. I have did a book on nude album covers. Sexy and Nude Album Covers". The photos and art work on covers, in this book are worth a thousand words! This is classic Americana and obviously world wide. Sex sells! I am pretty sure that most of the women depicted on these covers are not musicians. We are not here to discuss, this Just saying. I tried my best to find the very first album cover that showed a nude woman on the cover. That mission was a total failure. It seems that this practice has been going on since there have been album covers. Me, personally, I love the nudes and the sexually suggested covers. There are some that do not share my love and appreciation of this art form. Once again we are not here to deal with that. This book will merely take a journey through the past, too enjoy the art form. Sex sells, it is that plain and simple! I am sure that some of the music on the albums are pretty good as well. This type of album promotion was world wide. Jazz albums seemed to become one of the main users of this type of promotion, Others would soon follow. Eventually nude covers would crossover to the mainstream. I don't know if skin color had anything to do with the actual decision on the models. It appeared that race did not matter. As long as the model looked good and would make the potential buyers look at the cover. That is all that really seemed to matter. Some look at the nude covers as sexist. That is totally based on perception and interpertation. Just as people are constantly debating on what is art? The debate on nude and sexually suggested album covers will never end. I don't care, what others think or believe. It is! what it is!. We are not forcing anyone to look at this book or buy it. That choice is left up to you. The buyer! If you think my book and these images are offensive. Well, I say Bye Bye and now you can move on. For the rest! I hope that you enjoy this book as much as I do. I think that it is a great coffee table book. A conversation starter for sure! As well as some pretty women to look at. I have also added a Parental Advisory Label on the front cover! Remember this stuff could make you go blind. Like Grand Ma use to say! Have fun!
