Place is an important element in understanding health and health care disparities. More that merely a geographic location, place is a socio-ecological force with detectable effects on social life, independent well-being, and health. Despite the general enthusiasm for the study of place and the potential it could have for a better understanding of the distribution of health in different communities, research is at a difficult crossroads because of disagreements in how the construct should be conceptualized and measured. This edited volume incorporates an cross-disciplinary approach to the study of place, in order to come up with a comprehensive and useful definition of place. Topics covered include: Social Inequalities, Historical Definitions of Place, Biology and Place, Rural vs. Urban Places, Racialization of a Place, Migration, Sacred Places, Technological Innovations An understanding of place is essential for health care professionals, as interventions often do not have the same effects in the clinic as they do in varied, naturalistic social settings.

Using the concept of boundaries, physical and cultural, to understand the development of China’s maritime southeast in late Imperial times, and its interactions across maritime East Asia and the broader Asian Seas, these linked essays by a senior scholar in the field challenge the usual readings of Chinese history from the centre. After an opening essay which positions China’s southeastern coast within a broader view of maritime Asia, the first section of the book looks at boundaries, between “us” and “them”, Chinese and other, during this period. The second section looks at the challenges to such rigid demarcations posed by the state and existed in the status quo. The third section discusses movements of people, goods and ideas across national borders and cultural boundaries, seeing tradition and innovation as two contesting forces in a constant state of interaction, compromise and reconciliation. This approach underpins a fresh understanding of China’s boundaries and the distinctions that separate China from the rest of the world. In developing this theme, Ng Chin-keong draws on many years of writing and research in Chinese and European archives. Of interest to students of migration, of Chinese history, and of the long term perspective on relations between China and its region, Ng’s analysis provides a crucial background to the historical shared experience of the people in Asian maritime zones. The result is a novel way of approaching Chinese history, argued from the perspective of a fresh understanding of China’s relations with neighbouring territories and the populations residing there, and of the nature of tradition and its persistence in the face of changing circumstances.

Approaching the questions of boundaries and borderlands from the perspective of localities, 14 chapters are presented in the spirit of the recognition that borders are at the same time physical demarcations between territories, linear representations on maps, and ideas rooted in social practices. Kaplan (geography, Kent State U.) and Hakli (regional studies, U. of Tampere) organize the contributions into sections dealing with boundaries in the new Europe, change in the "established" Europe, and change in the emerging Europe. Case studies are drown from Catalonia, the Basque region, Northern Italy, the Upper Rhine Valley, Northern Ireland, Finland, Eastern Slavonia, the Polish-Ukrainian border, and Estonia. How is it that walls, borders, boundaries—and their material and symbolic architectures of division and exclusion—engender their very opposite? This edited volume explores the crossings, permeations, and constructions of cultural and political borders between peoples and territories, examining how walls, borders, and boundaries signify both interdependence and contact within sites of conflict and separation. Topics addressed range from the geopolitics of Europe’s historical and contemporary city walls to conceptual reflections on the intersection of human rights and separating walls, the memory politics generated in historically disputed border areas, theatrical explorations of border crossings, and the mapping of boundaries within migrant communities.

This book provides an in-depth analysis of border and boundary enactments in post-war and “deeply divided” societies. By exploring everyday places in post-conflict societies, it critically examines official narratives of how ethno-national divisions arise and are sustained. It challenges traditional accounts regarding the role that international intervention has in producing and/or weakening boundaries in such societies, while questioning clear-cut distinctions between the local and the international.

Adopting an integrated, multidisciplinary approach to the political geography of the Indian Ocean, this study analyses the Law of the Sea, evaluates the national legislation of those Indian Ocean littoral states which have proclaimed their maritime limits over offshore waters, examines the numerous bilateral and trilateral agreements on continental shelf and seabed limits of the states in the region. It also previews the potential demarcations in the region of study. Apart from its well written text, perhaps the most important aspect of the work is the exceptional series of beautifully drawn maps and diagrams accompanied by detailed captions or commentaries, a unique collection worthy of publication on its own.

Proxemic studies concentrate on the structure and organization of space, its design and use, allocation, and the relations encoded in it as aspects of cultural communication. Space is perceived through the senses, and since cultures use the senses differently, they create boundaries differently. Pellow, in her edited collection of boundary studies, focuses on the social conception and production of boundedness. The essays by 10 scholars, eight of them anthropologists, explore the nature of boundaries in terms of change, space and place, society and culture, politics, class, urbanization, housing, and secular and spiritual life.

Summary of Set Boundaries, Find Peace Set Boundaries, Find Peace is an outstanding and the most recent self-help book by Nedra Glover Tawwab; an experienced therapist who has worked in helping many people deal with unhealthy relationships. The book kicks off with the author sharing a preview of her life. She explains how drained she was when going through life saying yes to every request from people. That was until she discovered the benefits that lie in setting boundaries. With this discovery, she moved from someone who always has unfulfilling relationships to someone who finds confidence, and happiness in boundaries setting which in turn brings about healthier relationships. In the introduction to Set Boundaries, Find Peace, Nedra Glover Tawwab discusses how in her fourteen years of being a therapist, she noticed that most of the problems people sought to solve are problems caused by lack of boundaries. The book gives an in-depth analysis of what boundaries are and all it entails. Relationships are demanding and if there isn’t a limitation set in place, one can be certain of feeling burnout, overwhelmed and somewhat resentful. These are not only caused by the lack of time for the many ostensible responsibilities in every relationship but by the inability to turn down requests or express a feeling of discomfort. The book explains the different subtle, unhealthy, and unsuccessful ways in which boundaries are created while proffering a lasting, healthy and effective solution to creating boundaries. Not only this, the book prepares you for the different reactions to expect from implementing boundaries as stated in this book. To achieve boundary setting, NedraTawwab gives practical steps to follow regardless of the type of relationship you are setting it for.
