Excerpt from Bookkeeping for Farmers: A Treatise on Farm Accounts Many books have been written on the subject of business education and bookkeeping, but we have looked in vain for a treatise on the keeping of farm accounts, which is at once comprehensive, and yet so stripped of unnecessary complications that the average farmer may practice what it teaches. We have examined numerous text books on the subject and many blank-books, arranged for the purpose of keeping farm accounts, but all of them seem more complicated than is necessary for the use of the great majority of everyday farmers. Our object in the preparation of this little book is to remove from the subject of farm accounts, as far as possible, every thing which might tend to confuse the practical farmer, and so simplify the whole matter that those who read this book will find pleasure in recording their farm operations. If we succeed in this, our work will not have been without results. Editor's Note. To Prof. Atkeson's outline is added, in part II., a description of a somewhat different, but very simple and practical method. The two are sufficient to enable any person, though ignorant of the profession of bookkeeping, to begin and maintain a simple system of accounts that will enable them to know just how the business of the whole farm, or any part of it, stands. The Stock-bridge system is further desirable as having stood the test of actual experience on a large number of farms of various kinds. Excerpt from Book-Keeping for Farmers and Estate Owners: A Practical Treatise Presenting, in Three Plans, a System Adapted for All Classes of Farms The object of this manual is to show that the principles of Book-keeping may be applied to Farmer's Accounts by a simple method and with good results. I have endeavoured to furnish a system of accounts which the farmer will find simple enough to keep correctly, and which will at the same time give him the results of his farming operations in the various departments in which they lie. The substantial advantage to be gained by good bookkeeping is now widely known and acknowledged, but it is feared that very few farmers have hitherto availed themselves of it. Their employment renders them naturally disinclined for close attention to books, and it is not surprising that many of them regard book-keeping as troublesome and useless. It may be also that no clear statement has been presented to them of the application of bookkeeping to farm accounts. Some of the "Account Books" in use among them, although they afford the means of collecting under suggestive headings a variety of useful information, do not give a system of accounts the accuracy of which is capable of proof, and which will show to the farmer how he stands in respect of liabilities and assets. Excerpt from Farm Accounting From the literature on the subject, nearly all of which has been published during the last five or six years, one might be led to think there was something strange and uncommon about the keeping of records of business transactions on the farm. In the last several years, many record books and bulletins on farm bookkeeping and farm costs have been published. With very few exceptions these bulletins deal with the subject from a purely statistical point of view, without involving principles of double entry bookkeeping or the fundamentals of accounting theory. Very often they fail to provide for proper correlation and interpretation of results after they are obtained. These bulletins have proved to be of considerable value, however, in creating a desire on the part of the farmer for a better knowledge concerning his financial condition and progress. Perhaps the reason the subject is considered in the bulletins from the statistical viewpoint only is found in the fact that double entry bookkeeping has been treated so often in the past as a weird and difficult subject unrelated to anything else, requiring familiarity with a great many rules and the use of a great amount of time to operate.
