“Chi vede nella moda soltanto la moda è uno sciocco”, sentenziava Honoré de Balzac nel 'Trattato della vita elegante'. Moda significa modo di atteggiarsi, di agghindarsi. Con questo termine, soprattutto se guardiamo al passato, solitamente ci si riferisce alla classe blasonata ma le tendenze del costume, seppure in ritardo e modificate, di fatto coinvolgono anche i ceti più bassi. Il Quattrocento fu un'epoca di grandi cambiamenti e innovazioni, tanto da decretare per alcuni il passaggio dal Medioevo all'Età Moderna. Nei primi decenni di tale temperie socio-culturale la moda risente ancora del linearismo verticale trecentesco tipicamente gotico mentre, progredendo verso le soglie del Cinquecento, l'abbigliamento, così come il tipo fisico, assume una connotazione spiccatamente rinnovata. Questa ricerca intende prendere in esame il costume italiano nel XV secolo, analizzando gli abiti femminili, maschili e infantili, insieme agli accessori, ai tessuti e ai colori, attraverso lo studio correlato di reperti originali, documenti, leggi suntuarie e fonti iconografiche. L'autrice tenta così di evidenziare la complessa struttura sartoriale dei principali capi in uso nelle varie classi sociali, proponendo anche ricostruzioni di propria creazione, svelando il valore e il significato che al tempo veniva attribuito all'apparire. “He who sees only fashion in fashion is a fool”, proclaimed Honoré de Balzac in his Treatise on Elegant Living. Fashion means way of taking an attitude, way of primping. This term, especially if we consider the past, is usually referred to the aristocracy, yet the costume trends, even though delayed and modified, actually affect the lower class too. The 15th century was an age of sweeping changes and innovations, to such an extent that, according to some, it caused the transition from the Middle Ages to the Modern Era. During the first decades of the aforementioned socio-cultural context, fashion was still conveying the 14th c. vertical linearity, typical of the Gothic style; on the other hand, by approaching the threshold of the 16th c., the attire, as well as the physical type, assumed clearly renewed overtones. This rasearch aims to investigate the 15th c. Italian costume, exploring the male, female and infant clothing, together with their accessories, textiles and colors, by means of an interrelated study of original relics, documents, sumptuary laws and iconographic sources. Thus the author attempts to highlight the complex sartorial structure of the main garments used by the different social classes, also presenting a few replicas, entirely handmade by herself, unveiling the value and the meaning ascribed to appearance at that time. L'autore Paola Fabbri è diplomata in “Disegno del figurino e storia del costume” presso l’Istituto Marangoni Fashion e Design di Milano. Nel mondo del living-history è stimata sia in Italia che all'estero per l'elevato livello di accuratezza delle proprie creazioni sartoriali, raggiunto dopo oltre 20 anni di ricerche ed esperimenti ricostruttivi. Fin dal 2003 è impegnata come relatrice in conferenze sul tema dell’abbigliamento storico maschile e femminile, in particolare per i secoli compresi tra XIII e XVI; nel 2005 ha avviato una stretta collaborazione con la Dott.ssa Lucia Portoghesi, nell'ambito del restauro del corredo funebre di Gregorio VII (X secolo) e di Diego Cavaniglia (XV secolo). Del farsetto appartenuto a quest'ultimo ha prodotto una replica fedele in ogni dettaglio, oggi conservata unitamente all'originale presso il Convento di San Francesco a Folloni di Montella (AV).

Angelo Sindoni ha studiato nelle Università di Milano statale e di Messina, dove si è laureato con lode in Lettere Moderne (relatore Prof. Alberto Monticone; correlatore Prof. Rosario Villari). Subito dopo, nel 1968, ha vinto una borsa di studio biennale (in Storia contemporanea) presso l’Università di Messina; nel 1970 si è trasferito all’Università di Perugia dove, a partire dal 1972, è stato assistente ordinario di Storia contemporanea. Nel 1985/86 vinceva il concorso a cattedra di prima fascia in Storia moderna e da quell’anno è rimasto incardinato a Storia Moderna presso la Facoltà di Lettere e Filosofia dell’Università di Messina. Sindoni è autore di numerose pubblicazioni scientifiche edite in varie sedi. Tra i libri si ricorda anzitutto Dal riformismo assolutistico al cattolicesimo sociale (2 voll., Edizioni Studium, Roma 1984), un’opera che ha aperto un nuovo filone di indagini, coltivate soprattutto dall’Istituto teologico “G. Guttadauro” di Caltanissetta e dall’operoso Centro Studi “Cammarata” di S. Cataldo, promosso dal compianto arcivescovo Cataldo Naro. Tra i libri da ricordare anche Vito D’Ondes Reggio. La Chiesa, lo Stato, il Mezzogiorno (Studium, Roma 1991), nonché il più il recente Società precapitalistica e modernità in Sicilia (Rubbettino 2013). Tra le relazioni a Convegni si ricorda quella tenuta alla Normale di Pisa nel 1989, in rappresentanza della Sicilia, al Convegno organizzato dall’Associazione degli Storici Europei per il Bicentenario della Rivoluzione francese e quella tenuta all’Università di Roma “Sapienza”, Le città italiane (Nord, Sud, Centro) verso l’Unità del Paese, tenuta al Convegno Le città italiane e il processo di unificazione nazionale, in occasione del 150° dell’Unità d’Italia. Ha collaborato con il CNRS francese, con l’École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales di Parigi, con le Università di Valladolid, Cambridge e altri Atenei americani, organizzando vari convegni internazionali. Sindoni ha diretto numerosi progetti di ricerca nazionali ed è stato ideatore e coordinatore del Dottorato di “Storia dell’Europa mediterranea in età moderna e contemporanea”. Ha ricoperto anche diversi incarichi di governance accademica, in particolare dal 2008 al 2013 è stato Prorettore dell’Università di Messina, con delega al Patrimonio storico, artistico e bibliotecario.

Genesis è la rivista della Società Italiana delle Storiche. Fondata nel 2002, si avvale di un processo di peer review. Il suo ambito è la storia di genere e la storia delle donne. Genesis non intende privilegiare alcun approccio storiografico, ma fa interagire le diverse prospettive per fornire uno spaccato rappresentativo della ricerca più sensibile e aggiornata. Le riflessioni sul passato sono strettamente connesse a una particolare attenzione alle questioni più attuali della politica contemporanea, in prospettiva transnazionale. Genesis, nelle sue varie sezioni tematiche, travalica confini di spazio e tempo, incoraggiando i lavori che puntano a superare confini nazionali ed eurocentrismi , nel quadro di un approccio multidisciplinare in cui interagiscono storia e scienze sociali. La rivista pubblica articoli in italiano, inglese, francese e spagnolo. Pur essendo rivolta a un pubblico di riferimento prevalentemente scientifico, la rivista affronta temi che incontrano anche l'interesse di un più vasto pubblico di lettori.
