A 2020 Prose Award Finalist What do we do with pasts we inherit that carry shame? A major and original contribution to thinking about and grappling with the legacies of German and Nazi history, this book reflects on the relationship between history and memory through the personal narrative of a postwar German intellectual. Arguing that the pasts that haunt usare shaped both by the things people did and suffered and the affective traces the past leaves in memory, Born After is a powerful meditation on questions of guilt, complicity, loss, and longing. With bracing honesty and without sentimentality, Bammer draws on her own family story to think anew about a history that we have come to accept as familiar. Inflecting questions about history with questions about ethics, her book speaks to all those concerned with historical pasts that remain unreconciled.

Will you press into heaven at the expense of earth? It has been said that revivals are born after midnight. This is not because midnight is a magic hour—it isn’t—but because anyone truly desiring renewal doesn’t tire at seeking it. Born After Midnight stirs us toward renewal. Be it in the realm of money, worship, worry, or prayer, A. W. Tozer applies God’s high wisdom to our everyday living to show how sin is bitter and Christ is sweet, helping us crave heaven and lose our taste for the world. If you will take God for who He says He is, trust His promises as true, and forsake the world in clutching for heaven, it will cost you everything. But it will give you eternity. Born After Midnight invites you to seek what cannot be lost.

In these pages, the harrowing experiences of women in Tanzania are laid bare. Through poignant and insightful narratives, the book delves into the intricate complexities of cultural practices, memory, trauma, and spirituality. It offers a sobering account of the harsh realities women endure, navigating deeply entrenched gendered cultures that assign lower cultural value to womanhood. However, amidst these challenges, the book reveals the remarkable resilience exhibited by women within Tanzanian society. Drawing from the author’s personal background as a descendant of traditional midwives, one who was a former practitioner of female genital mutilation surgery, this raw and unflinching account provides an authentic portrayal of the realities faced by Tanzanian women. The author’s years spent as a rural pastor in Tanzanian villages have endowed him with a unique perspective, enabling him to draw profound parallels between his mother’s journey into womanhood and his wife’s relentless endeavors to combat gender inequality and violence both within and beyond the church. Through this intimate and revealing lens, readers are invited to explore the intricate intersections of gender, culture, and spirituality in Tanzania. The evocative narratives within this book serve as catalysts, inspiring readers to challenge their preconceptions and take a firm stance against the injustices that women endure. With its captivating storytelling and powerful message, this thought-provoking work is an essential read for individuals interested in delving into gender studies, cultural studies, and the pursuit of social justice.

Italians Then Mexicans Now written by Joel Perlmann and has been published by Russell Sage Foundation this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-11-17 with Social Science categories.

According to the American dream, hard work and a good education can lift people from poverty to success in the "land of opportunity." The unskilled immigrants who came to the United States from southern, central, and eastern Europe in the late 19th and early 20th centuries largely realized that vision. Within a few generations, their descendants rose to the middle class and beyond. But can today's unskilled immigrant arrivals—especially Mexicans, the nation's most numerous immigrant group—expect to achieve the same for their descendants? Social scientists disagree on this question, basing their arguments primarily on how well contemporary arrivals are faring. In Italians Then, Mexicans Now, Joel Perlmann uses the latest immigration data as well as 100 years of historical census data to compare the progress of unskilled immigrants and their American-born children both then and now. The crucial difference between the immigrant experience a hundred years ago and today is that relatively well-paid jobs were plentiful for workers with little education a hundred years ago, while today's immigrants arrive in an increasingly unequal America. Perlmann finds that while this change over time is real, its impact has not been as strong as many scholars have argued. In particular, these changes have not been great enough to force today's Mexican second generation into an inner-city "underclass." Perlmann emphasizes that high school dropout rates among second-generation Mexicans are alarmingly high, and are likely to have a strong impact on the group's well-being. Yet despite their high dropout rates, Mexican Americans earn at least as much as African Americans, and they fare better on social measures such as unwed childbearing and incarceration, which often lead to economic hardship. Perlmann concludes that inter-generational progress, though likely to be slower than it was for the European immigrants a century ago, is a reality, and could be enhanced if policy interventions are taken to boost high school graduation rates for Mexican children. Rich with historical data, Italians Then, Mexicans Now persuasively argues that today's Mexican immigrants are making slow but steady socio-economic progress and may one day reach parity with earlier immigrant groups who moved up into the heart of the American middle class. Given the rapid increase in the worldwide incidence of gestational diabetes, the need for defining the risks and effects associated with raised glucose concentrations in pregnancy is great. Recent large studies are helping to define the risks, as well as identify the benefits of reducing glucose intolerance. Written by an esteemed list of international authors, Gestational Diabetes: Origins, Complications, and Treatment presents timely reviews relating to some of the most important aspects of gestational diabetes, specifically its causes, consequences, and treatments. Divided into five sections, the book begins with a section on metabolism in pregnancy and gestational diabetes, dealing with maternal and foetal glucose metabolism and the controversial area of what actually constitutes gestational diabetes. The next section examines risk factors and causes of gestational diabetes, including the obvious but often overlooked factors—being female and pregnant. The text also outlines environmental and genetic risk factors. The third section deals with the potential complications of gestational diabetes for both mother and offspring, considering short-term and long-term effects. The largest section in the book addresses treatments in an effort to improve the outcome for the mother and the baby. Chapters describe the nutritional approach, considered the cornerstone of treating gestational diabetes, as well as evidence for the role of exercise in its treatment and a useful strategy for treating gestational diabetes pharmacologically. The final section discusses future prospects in screening, diagnosis, prevention, pathophysiology, and treatment of gestational diabetes.
