Bodies Of Nature written by Phil Macnaghten and has been published by SAGE this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-08-15 with Social Science categories.

This book examines the embodied nature of people′s experience in, and of, the modern world. It is therefore part of the deep-seated ′turn towards the body′. However, it is partly critical of this development in as much as it affirms that the sociology of the body has downplayed the extent to which the body is located in, and involved with, nature, the countryside, the outdoors, landscape and wilderness. The book argues that bodies in nature are subject to novel, complex and contradictory opportunities of freedom and escape, surveillance and monitoring. The book guides readers through the various ways in which these bodily opportunities and constraints are temporally and spatially organized and managed.

Eighteenth-century natural historians created a peculiar, and peculiarly durable, vision of nature--one that embodied the sexual and racial tensions of that era. When plants were found to reproduce sexually, eighteenth-century botanists ascribed to them passionate relations, polyandrous marriages, and suicidal incest, and accounts of steamy plant sex began to infiltrate the botanical literature of the day. Naturalists also turned their attention to the great apes just becoming known to eighteenth-century Europeans, clothing the females in silk vestments and training them to sip tea with the modest demeanor of English matrons, while imagining the males of the species fully capable of ravishing women.

Bodily Natures written by Stacy Alaimo and has been published by Indiana University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-10-25 with Philosophy categories.

How do we understand the agency and significance of material forces and their interface with human bodies? What does it mean to be human in these times, with bodies that are inextricably interconnected with our physical world? Bodily Natures considers these questions by grappling with powerful and pervasive material forces and their increasingly harmful effects on the human body. Drawing on feminist theory, environmental studies, and the sciences, Stacy Alaimo focuses on trans-corporeality, or movement across bodies and nature, which has profoundly altered our sense of self. By looking at a broad range of creative and philosophical writings, Alaimo illuminates how science, politics, and culture collide, while considering the closeness of the human body to the environment.

Excerpt from The Heavenly Bodies: Their Nature and Habitability Nearly five-and-thirty years ago an idea, entered in a note - book, occurred to me regarding 'plurality of worlds,' which at that time I imagined went far to unsettle the prevailing belief, and to decide a question subsequently much agitated. The little paper in which it was embodied, lying so long dormant, has been the germ of the present work. From a jotting on it I see I had in 1860 observed that another had, in a published book, struck out a similar idea, and it has since been repeated by other writers. It was then, if not previously, I presume, I became desirous to take up and examine the whole subject in all its bearings; but the incessant claims of an anxious profession altogether precluded the attempt, and it is only of recent date I have had it in my power to effect my purpose, and to bestow upon the subject the amount of study which I found to he requisite. The Perfecting Of Nature written by Josh Doty and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020 with American literature categories.

"The nineteenth century saw a marked change in how Americans viewed and understood the human corporal form. Cookbook writers drew from physiologists' studies of the nervous pathways between the stomach and the brain to promote their recipes as good for mental health. These new ways of understanding the body reflect how Americans were beginning to see the body's constituent parts as interconnected. From the Transcendentalists' idealized concept of self to the rise of Darwinian Theory after the Civil War, the era and its writers redefined the human body as a deeply reactive and malleable object. In this book, Josh Doty explores the 'plasticity' of the antebellum American body-the body's ability to react and change from interior and exterior forces-and argues that literature helped to shape the cultural reception of these ideas"--

'Remarkable' Robert Macfarlane 'Gorgeous' Amy Liptrot 'Urgent and nourishing' Jessica J. Lee Nina Mingya Powles first learned to swim in Borneo – where her mother was born and her grandfather studied freshwater fish. There, the local swimming pool became her first body of water. Through her life there have been others that have meant different things, but have still been, in their own way, home: from the wild coastline of New Zealand to a pond in northwest London. In lyrical, powerful prose, Small Bodies of Water weaves together memories, dreams and nature writing. Exploring everything from migration, food, family, earthquakes and the ancient lunisolar calendar, Nina reflects on a girlhood spent growing up between two cultures, and what it means to belong.
