« Il faut d'abord vivre, et ensuite philosopher » : telle était la devise des Anciens (en latin : « Primum vivere, deinde philosophari »), véritable profession de foi épicurienne. Et le sens commun s'accommode facilement de ce genre de formules. Il tend à penser que l'essentiel, c'est la vie (ce en quoi il n'a pas tort), et que la philosophie est secondaire. Ce que nous voudrions montrer dans cet ouvrage, c'est qu'il ne faut ni séparer la philosophie de la vie, ni affirmer une quelconque primauté de la seconde sur la première : il est essentiel de philosopher pour bien vivre, et la réflexion philosophique doit accompagner notre existence si nous voulons vraiment vivre pleinement. C'est pourquoi nous voulons proposer au lecteur, sinon de consacrer sa vie à la philosophie, du moins de passer une année « philosophique ».Olivier Abiteboul est professeur de philosophie à Nice, docteur en philosophie de l'Université de Provence (Aix-Marseille I), chercheur associé au Centre de recherches " Littérature et poétique comparées " de l'Université de Paris Ouest-Nanterre-La Défense, membre du comité de rédaction de la revue Théâtres du Monde (PU d'Avignon). Il est l'auteur d'une quinzaine d'ouvrages, dont Le paradoxe apprivoisé (Flammarion, 1998) et La rhétorique des philosophes (L'Harmattan, 2002).
