In the years before the Curse of the Bambino descended on New England, the Boston Red Sox rode major league baseball like a colossus, capturing four World Series titles in seven seasons. Blessed with legendary players like Babe Ruth, Tris Speaker, Harry Hooper, and Smokey Joe Wood, and a brand new, thoroughly modern stadium, the Red Sox reigned as kings of the Deadball Era. Just in time for the centenary of baseball's hallowed Fenway Park and the dawn of the Red Sox dynasty, Thomas J. Whalen gracefully recounts the rise and fall of one of baseball's greatest teams.

In this wonderful page-turner, veteran sports journalist Mike Vaccaro brings to life a bygone era in cinematic and intimate detail—and re-creates the magic and suspense of the world’s first classic series. Despite a major presidential election, the near-assassination of Teddy Roosevelt, and the most sensational trial of the young century, baseball dominated front-page headlines in October 1912. The Boston Red Sox and the New York Giants of that year—two of the finest ball clubs that had ever been assembled—went head-to-head in a thrilling eight-game battle that ultimately elevated the World Series from a regional October novelty to a national obsession.

Boston and the American League have shared a history since the circuit's debut in 1901. The Boston Americans outdrew their established National League counterparts the first year of their existence and never looked back. The century-long love affair between Boston and the team that soon became known as the Red Sox began to blossom in 1903 as the Americans captured the first-ever World Series. The Red Sox: From Cy to the Kid depicts the early history of the American League franchise from Boston, beginning with pitching legend Cy Young, center fielder Tris Speaker, and a young phenomenon named Babe Ruth, who defined the team's era of dominance that culminated with the 1918 World Series. The franchise's descent in the 1920s is chronicled, followed by the renaissance of the Yawkey era and the arrival of the game's greatest hitter, Ted Williams, the most significant of several additions that made the Red Sox one of baseball's premier teams of the postwar era.

Before the Boston Red Sox and the Boston Braves, there were the Boston Red Stockings. They were "Boston's First Nine" and 1871 through 1875, they won four consecutive pennants in the old National Association, considered by many to be baseball's first major league. In this five-year period, the team only fielded 22 players - but, then again, these were the days of the "one-man rotation." Who needed two pitchers, when one would do? And if that pitcher was Al Spalding, who won more than 50 games in back-to-back seasons of 1874 and 1875, that one pitcher was pretty good. Of the 22 players on the team, five of them are in the Baseball Hall of Fame. These were different days. The game was played a little differently from today- but not that differently. Take some time and enjoy the work of 38 members of SABR (the Society for American Baseball Research). Several are among our leading nineteenth century baseball experts; others became enthralled digging into the early days of professional baseball in Boston. There are fascinating stories of the men who played the game, the games, the seasons, the tours of Canada and even England and Ireland, where they took on some of the better cricket players of the British Isles, and beat them, too. Take a trip back to those glorious days of yesteryear, and see if you don't become captivated as we were in learning about stories of baseball and life from more than 140 years ago. The book includes recaps of each season, 1871-75, informative articles about the team and front office, and the following player biographies: THE PLAYERS Bob Addy by Peter Morris Ross Barnes by Gregory H.
