Boak & Paris may not be a household name in most households, but this architectural firm was key to the development of apartment buildings that are among the finest in New York City. Annice Alts book analyzes this firm and its exceptional buildings in detail and places them within the context of speculative real estate development. The book provides an important contribution to the understanding of the vernacular buildings that create the streetscapes that New Yorkers love and that give the city its unique character. Andrew S. Dolkart Director, Historic Preservation Program, Columbia University School of Ar chitecture, Planning and Preservation; author of the award-winning The Row House Reborn: Architecture and Development in New York City, 19081929 and Morningside Heights: A History of its Architecture and Development" Alts thoroughly researched book provides new information and insights into the architectural work of Boak & Paris and Boak & Raad. It is a surprise to discover the wealth of buildings, particularly the apartment houses that they are responsible for. Many of the Boak & Paris projects from the 192030s employ interesting architectural terra-cotta elements. To revisit the apartments from the 1950s and 60s is a fascinating exercise. Fine period images are of great value in elucidating this quest. Susan Tunick President, Friends of Terra Cotta; author, Terra-Cotta Skyline: New Yorks Architectural Ornament New Yorks architecture buffs can rejoice: Annice Alt has completed her monograph on Boak & Paris. Robins, New York’s best-known Art Deco guide, includes an introductory essay describing the Art Deco phenomenon, followed by eleven walking tour itineraries in Manhattan—each accompanied by a map designed by legendary New York cartographer John Tauranac—and a survey of Deco sites across the four other boroughs. In New York Art Deco, Robins has distilled thirty years’ worth of experience into a guidebook for all to enjoy at their own pace. A native New Yorker and twenty-year veteran of the New York City Landmarks Commission, Anthony W. Robins is the author of books on Grand Central Terminal, the World Trade Center, and the art and architecture of the New York subway system. NATIONAL BESTSELLER A missing person, a grieving family, a curious clue: a half-finished manuscript set in Paris Once a week, I chase men who are not my husband. . . . When eccentric novelist Robert Eady abruptly vanishes, he leaves behind his wife, Leah, their daughters, and, hidden in an unexpected spot, plane tickets to Paris. Hoping to uncover clues--and her husband--Leah sets off for France with her girls. Upon their arrival, she discovers an unfinished manuscript, one Robert had been writing without her knowledge . . . and that he had set in Paris. The Eady girls follow the path of the manuscript to a small, floundering English-language bookstore whose weary proprietor is eager to sell. Leah finds herself accepting the offer on the spot. As the family settles into their new Parisian life, they trace the literary paths of some beloved Parisian classics, including Madeline and The Red Balloon, hoping more clues arise. But a series of startling discoveries forces Leah to consider that she may not be ready for what solving this mystery might do to her family--and the Paris she thought she knew. Charming, haunting, and triumphant, Paris by the Book follows one woman's journey as she writes her own story, exploring the power of family and the magic that hides within the pages of a book.

Paris Noir written by Jacques Yonnet and has been published by SCB Distributors this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-03-16 with Travel categories.

In Paris Noir Yonnet tells is about some of the darker quarters of Paris on the left bank of the Seine, centred on the place Mauberge and the rue Mouffetard, as seen from his own experience. It is mainly written during the 1940s, under the Occupation and in the immediate post-war period; there is a certain amount dealing with the resistance, but the main thrust of the book is a Paris that existed between the wars - and is well known from the film noir -but has since disappeared. It concentrates on the people, rather than places, a mixture of ordinary workers, tradesmen, artists, con-men and criminals. It invests the area with a sense of mystery including occasional supernatural events; it is extremely well written, often using the language of the inhabitants of the area. Raymond Queneau considered it the greatest book ever written about Paris. For Dedalus it is the perfect counterfoil for J.K.Huysmans Parisian Sketches which Dedalus published in 2004 which showed the darker side of Paris pre Haussmans big boulevards. 'Among the books you must read before you die is Paris Noir by Jacques Yonnet.' Raphael Sorin Concentrating on the seedy area around Rue Mouffetard, which becomes "La Mouffe" in a typically Parisian abbreviation, Yonnet reveals the dark side of the City of Light in the 1940s in this "secret history of a city".The street life of the Left Bank ticks on much as normal during the Occupation, though Léopoldie the tart stops turning tricks because "the green German uniform does not suit her complexion". Keep- on-Dancin', the killer with a fondness for history, rules the roost. Though describing himself as "sceptical, disillusioned, cynical", Yonnet casually dispatches a traitor in the Resistance. This is film noir in book form." Christopher Hirst in The Independent
