I started writing letters to my daughter the day she died. This was my way of coping with a cruel depression. This is actually two books in one. The second part is the letters from jail. I speak and ask question of my daughter as if she was sitting across the table from me. The letters show how God stepped in and lent His tender mercies to someone asking what to do after the death of a child. There was no memory of the writings that are enclosed. God and my deceased daughter are the only explanation for the manifestation of this prose. Only a supreme being could claim responsibility for the content. This book is from a very unusual perspective and holds a very stern lesson for all. The day of my daughter's funeral, the most horrible day of my life, I began a 65 day, daily visit to the cemetery. It was during these long, sad visits I found myself putting poetry down on paper. I don't remember writing most of the poems proving God had opened my mind and allowed my child to be my guardian angel, my muse. I believe my daughter's spirit lead my heart to write what I felt and leading me to accept God's blessings and the ability to transform my depression into understandable words. While the essays are supplemented by individual appendices containing the translated text of the pertinent letters, the second part of the book presents annotated summaries in English of the entirety of Psellos' correspondence, compiled over many years as part of the Prosopography of the Byzantine World project and supported by substantial excursuses and notes. Scholars have long been aware of the looming presence of law in medieval English literature, from Christ as a litigious redemptor to Chaucer's deal-making Host in The Canterbury Tales. Most scholarly work on the subject has been confined either to tracking down representations of legal practices in texts or to examining formal questions relating to legal discourse. In a groundbreaking departure, The Letter of the Law suggests that law and literature should be understood as parallel forms of discourse -- at times complementary, at times antagonistic, but always mutually illuminating. Emily Steiner and Candace Barrington maintain that medievalists are uniquely placed to make valuable new contributions to the subject of law and literature, in part because of the inherently interdisciplinary nature of the study of medieval law, inseparable as it was from political theory and theology. Treating texts as varied as Chaucer's Knight's Tale, the fifteenth-century Robin Hood ballads, and William Thorpe's account of his own heresy trial, the nine never-before-published essays in this volume reveal the intersections of legal and documentary culture with vernacular literary production.
