In the small town of Maplewood Grove, Lila runs Barton and Sinclair’s, a bookstore she started with her late husband, Ben. Still grieving two years after his death, she's comforted by the familiar surroundings of her store. When James, a retired history teacher, moves to Maplewood Grove looking for a quiet place to settle, he's drawn to the bookstore and its owner. As they both prepare for the annual Green Festival, a celebration that meant a lot to Ben, James finds himself increasingly involved in the community—and with Lila. As the festival nears, Lila must decide if she's ready to let someone new into her life, while James looks for a new purpose. "Bookends of the Heart" explores love, loss, and the possibility of second chances in a close-knit community.

British sensation Jane Green delivers a sparkling tale of old friends reunited and old jealousies rekindled. Catherine Warner and Simon Nelson are best friends: total opposites, always together, and both unlucky in love. Cath is scatterbrained, messy, and—since she had her heart broken a few years back—emotionally closed off. Si is impossibly tidy, bitchy, and desperate for a man of his own. They live in London’s West Hampstead along with their lifelong friends, Josh and Lucy, who are happily married with a devil-spawn child and a terrifying Swedish nanny, Ingrid. All’s well (sort of) until the sudden arrival of a college friend—the stunningly beautiful Portia, who is known for breaking hearts. Though they’ve grown up and grown apart from Portia, the four friends welcome her back into the fold. But does Portia have a hidden agenda or is she merely looking to reconnect with old friends? Her reappearance soon unleashes a rollicking series of events that tests the foursome’s friendships to the limit and leaves them wondering if a happy ending is in store. Fortunately, Cath has plenty to take her mind off Portia’s schemes—like her gutsy decision to leave her job in advertising to fulfill her dream of opening a bookstore. And then there’s James, the sexy real-estate agent who keeps dropping by even after the bookstore deal is done. With his irresistible smile and boyish charm could he be the one to melt Cath’s heart? Told with Jane Green’s captivating wit and flare, Bookends is above all a story about friendship—its twists, turns and complications—and how it weathers the challenges of love, ambition, marriage, and, most of all, growing up. Warmhearted, sophisticated, and full of delicious surprises, Bookends is Green’s most dazzling novel yet.

Opposites attract? Maybe not. Emilie Getz and Jonas Fielding are as different as two people—of the same age, with the same faith, living in the same charming Pennsylvania town—could be. She loves history; he loves new ideas. She sticks to the rules; he likes to break them. She’s into saving relics; he’s into saving souls. The one trait they share is a penchant for controlling every aspect of their lives, including their stubborn hearts. When Emilie’s search for an archaeological treasure leads her to the one piece of land she can’t have (thanks to Jonas), they choose opposing sides in an engaging battle of wits. Emilie, a no-nonsense sort of woman, is determined to have her way. But Jonas is on a mission as well: He wants to hear Emilie laugh. Often. Fond memories of her childhood years in the Moravian church—one of the oldest of the Protestant denominations—and her love for Lititz history and traditions serve as a solid underpinning for this lively contemporary tale. "The Heart of the Rose," written by Mabel McKee and published by Fleming H. Revell in 1913, is a short story about moral purity. The story begins when Beth, a young girl of twelve, is handed her baby brother and told that she will need to be "both a mother and sister to him." The story doesn't give details, but apparently Beth and her brother Floyd were orphans. The story fast-forwards 17 years to when Floyd is about to leave for college. A young friend stop by, and Beth overhears her brother speaking of girls in a course and unseemly manner. Two girls then join the party, and Beth observes the young couples behaving in a loose and familiar manner. The rest of the story tells how Beth managed to deter things from progressing further, and the touching conversation she has with her brother on how he ought to behave towards a girl. Beth tells him the story of an unblemished rose, and in the course of the conversation, finally reaches her brother's heart. The book ends with Floyd quoting from Sir Galahad, "my strength is as the strength of ten because my heart is pure." The principles in this book, which may be considered strait-laced by many, are nonetheless much-needed by many in our world today. Though short, this charming story of the rose provides another opportunity to reinforce the beauty of moral purity to young men and young ladies alike.
