Excerpt from Book Stack and Shelving for Libraries Requisites Of A Library Book Stack. Every active library containing any considerable number of volumes requires an arrangement of shelving embodying all of the following features, namely: 1. Accommodation for books of every variety, size and kind of binding. 2. Shelves easily and quickly adjustable and interchangeable by any library attendant and readily and compactly stowed away close at hand when temporarily displaced. 3. Permitting every desirable classification, arrangement and rearrangement of the books at will. 4. Affording free and instant access to any volume at any time. 5. Having not only certain main corridors, stairs and lifts for direct access to the books and for free communication both laterally and vertically throughout the stack in its several tiers, but readily yielding additional passages anywhere. 6. Proper supports for books on partially filled shelves. 7. Maximum capacity and capability of indefinite extension. 8. All surfaces permanently smooth and rounded to prevent injury to books or papers and protected from corrosion. 9. Fireproof throughout. 10. Thoroughly and safely illuminated by day and by night. 11. Naturally clean and readily kept free from accumulated dust. 12. Furnishing no lodgment or comfort to book pests. 13. Immunity from injury from leaky roof or ceiling. 14. Even temperature and ventilation not only throughout the stack in general but through the individual shelves and their supports, so that practically the only obstruction to free circulation of air and light is offered by the books themselves. 15. Free, easy and direct communication at will in any direction throughout the stack for the convenience of attendants. 16. Convenience for all sorts of appropriate work everywhere in the stack, including direct access to books by readers when desirable as in the open shelf room, and the placing at convenient points of desks, cabinets, etc. 17. The fewest separate parts or pieces and the simplest construction consistent with strength and rigidity. 18. Location in close communication with reading, cataloguing and delivery rooms. Excerpt from Manual of Library Classification and Shelf Arrangement This work has been prepared to meet the requirements of those who are engaged or interested in the study of practical library methods. No English book on this subject has been issued since Edwards dealt with classifications generally in his Memoirs of Libraries, published in 1859; and the literature of the subject consists of little more than papers on single schemes. Classification has never been a strong point in British libraries, and this has arisen partly from apathy on the part of librarians, but also from the difficulty of obtaining information about American and foreign schemes which have been successfully applied to libraries. Leaving out of view Petzholdt's list of classifications contained in his Bibliotheca Bibliographica (1866), I have been unable to find that any single work devoted entirely to a systematic examination of schemes has ever been issued in any country. This little book has been prepared, accordingly, to fill a well-defined space in library literature; and however inadequate or slight the attempt may be, it is earnestly hoped that it will in some measure help to stimulate interest in the subject of classification. Trust Me I M Lying written by Ryan Holiday and has been published by Profile Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-02-01 with Self-Help categories.

Recently, fake news has become real news, making headlines as its consequences become crushingly obvious in political upsets and global turmoil. But it's not new - you've seen it all before. A malicious online rumour costs a company millions. Politically motivated 'fake news' stories are planted and disseminated to influence elections. Some product or celebrity zooms from total obscurity to viral sensation. Anonymous sources and speculation become national conversation. What you don't know is that someone is responsible for all this. Usually, someone like Ryan Holiday: a media manipulator. Holiday wrote this book to explain how media manipulators work, how to spot their fingerprints, how to fight them, and how (if you must) to emulate their tactics. Why is he giving away these secrets? Because he's tired of a world where trolls hijack debates, marketers help write the news, reckless journalists spread lies, and no one is accountable for any of it. He's pulling back the curtain because it's time everyone understands how things really work.

Excerpt from A Plan of Organization for Small Libraries: Methods of Work, Lists of Supplies and Aids It is recommended that all orders for books be made out on book order cards which will be kept and form the shelf list. In libraries too small to be classified the books will be recorded by accession number and shelved alphabetically by author. All methods of work from the selection of the book until it is ready for circulation and eventually with drawn are described in detail and lists of supplies needed are given with prices. There are suggestions and lists of aids for equipment, for care of books, for library economics, for publicity and allied activities. A brief history of the library movement in America leads to the relations between the librarian and the board, the schools, the teachers and the community; and to suggestions given for making the library an attractive center in the town life. The books that we choose to keep -- let alone read -- can say a lot about who we are and how we see ourselves. In My Ideal Bookshelf, dozens of leading cultural figures share the books that matter to them most; books that define their dreams and ambitions and in many cases helped them find their way in the world. Contributors include Malcolm Gladwell, Thomas Keller, Michael Chabon, Alice Waters, James Patterson, Maira Kalman, Judd Apatow, Chuck Klosterman, Miranda July, Alex Ross, Nancy Pearl, David Chang, Patti Smith, Jennifer Egan, and Dave Eggers, among many others. With colorful and endearingly hand-rendered images of book spines by Jane Mount, and first-person commentary from all the contributors, this is a perfect gift for avid readers, writers, and all who have known the influence of a great book.
