À PROPOS DE L'AUTEURE Mélissa Hanus est Députée fédérale de Belgique. Elle est élue le 26 mai 2019 dans la circonscription de la Province de Luxembourg. Née le 8 octobre 1992 à Arlon, elle a obtenu un Master en Sciences du Travail à l’Université Libre de Bruxelles en 2016 puis une Agrégation en Sciences Sociales à l’Université de Liège en 2019. Lors de son premier jour à la Chambre des Représentants, Mélissa Hanus portait un T-shirt à l’effigie de Martin Luther King comme symbole contre la montée de l’extrême droite en Belgique.

The effort to go beyond given knowledge in different domains – artistic, scientific, political, metaphysical – is a characteristic driving force in modernism and the avant-gardes. The fifth volume of the EAM series casts light on the history and actuality of investigations, quests and explorations in the European avant-garde and modernism from the late 19th century to the present day. This book looks at the fundamental components of national identity as understood by ordinary nation members, and the way in which it is mobilised by political elites. Drawing on an original case comparison between Wales and the Basque Country, the author suggests there are many commonalities between these two nations, particularly around the fundamentals of their national identities. However, differences occur in terms of degree of intensity of feeling and around the politicisation of identity, with more entrenched and hostile political positioning in the Basque Country than Wales. Through a multi-level comparison, the book generates insights into national identity as a theoretical concept and in a ‘stateless nation’ context. It argues for national identity's intangible, yet polemical, nature, looking at the primordialist way it is understood, its permanence and importance, coupled with its lack of everyday salience and consequent obligations.

As a high-ranking international civil servant, diplomat, teacher, activist and accomplished jurist, Adama Dieng has inspired, and indeed continues to inspire, a generation of men and women both in Africa and beyond with his unqualified commitment to the advancement of the ideals reflected in the United Nations Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Through his work and commitment to the cause of international justice and conflict prevention, he has consistently placed the interests of his fellow men and women, and indeed those of his continent, before his own interests. It is, therefore, in recognition of his efforts that, his fellow jurists, friends and colleagues decided to honour his contribution through a collection of essays on a life dedicated to the advancement of international peace and justice through the rule of law. The contributions gathered here represent, in good measure, the values and beliefs in rule of law and human rights that have characterized Adama’s commitment to work towards a better Africa and a better world.
