Since 2008, Berlin has boasted yet another art attraction. That was when Christian Boros opened the home of his private collection in Berlin-Mitte, a bunker built in 1941 that was converted to accommodate his art. To date, 90,000 visitors have seen the first exhibition featuring selected works, exploring the eighty rooms on five floors after registering for guided tours held on weekends. Starting in the fall of 2011, a new set of works will be on view, once again staged by the artists themselves with a keen sense for the architectonic setting. The new hanging features paintings by Tomma Abts, Franz Ackermann, and Thomas Scheibitz, installations by Klara Lidn and Alicja Kwade, and photographs by Wolfgang Tillmans, to name only some of the artists included. This up-to-date book of the collection features high-quality illustrations. The collector himself speaks about the art in a wide-ranging conversation with Heinz-Norbert Jocks.

The Boros Collection's third presentation in the former Reichsbahn bunker showcases recently acquired works in dialogue with pieces from the 1990s and 2000s. Visitors from all over the world are invited to explore the creative positions set out across eighty rooms on five floors in guided tours. Since 2008, when the inaugural exhibition opened in the converted bunker, more than 300,000 people have visited the historic building dating from 1941 in Berlin's Mitte district. In the GDR, it was repurposed as a storage facility for tropical fruits. After the fall of the Wall, it became the legendary techno club "Bunker." The book documents Christian and Karen Boros's collection of contemporary art in the unique ambience of the bunker in sumptuous installation shots and offers an introduction to the works on view.

Rest your eyes long enough on the skylines of Delhi, Guangzhou, Jakarta—even Chicago or London—and you will see the same remarkable transformation, building after building going up with the breakneck speed of twenty-first-century urbanization. But there is something else just as transformative that you won’t see: sprawling networks of tunnels rooting these cities into the earth. Global Undergrounds offers a richly illustrated exploration of these subterranean spaces, charting their global reach and the profound—but often unseen—effects they have on human life. The authors shine their headlamps into an astonishing diversity of manmade underground environments, including subway systems, sewers, communications pipelines, storage facilities, and even shelters. There they find not only an extraordinary range of architectural approaches to underground construction but also a host of different cultural meanings. Underground places can evoke fear or hope; they can serve as sites of memory, places of work, or the hidden headquarters of resistance movements. They are places that can tell a city’s oldest stories or foresee its most distant futures. They are places—ultimately—of both incredible depth and breadth, crucial to all of us topside who work as urban planners, geographers, architects, engineers, or any of us who take subway trains or enjoy fresh water from a faucet. Indeed, as the authors demonstrate, the constant flux within urban undergrounds—the nonstop circulation of people, substances, and energy—serves all city dwellers in myriad ways, not just with the logistics of day-to-day life but as a crucial part of a city’s mythology.

This book explores whether the metaphors of ‘playground’ and ‘battlefield’ might be analytically meaningful terms for understanding contemporary society. The duality of playgrounds and battlefields is presented as a space of continuous becoming, related to the recreation, domination and experience of a place, as well as to corresponding practices of excess, interaction and enjoyment. We believe that a discussion about engagement and responsibility in a modern social setting is possible only through new concepts that avoid binary formulations. Playgrounds and battlefields are thus used as a trigger enabling a fresh approach to a contemporaneity that is highly influenced by the way in which societies deal with their past and future. In this sense, the ‘Playgrounds and Battlefields’ volume is a thematic one, mapping the field and offering grammar of possibility.
