A comprehensive, well-documented genealogy of the descendants of Gerrit, Lambert, and Elias Dorland, early settlers of New Netherland/New York. In addition to the male-lines, descendants of daughters are traced, in some cases for many generations. The Life and Miracles of St. William of Norwich is the medieval hagiography written in 1173. It tells the life story of a real personality, known as William of Norwich, that was supposedly tortured and killed by the Jewish community in the Medieval city of Norwich. The author of the scripture heard and recorded the story from a former Jew, Theobald of Cambridge. The story tells the life of William in the Jewish community that treated him well, at first. But later, they tortured him, mocking the Bible scenes of the crucifixion. This story by Monmouth had a significant effect. It started the intense discrimination against the Jewish community and eventually led to expelling Jews from England by King Edward I order.

The great echoing phrases of the King James Bible that have boomed through the English-speaking mind for 400 years - an eye for an eye . . . eat, drink and be merry . . . . death, where is thy sting? . . . man shall not live by bread alone - are largely the work of a man whose genius for words matches Shakespeare. But William Tyndale, the young Gloucestershire tutor who wrote them, paid for them with his life. He was persecuted, exiled and eventually burned at the stake. Book of Fire is the thrilling, moving story of the man who first translated the word of God into the English vernacular. Tyndale did so in defiance of church and state, hunted by the implacable enmity and the agents of the sainted Thomas More. He was finally betrayed, but by then his courage and poetic instinct had provided the backbone of the single most significant work in the English language. The Tudor heretic had changed the literary, religious and political landscape for ever.

Old Times In Old Monmouth written by Edwin Salter and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-07-01 with History categories.

This fascinating compendium is as much a history of colonial America as a history of Monmouth. The main part of this book consists of historical articles originally contributed by Edwin Salter to the Monmouth Democrat during the years 1873 and 1874, and subsequently added to by Judge George Beekman. The centennial of the Battle of Monmouth followed, and the collection was enlarged by adding articles relating to that event. In addition to the historical information and the detailed accounts of the famous battle, it also contains a mass of genealogical information, including founding families, extracts from wills, inventories, court records and miscellaneous church and military records, and material relating to the Scotch immigration to the area in the late 17th century. The articles are arranged chronologically, beginning with a transcription of the Monmouth Patent of 1665. Highlights include the story of the arrival of Sir Henry Hudson in 1609 aboard his famous ship, the Half Moon. An extract from the logbook describes the first notices of the Monmouth area by Europeans, remarks about the country, its inhabitants, the first landing and other interesting matter. Anecdotes about local Indians, captivities and treaties add to the lively tone of these articles. The Battle of Monmouth, June 28, 1778, was a turning point in the Revolution because it "revived the drooping hopes of the people, and lent new energy to Washington and the brave and patriotic officers and soldiers of his army." One of the most famous stories associated with the battle is that of Molly Pitcher, the courageous young wife of a cannonier. "Captain Molly," upon seeing her husband shot dead at his post, took his place at the cannon, seized the rammer, and vowed to avenge his death. An entire section is devoted solely to the battle, derived from documents, military reports and personal accounts from both the British and American sides making this text the most complete history of Monmouth to be found!

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1882 edition. Excerpt: ... First Families of Old Monmouth. SALTER FAMILY. BY J. E. STILLWELL, M. D., NEW YORK CITY. The Salter family may justly lay claim to considerable antiquity. In the reign of Henry VI., temp. 1423, there lived one William Salter, who was possessed of good estate and whose ancestors had resided at and were the Lords, for over two hundred years, of a manor called Bokenhamis, in England. Walter Salter lived in the time of Richard III., temp. 1482. At the upper end of the south aisle, in the church of Tottengen, in the county of Norfolk, there is erected to himself and lady, a tablet with the following inscription: "Orate pro animabus Walter Salter et Alice uxoris ejus Et pro quibns tenentus." "Pray for the souls of Walter Salter And Alice his wife, and for the Souls of all that belong to them." 1524, Henry Salter was one of the sheriffs of Norwich. 1655, John Salter was mayor of Norwich. 1663, the charter of the said city of Norwich was renewed by Charles II., and John baiter was one of the twenty-four aldermen who were appointed. He died the 20th of November, 1669, aged 77 years, and was buried in the church of St. Andrews. 1670, Bridget, the wife ot Matthew Salter, died December 31, aged 42 years. She was interred in the church of S. Ethelred, and from her tomb is copied the following quaint epitaph: "Tho' dead, yet dear, Tho' dead, yet dear to me, Dead is her body, Dear her memorie." It is doubtless from some of the fore-going persons that the Salters in this country are descended. If Mrs. Bridget, last above mentioned, was, as is positively asserted, the mother of twenty-two children, it was no wonder that some of them wanted to leave. In England at the present day, the name, though not common, is still considerably met with in certain...
