El poeta le habla al mundo y modela el amor al prójimo.El presente trabajo, Vanguardia literaria e ideología política en Boletines de mar y tierra del poeta ecuatoriano Jorge Carrera Andrade, es un aporte para fomentar y profundizar el análisis encaminado a un debate más coherente en lo que se refiere al yo poeta y al yo social. Los puntos de inflexión que llevan necesariamente a mirar a la literatura como un elemento lúdico para entender los entornos sociales, políticos, culturales e históricos, hacen del ejercicio de lectura una práctica crítica que nos ubica dentro de un contexto, obligadamente ideológico. Fernando Tinajero, citado en el trabajo de Agustín Cueva, Literatura y sociedad en el Ecuador 1920-1969, afirma que "para el Ecuador, el siglo XX solo inició en 1922" (Cueva, 1988, p. 630). Es precisamente ese referente el que nos permite plantear objetivamente que la literatura ecuatoriana tiene su punto de inflexión a partir de la segunda década del siglo XX. Esta bifurcación, choque y ruptura a la vez, lleva el sello del 15 de noviembre de 1922, fecha a partir de la cual los escritores ecuatorianos se replantean, en un ejercicio autocrítico, su rol activo dentro de la sociedad ecuatoriana y su quehacer artístico-político en un entorno que clama por respuestas inmediatas al contexto histórico de su condición de marginados o de explotadores según el caso. Sin duda, se debe afirmar que los escritores-intelectuales con mayor identidad ideológica de izquierda, muchos de ellos dentro del canon vanguardista, fueron los que asumieron la responsabilidad de ejercer una literatura contestataria al sistema oligárquico que se vivía por aquel entonces. Vanguardia literaria e ideología política en Boletines de mar y tierra es un libro que evidencia el compromiso ideológico de Jorge Carrera Andrade y su coherencia tanto en su militancia en el Partido Socialista Ecuatoriano como en su ejercicio como poeta. El trabajo investigativo que aquí se presenta, a través de los capítulos de análisis y discusión, es una muestra fehaciente de que el poeta no divorcia su identidad ideológica de la creación literaria y que no hay tal separación, a la hora de escribir como algunos críticos pretenden al momento de "clasificar" a las obras literarias dentro de los cajones canónicos de manera arbitraria, abusiva y enajenante.

While Latin American poets such as Pablo Neruda, Jorge Luis Borges, and Octacio Paz have been receiving most of the attention of critics, the Ecuadorian poet Jorge Carrera Andrade had quietly continued writing his "transparent" poetry. Nevertheless, Carrera Andrade's poems are undoubtedly some of the best ever written in the Spanish language, and he has often been mentioned as a likely candidate for the Nobel Prize. In his poetic exploration of what he calls "the secret country of human existence," Carrera Andrade marvels at the beauty of the world. And this wonder is conveyed by means of dazzling, descriptive metaphors. Perhaps it could be said that the Ecuadorian poet always interprets the world visually, but his visual images constitute merely a metaphorical technique, around which he constructs his poems. In his verbal structures he expresses the transitory nature of life as well as the loneliness of man in the universe. He describes life in his native Ecuador, contemplates with compassion the plight of the Indians of his country, and denounces social injustices. More recently Carrera Andrade, concerned about the destiny of mankind, manifests his indomitable faith in humanity in the book Hombre planetario (1959), imagining a social utopia. Carrera Andrade has stated that his poetry is the result of "the intimate union of the senses and the intellect." And yet his poems remain "transparent." He rejects obscurity and complexity and chooses simplicity and clarity. He considers that "one of the essential goals of poetry is communion with other men" and that if his poetry cannot communicate "its emotive and sensorial content, it fails to accomplish its mission, which is the interpretation of the world." As to the universal meaning of his poetic work, Carrera Andrade would recall Goethe's phrase: "All my works are fragments of a great confession." He would characterize his own work as a confession of love both for humanity and for the wonders of this world. Carrera Andrade must be counted among the four or five best contemporary poets of Latin America. Whether he is awarded a Nobel Prize still remains to be seen, but there can be no doubt that in his poems one can detect the same literary excellence as in the work of Neruda, Paz, or Borges. Hopefully the work of this great Ecuadorian poet will soon be universally appreciated. In some of his works he can be compared to T. S. Eliot, Hölderlin, or Saint-Jean Perse. The publication of H. R. Hayes' translations will, for the first time, make available to English-speaking readers all of the significant verse of Carrera Andrade, beginning with some of his first pieces from La guirnalda del silencio (1926) and ending with translations from Posía última (1957 -1966).

In these five essays the Ecuadorian poet Jorge Carrera Andrade traces the evolution of Spanish-American poetry from the sixteenth century to the present. The author shows how Spanish-American literature grew out of the special conditions produced when the New World environment totally transformed Old World culture and society. Initially, the brilliance of the land and its extraordinary peoples inspired European interest in exotic travel and utopianism; later, Old World literary currents came to have distinctive expression in Spanish-American writing. "Poetry and Society in Spanish-America" follows the historic commitment of the New World poets to social issues, particularly such unique ones as the endeavor to bring the Indians into national life, while "Trends in Spanish-American Poetry" dwells on the more purely aesthetic concerns that have stimulated the poets of the twentieth century.
