Excerpt from Accounts and Accounting Practice The author of this book has accepted the distinction made by recent writers between bookkeeping and accounting and has adopted the latter title, because the discussions and exercises that follow have to do chiefly with the construction, organization, and interpretation of accounts. One writer says that "bookkeeping is carpentry; accounting, architecture." If this distinction holds, bookkeeping becomes merely an application of arithmetic and penmanship; its aim as a subject of study, the acquisition of manual expertness in marshaling statistics. The study of any subject by the application of prescribed formula must dull the observation and deaden initiative, thus making distinct and logical sequences decline into a routine obedience to rule-of-thumb dogmas. While the student of bookkeeping, therefore, as bookkeeping has been defined, may carry away with him a quantity of not altogether useless preconceptions, the critical faculty, which alone can aid him in analyzing the entirely practical and unceremonious phenomena of business, is not brought into prominence. The clerical aspects of all written work are, of course, important; but a larger aim of this subject should be to teach the principles of business organization and procedure as they are prescribed in the experiences of business men. Business organization results from the observation and interpretation of business facts and events. When a business man appraises a fact of his business, he at the same time appraises the services of the one responsible for that fact. Accounts record values, but values merely reflect the judgments of men. Each account, therefore, has its prototype in some activity of the business. The accounting organization thus symbolizes the business organization; each involves all the principles of the other. It is not contended that a study of the principles of business organization will make a full-fledged business man, and more than a study of legal "cases" will make a full-fledged lawyer. But the aspirant for success in the commercial world who is fortified with a knowledge of principles and precedents is much better able to interpret his environment than one who enters the field with no such equipment. The traditional Accounting ‘Practice’ model is outdated. Your clients do not want an accountant who is just an order taker. What they do want is an accounting firm that looks to the future and provides them with timely advice on what they should be doing now to improve their businesses and ultimately to help them achieve their financial and lifestyle goals. If you want to be that firm, you need to read ‘Accounting Practices Don’t Add Up’ to learn how. In this book, Rob Nixon reveals how he helps accounting firms succeed.

Excerpt from Accounting Practice The idea prevalent some years ago, that an accountant was simply a "bookkeeper out of a job," has long since been dispelled. To-day the business has attained a high standard as a profession. To check a set of books, and simply verify the clerical accuracy of the work, is not auditing in the true sense of the word. There are methods requiring little work which make such checking unnecessary. The accountant, while he understands bookkeeping, is more than a bookkeeper. He must be capable of dealing with the difficult problems of business and he must know how to interpret the intricacies of affairs so that a layman can comprehend and be guided by his observations. The accountant must know theory in order properly to understand his business; but a man able and proficient in theory is not necessarily a competent accountant. He must acquire practice by actual experience, in order to develop ability as an accountant; for it is the art of applying theory in practice which makes the theory valuable. In the natural order of things, we learn from the experience of others, and the advantage each generation has over the preceding one lies in the knowledge gained by the experience of the preceding generation. The business of accounting has developed so rapidly that the reference books, essential to the business as a profession, have not kept pace; consequently the books available are not on a par with the reference books of other professions. For many years, it has been the duty of the author to supervise the work of others, and during his experience he made notes of the best methods under his observation. These notes have been valuable for reference, and the many requests from prominent accountants for access to the notes have influenced the author to publish them. The language is simple, telling how to do certain lines of work so as to lead directly to the desired results and avoid repetition.
