Table of Contents Introduction Stereotyping Body Image Excessive Teenage Centered Emotional Reaction regarding Appearance Common Sense Tips for Parents Parental Support Binge Eating Conclusion Author Bio Publisher Introduction I wanted to write a book on why more and more children are becoming obsessed with this term body image. Once upon a time, this term was used only by psychologists, and people who were bothered about Freud and Jung and scientific researchers, thinking of the corporeal aspects of a physical body, and what the mind thought about it consciously and subconsciously. But since the time when it has come into popular usage, thanks to the Internet, even parents, who really do not know anything about child psychology have begun using this term with great impunity. According to them, body is a body, and the image is what your body looks like in the mirror! And that is what the Internet would have you believe. According to sites out there, the body image is a reflection of what you see of yourself in the mirror. Actually, it is much more deeper than that, it is the mental visualization of the perception of your own body as you think of it, mentally in terms of attractiveness and its aesthetics. Paul Schilder, an Austrian psychologist thought up this term, way back in the 30s in one of his research papers, and since then people have begun obsessing on how they look, and how others “see” them and the first impression thereof. That is natural, instinctive, and human and has been a part of natural selection for centuries, but as more and more teenagers are getting more obsessed with obtaining the perfect figure dictated according to the popular press, public media, and even social sites, this is definitely not good for their future emotional, spiritual, and even mental health. Physically they are going to ruin their good health by starving themselves because they want to be a zero size person. This drastic state of affairs was the reason why so many Hollywood stars, starved to death or drank themselves to death, because their studio chiefs had it written in the contract that they could not gain a pound of weight, while they were under contract! This extremism was okay in the 30s and 40s, when it was glamour time in Hollywood, especially during the Great Depression, and human beings were held up as role models, goddesses, and every young girl was told to look like that particular star.

[Abstract] The purpose of this heuristic research study was to discover the essence of the experience and explore the question: What is the experience of having an obsession with one's body image? Review of the literature has shown that much has been written about body image, but with particular emphasis upon the experience of persons with eating disorders or upon women specifically. No studies were found that used a heuristic model. The heuristic model is a human science model which emphasizes the person in his or her experience. This model was used to provide the theoretical framework for my study. Eight interviews were conducted among six women and two men who indicated that they believed this experience was a significant event in their lives. From the tape-recorded interviews, data was collected which indicated thirteen prominent themes: heightened awareness of self; dissatisfaction with appearance; distorted body image perceptions; preoccupation with food and/or exercise; comparison of self to others; sensitivity to others; self-esteem; isolation; internal process; helplessness/loss of control; life change/body change; aging and time; and restriction of freedom. This experience was described as a self-consciousness of the body in relation to others, where frequently comparisons would be a part of the individual's internal process. This often resulted in feelings of inadequacy and dissatisfaction with the body in particular, and self in general. Often accompanying this experience was a preoccupation with food, weight, or exercise. Several researchers indicated that they felt isolated in their experience, and recognized that their freedom to interact spontaneously was inhibited. The findings which resulted from this research could be of interest to persons in the helping professions, as well as to parents of teenagers and others who have been obsessed with their body image.

Western culture has increasingly valued physical appearance and in particular slenderness in the last 20 years. Unrealistic targets of thinness and excessive weight loss have led to eating disorders, the idea of obligatory exercise and other mental health problems. The concept of dissatisfaction with one's body image is driven home by images of ultra-thin models appearing in newspapers, magazines and television. This book brings together leading international research in this alarming and growing field.

Growing numbers of young men are taking the quest for perfect muscles, skin and hair too far, crossing the line from normal interest to pathological obsession. For the first time, three of the world's leading authorities on men help us to understand and combat the frightening set of compulsive behaviours that make up the Adonis Complex. Combining colourful case studies with scientific research, they reveal a threat that is as serious as the beauty myth for women or anorexia nervosa for girls. The symptoms of this dangerous body obsession, excessive workouts, steroid abuse, eating disorders and body and muscle dysmorphic disorder (distorted body perception), lead to problems with sex and intimacy, relationships and work. In teenagers, the Adonis Complex can interfere with healthy emotional and physical development. Until now, frank discussion of this problem has been virtually taboo. At last we can hear what men really think and feel about their bodies, so that those who suffer in silence will no longer need to suffer alone.

Over the past twenty-five years, our quest for thinness has morphed into a relentless obsession with weight and body image. In our culture, "fat" has become a four-letter word. Or, as Lance Armstrong said to the wife of a former teammate, "I called you crazy. I called you a bitch. But I never called you fat." How did we get to this place where the worst insult you can hurl at someone is "fat"? Where women and girls (and increasingly men and boys) will diet, purge, overeat, undereat, and berate themselves and others, all in the name of being thin? As a science journalist, Harriet Brown has explored this collective longing and fixation from an objective perspective; as a mother, wife, and woman with "weight issues," she has struggled to understand it on a personal level. Now, in Body of Truth, Brown systematically unpacks what's been offered as "truth" about weight and health. Starting with the four biggest lies, Brown shows how research has been manipulated; how the medical profession is complicit in keeping us in the dark; how big pharma and big, empty promises equal big, big dollars; how much of what we know (or think we know) about health and weight is wrong. And how all of those affect all of us every day, whether we know it or not. The quest for health and wellness has never been more urgent, yet most of us continue to buy into fad diets and unattainable body ideals, unaware of the damage we're doing to ourselves. Through interviews, research, and her own experience, Brown not only gives us the real story on weight, health, and beauty, but also offers concrete suggestions for how each of us can sort through the lies and misconceptions and make peace with and for ourselves.
