Excerpt from Bombay, 1885 to 1890: A Study in Indian Administration Some time ago you asked me to write a book which would Show the practical working Of British adminis tration in an Indian Presidency. You pointed Out that while the yearly 'statement Of the Moral and Material Progress and Condition Of India' supplies Parliament with the materials for judging Of the results Of our rule in India, there is no work readily available to the public which exhibits, the local methods by which those results are attained. The constitution Of the Supreme Government Of India has, indeed, been ably treated Of; but similar facilities do not exist for gaining a clear view Of the modern mechanism Of the Provincial Governments, and of their actual impact on the people. Excerpt from Gazetteer of the Bombay Presidency, 1885, Vol. 18: Part II., Poona In the Dash or eastern plain, where the south-west rain is light and uncertain, the early or khan] harvest is less important than in the west. The chief early cro s are spiked millet or be ri mixed with the hardy tar and early In iau millet or °vairi. Hese are sown in late May or in June on the first so cient rainfall. In good ears they ripen in late September and October; in bad years not ti 1 November. When the early crops are reaped in September and where the land permits, a second or duscia crop is raised. As, after October, rain rarely falls in the hilly west, except a little wheat grown on the eastern fringe, the late or rabi dry-crop harvest is of comparatively little im ortance. In the east of the district which is within the range of t e north-east rains, the late or rabi harvest is more important than the early harvest. There the late crops are sown in October and November and ripen in February and March. They are chiefl sheila and other cold-weather Indian millets and gram, lentils, andy other pulses. Lunatic Asylums In Colonial Bombay written by Sarah Ann Pinto and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-08-28 with History categories.

This book traces the historical roots of the problems in India’s mental health care system. It accounts for indigenous experiences of the lunatic asylum in the Bombay Presidency (1793-1921). The book argues that the colonial lunatic asylum failed to assimilate into Indian society and therefore remained a failed colonial-medical enterprise. It begins by assessing the implications of lunatic asylums on indigenous knowledge and healing traditions. It then examines the lunatic asylum as a ‘middle-ground’, and the European superintendents’ ‘common-sense’ treatment of Indian insanity. Furthermore, it analyses the soundscapes of Bombay’s asylums, and the extent to which public perceptions influenced their use. Lunatic asylums left a legacy of historical trauma for the indigenous community because of their coercive and custodial character. This book aims to disrupt that legacy of trauma and to enable new narratives in mental health treatment in India.
