An unexpected window into a world that is beautiful, breath-taking, culturally diverse and downright exotic. Jean Muir is an American who fell in love with Scotland. Scotland: Celebrations & Soul Food is her love letter to the culture, festivals and culinary riches of that great country. Combing food and history, Jean focuses on the many unique events and celebrations within Scotland, describing the folklore, traditions and food centred around these cultural highlights. From the world famous New Year’s Eve celebrations to the revelry of Up Helly Aa in Shetland, from the grandeur of the Border Ridings to ancient customs such as the Burry Man of South Queensferry, this book provides a graphical, detailed insider’s view of these spectacular events. Beginning at midnight on New Year’s Eve, it’s an around-the-country, around-the-calendar adventure to highlight how they celebrate north of the border – Scotland-style! Colourful and inspiring photos and historical facts lay bare the origins and meanings of the celebrations. Since there is no point in having a festival without a feast, recipes are included that use regional and seasonal ingredients to give you a real feeling of participation, along with full-colour pictures. The book provides an original and innovative approach to Scottish products and ingredients, creating dishes that showcase the world-class bounty of Scotland. Mainline Christianity written by Jason S Lantzer and has been published by NYU Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-04-30 with Religion categories.

Since the Revolutionary War, Mainline Christianity has been comprised of the Seven Sisters of American Protestantism—the Congregational Church, the Episcopal Church, the Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Presbyterian Church, the United Methodist Church, the American Baptist Convention, and the Disciples of Christ. These denominations have been the dominant cultural representatives since the nineteenth century of how and where the majority of American Christians worship. Today, however, the Seven Sisters no longer represent most American Christians. The Mainline has been shrinking while evangelical and fundamentalist churches, as well as non denominational congregations and mega churches, have been attracting more and more members. In this comprehensive and accessible book, Jason S. Lantzer chronicles the rise and fall of the Seven Sisters, documenting the ways in which they stopped shaping American culture and began to be shaped by it. After reviewing and critiquing the standard decline narrative of the Mainline he argues for a reconceptualization of the Mainline for the twenty-first century, a new grouping of Seven Sisters that seeks to recognize the vibrancy of American Christianity.

When John Osborne died at Christmas 1994, his obituaries cited his autobiographical writings as perfect examples of undiluted talent and acerbic wit. Now, Osborne's superb autobiographies, A Better Class of Person: 1929-1956 and Almost a Gentleman: 1955-1966 (winner of the J. R. Ackerley Prize), are available for the first time in one volume, Looking Back. 'A brilliant, funny, melancholy and acrimonious book of memoirs . . . Almost every page confirms that his powers as an elegist, definer of the Zeitgeist and master of unforgiving disgust remain undimmed.' Observer This volume also contains 'Bad John', a review by Alan Bennett of A Better Class of Person, and David Hare's eulogy for John Osborne at the memorial service for Osborne in 1995.

The Great Chicago Fire And The Myth Of Mrs O Leary S Cow written by Richard F. Bales and has been published by McFarland this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-09-01 with History categories.

The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 swallowed up more than three square miles in two days, leaving thousands homeless and 300 dead. Throughout history, the fire has been attributed to Mrs. O'Leary, an immigrant Irish milkmaid, and her cow. On one level, the tale of Mrs. O'Leary's cow is merely the quintessential urban legend. But the story also represents a means by which the upper classes of Chicago could blame the fire's chaos on a member of the working poor. Although that fire destroyed the official county documents, some land tract records were saved. Using this and other primary source information, Richard F. Bales created a scale drawing that reconstructed the O'Leary neighborhood. Next he turned to the transcripts--more than 1,100 handwritten pages--from an investigation conducted by the Board of Police and Fire Commissioners, which interviewed 50 people over the course of 12 days. The board's final report, published in the Chicago newspapers on December 12, 1871, indicates that commissioners were unable to determine the cause of the fire. And yet, by analyzing the 50 witnesses' testimonies, the author concludes that the commissioners could have determined the cause of the fire had they desired to do so. Being more concerned with saving their own reputation from post-fire reports of incompetence, drunkenness and bribery, the commissioners failed to press forward for an answer. The author has uncovered solid evidence as to what really caused the Great Chicago Fire.
