Boston University has been synonymous with college hockey excellence for more than eighty years. Since taking the ice for the first time in 1918, the Terriers have fashioned a storied history that has consistently placed the program among the nation's elite. Boston University Hockey chronicles the many National Collegiate Athletic Association Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference, Hockey East, and Beanpot championship team moments; the myriad accomplishments of individual players and coaches, such as Rick Meagher, the "BU Four," Jack Kelley, and Jack Parker; and the overall legacy of achievement by the long line of skaters who have donned the scarlet-and-white sweaters. The illustrations in Boston University Hockey (including many that have never been published elsewhere) offer a compelling view of a team that has won more national titles than any other eastern college hockey school.

Over the winter of 1977-78, anyone within shouting distance of a two-mile stretch of Boston's Commonwealth Avenue - from Fenway Park to the trolley curve at Packard's Corner - found themselves pulled into the orbit of college hockey. The hottest ticket in a sports-mad city was Boston University's Terriers, a team so tough it was said they didn't have fans - they took hostages. Eschewing the usual recruiting pools in Canada, Jack Parker and his coaching staff assembled a squad that included three stars from nearby Charlestown, then known as the "armed robbery capital of America." Jack Parker's Wiseguys is the story of a high-flying, headline-dominating, national championship squad led by three future stars of the Miracle on Ice, the medal-round game the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team won against the heavily favored Soviet Union. Now retired, Parker is a thoughtful statesman for the sport, a revered figure who held the longest tenure of any coach in Boston sports history. But during the 1977-78 season, he was just five years into his reign - and only a decade or so older than his players. Fiery, mercurial, as tough as any of his tough guys, Parker and his team were to face the pressure-cooker expectations of four previous also-ran seasons, further heightened by barroom brawls, off-the-ice shenanigans, and the citywide shutdown caused by one of the biggest blizzards to ever hit the Northeast. This season was to be Parker's watershed, a roller-coaster ride of nail-biting victories and unimaginable tragedy, played out in increasingly strident headlines as his team opened the season with an unprecedented twenty-one straight wins. Only the second loss of the year eliminated the Terriers from their league playoffs and possibly from national contention; hours after the game Parker's wife died from cancer. The story of how the team responded - coming back to win the national championship a week after Parker buried his wife - makes a compelling tale for Boston sports fans and everyone else who feels a thrill of pride at America's unlikely win over the Soviet national team - a victory forged on Commonwealth Avenue in that bitter, beautiful winter of '78.

With five Division I national championships to its credit—most recently in 2012—the men’s hockey program at Boston College is a force to be reckoned with year after year. Tales from the Boston College Hockey Locker Room details the long and highly successful history of ice hockey at Boston College, from the informal “ice polo” competition held among students at BC’s original campus in the South End of Boston in the 1890s, to the establishment of a formal varsity ice hockey program shortly after the school relocated to its present-day home in Chestnut Hill a century ago, and on to the emergence of Boston College hockey as one of the most successful programs in all of collegiate sports. This book blends research; interviews with coaches, players, and fans of Eagles hockey; and scores of anecdotes about the high points—and a few slips that occurred along the way—in the building of Boston College’s fabled hockey tradition. Many of the legends are covered in this book, including coach John “Snooks” Kelley, Len Ceglarski, Jerry York, the Morrissey brothers, James “Sonny” Foley, Bill Hogan, Jr., Ed “Butch” Songin, the tandem of Tom “Red” Martin and Billy Daley, and Tim Sheehy. Modern-day Eagles greats also have a prominent place, from Joe Mullen, to Brian Leetch, David Emma, Brian Gionta, and more. Fans of Boston College hockey, as well as college sports aficionados everywhere, will find this book to be an entertaining and fact-filled volume of tales and accomplishments of one of the nation’s premier intercollegiate sports programs. Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Sports Publishing imprint, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in sports—books about baseball, pro football, college football, pro and college basketball, hockey, or soccer, we have a book about your sport or your team. Whether you are a New York Yankees fan or hail from Red Sox nation; whether you are a die-hard Green Bay Packers or Dallas Cowboys fan; whether you root for the Kentucky Wildcats, Louisville Cardinals, UCLA Bruins, or Kansas Jayhawks; whether you route for the Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens, or Los Angeles Kings; we have a book for you. Few schools, if any, have a reverence for their history as Cornell University does for its hockey program. The tradition is largely a winning one, punctuated by the only perfect season of the modern era, a 29-0 mark in the 1969-1970 season. Started on a frozen pond in 1900, Cornell hockey was revitalized in the late 1950s with the completion of the campus's first indoor facility, Lynah Rink. Since then, names like Ken Dryden, Ned Harkness, Lance Nethery, Joe Nieuwendyk, Daren Eliot, Mike Schafer, and David LeNeveu have won championship after championship. Their stories are recounted in Cornell University Hockey.

They call him 'Wilde Man'. Rumor has it he's an animal on the ice and between the sheets.Like the rest of the female population, I've been crushing on Clancy Wilde, the captain of Boston University's hockey team, since the first time I saw him. Big, blond, and charming, he ticks all the boxes. When we find ourselves at a wedding, drunk and flirting, I know I can finally check this tattooed, bad boy, hockey player off my wish list. One night is all it was meant to be, until I see two pink lines on the pregnancy test. How did the notch on my belt turn into a ball and chain?

Kooks And Degenerates On Ice written by Thomas J. Whalen and has been published by Rowman & Littlefield this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-05-13 with Sports & Recreation categories.

Celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Boston Bruins’ 1970 Stanley Cup championship season by reliving all the moments in Kooks and Degenerates on Ice. While the United States seethed from racial violence, war, and mass shootings, the 1969-70 “Big, Bad Bruins,” led by the legendary Bobby Orr, brushed off their perennial losing ways to defeat the St. Louis Blues in the Stanley Cup Finals for their first championship in 29 years. In Kooks and Degenerates on Ice: Bobby Orr, the Big Bad Bruins, and the Stanley Cup Championship That Transformed Hockey, Thomas J. Whalen recounts all the memorable moments from that championship season. Behind the no-nonsense yet inspired leadership of head coach Harry Sinden, the once laughingstock Bruins became the talk of the sporting world. Nicknamed the “Big, Bad Bruins” for their propensity to out-brawl and intimidate their opponents, the team rallied around the otherworldly play of Bobby Orr and his hard-hitting teammates to take the NHL by surprise in a season to remember. Kooks and Degenerates on Ice brings to life all the colorful personalities and iconic players from this Stanley Cup-raising team. In addition, the season is placed into its historical context as the United States struggled with issues of war, race, politics, and class, making this a must-read for sports enthusiasts, hockey fans, and those interested in twentieth-century American history.
