Edito in occasione della celebrazione del ventennale della nostra prima uscita editoriale (1997), questo numero doppio del “BSSF-Bollettino della Società di Studi Fiorentini” si pone come una raccolta miscellanea di ricerche diverse, che, pur nella varietà degli argomenti trattati, ha inteso mostrare la vitalità e l’importanza dello “Studium” della Storia, inteso non solo come studio/ricerca, ma anche come ‘officina’, scaturigine e ordinamento di eventi, che si pongono in relazione con le dinamiche di una Società complessa come quella attuale [...] in cui, paradossalmente, c’è sempre più ‘bisogno’ di Storia. “Studium” resta per noi un valore e con esso, attraverso questo volume frutto di rigorose ricerche dal Medioevo all’Età contemporanea, abbiamo inteso celebrare i nostri (primi) vent’anni di attività di studio.

«“Memorabilia” sono eventi o “cose” che segnano l’immaginario di una Società in una visione limitata ad una Comunità, mentre gli “Eventi storici” sono la base della “Storia” che resta, sempre e comunque, una visione allargata del Mondo. Sulla “Memoria” si fonda l’“Identità” comunitaria, per cui la “Memoria” è a fondamento della “Critica” e della sua costruzione unilaterale; dalla “Storia” scaturisce invece una visione policentrica, diacronica e mai univoca, che necessita di ordinamenti storiografici. Dalla “Memoria” e dalla “Storia” prende vita il valore del “Patrimonio”, prodotto stratificato e condensato che sovrapassa i confini nazionali. Costruito alla metà del Quattrocento da Michelozzo per volere dei Medici, il palazzo divenne il prototipo dell'Architettura civile rinascimentale. La mole robusta e austera del palazzo, in origine ridotta a una sorta di cubo, è stata per almeno un secolo l'Immagine più diretta ed efficace del primato politico e culturale dei Medici a Firenze. Dopo un periodo di incuria, nel 1659 i Medici lo vendettero ai Riccardi che lo hanno ampliato verso nord e in parte ristrutturato gli interni. Gli interventi di gusto barocco, particolarmente intensi negli ultimi due decenni del secolo, furono improntati dal fasto spettacolare e dall'Erudizione ricercata. Tramontato tanto splendore, nel 1814 i Riccardi cedettero il palazzo al demanio.
