A woman struggles with love, work, and identity in a novel by “one of the finest and most necessary voices in contemporary American and Caribbean fiction” (Colum McCann, author of Let the Great World Spin). Anna, a Caribbean American immigrant, is eager to assimilate in her new country—but she is about to discover that a gap yawns between her and American-born citizens. The head of a specialized imprint at a major publishing house, Anna is soon challenged for her position by an ambitious upstart who accuses her of not really understanding American culture—particularly African American culture. Her job at stake, Anna turns for advice to her boyfriend, a fellow Caribbean American himself, but even here she finds conflict—in this riveting, thoughtful novel about immigration, family dynamics, race, and relationships, in which “many moments of elegant, overarching insight bind the personal to the collective past” (The New York Times Book Review). “Spare and transcendent prose . . . a unique and riveting perspective on Caribbean life as well as immigrant life in general.” —The New York Amsterdam News “If I wore a hat, I’d tip it to novelist Elizabeth Nunez. [Boundaries] is timely and provocative—and it’s written with such vivid prose that, despite the bittersweet ending, you’ll step away from this refreshing take on contemporary publishing with a smile.” —Essence “In Nunez’s latest, the author further explores immigrant life, a life where a hard-working woman can progress up the corporate ladder, buy an apartment in a soon-to-be trendy neighborhood, and still be plagued by outsider’s angst. A thoughtful literary novel exploring the shadows of cultural identity and the mirage of assimilation.” —Kirkus Reviews “A quiet, sensitive portrait . . . This work covers a lot of ground, from mother-daughter and male-female relationships to the tensions between immigrants and the American born.” —Library Journal “Deftly dissects the immigrant experience in light of cultural traditions that impact family roles, professional obligations, and romantic opportunities.” —Booklist

They could not be more different, more representative of “the other,” as Mady is reminded by her extended Jewish family when she finds herself drawn to this quiet, puzzling man. Yet, love and ease sometimes come where we least expect them.

The Boundaries Of Fiction written by Everett Zimmerman and has been published by Cornell University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996 with English fiction categories.

Focusing on canonical works by Daniel Defoe, Henry Fielding, Laurence Sterne, and others, this book explains the relationship between British fiction and historical writing when both were struggling to attain status and authority. History was at once powerful and vulnerable in the empiricist climate of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century England, suspect because of its reliance on testimony, yet essential if empiricism were ever to move beyond natural philosophy. The Boundaries of Fiction shows how, in this time of historiographical instability, the British novel exploited analogies to history. Titles incorporating the term ?history,? pseudo-editors presenting pseudo-documentary ?evidence,? and narrative theorizing about historical truth were some of the means used to distinguish novels from the fictions of poetry and other literary forms. These efforts, Everett Zimmerman maintains, amounted to a critique of history's limits and pointed to the novel's power to transcend them. He offers rich analyses of texts central to the tradition of the novel, chiefly Clarissa, Tom Jones, and Tristram Shandy, and concludes with discussions of Sir Walter Scott's development of the historical novel and David Hume's philosophy of history. Along the way, Zimmerman refers to such other important historical figures as John Locke, Richard Bentley, William Wotton, and Edward Gibbon and engages contemporary thinkers, including Paul Ricoeur and Michel Foucault, who have addressed the philosophical and methodological issues of historical evidence and narrative.

Fragile Boundaries written by R E Vaughn and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-05-02 with categories.

R.E Vaughn's Fragile Boundaries is a collection of fifteen short fiction pieces, each an unsettling but realistic glimpse through the window of other people's lives. Readers will find this new and upcoming author's daring and provocative stories more character driven than plot intensive, with an emphasis on the imperfections of the human dynamic, placing ordinary people in unusual yet believable situations and settings, some dark and malevolent, others light and humorous, all undeniably interesting. Inside you'll find a reader favorite "Lambs Shouldn't Mess with Lions," a bruising memory about young people in a southern high school who love and hate like crazy, set in a time when grievances were settled with fists and not guns, by a generation then just as vulnerable to all the temptations and dreams as teens of today; "Joy Ride," a journey of discovery for a couple in a dying relationship that can't be rescued; and "How To Set A Woman On Fire," in which a young mother, recently widowed, lets known her priorities to the man relentlessly pursuing her affection. Writing in the voice of characters readers aren't likely soon to forget, R.E. Vaughn offers a unique view in the everyday lives and dreams of totally ordinary people in situations not so ordinary.
