This book is a development of the author's involvement in the field of Boundary Elements (B.E.), and of Boundary Elements in dynamics in particular, over a period of sixteen years. The intent is for it to summarize the current state of the Boundary Element Method (BEM) in dynamics of continua. The main emphasis is on the development of the different B.E. formulations for time dependent problems and the necessary mathematical transformations to produce computer codes which are able to solve scalar, elastic and poroelastic wave propagation problems. Nevertheless, there is also a substantial part of the book which covers the application of the BEM to important engineering problems in dynamics. The mathematics involved in the book has been developed to the necessary degree to make it as self-contained as possible. Readers with almost no background in B.E. or in dynamics should be able to follow the text. Boundary Elements in Dynamics has been written with a dual purpose. The intent is for it to be not only a reference book for researchers and engineers, but also a book from which scientists, graduate students and practising engineers can learn in detail the formulation, implementation and practical applications of the BEM in dynamics. The book could serve as a text to a course on Boundary Elements in Dynamics or as a supplement to other books in a more general course.

This book Boundary Elements in Fluid Dynamics is the second volume of the two volume proceedings of the International Conference on Computer Modelling of Seas and Coastal Regions and Boundary Elements and Fluid Dynamics, held in Southampton, U.K., in April 1992. The Boundary Element Method (BEM) is now fully established as an ac curate and successful technique for solving engineering problems in a wide range of fields. The success of the method is due to its advantages in data reduction, as only the boundary of the region is modelled. Thus moving boundaries may be more easily handled, which is not the case if domain methods are used. In addition, the method is easily able to model regions to extending to infinity. Fluid mechanics is traditionally one of the most challenging areas of engi neering, the simulation of fluid motion, particularly in three dimensions, is always a serious test for any numerical method, and is an area in which BEM analysis may be used taking full advantage of its special characteris tics. The conference includes sections on turbomachinery, aerodynamics, viscous flow and turbulence models, and special flow situations. The organisers would like to thank the International Scientific Advisory Committee, the conference delegates and all of those who have actively supported the meet ing.

Boundary Elements contains the proceedings of the International Conference on Boundary Elements Methods held at Beijing, China on October 14-17, 1986. The conference aims at interchanging the developments of the boundary element method or the boundary integral equation method, as well as the techniques and advances in many engineering, physical, or mechanical field. The various papers presented in the conference are organized in this book into eight parts. Part I talks about engineering in general. Subsequent parts focus on fluid mechanics, thermo-mechanics, solid mechanics, and dynamics. Applications of boundary elements method to shell and plate analyses, as well as to other types of analysis, are also shown in other parts in this book.

Covering state-of-the-art developments in this field of engineering analysis, this volume consists of the papers presented at an international conference devoted to the boundary element method. It addresses areas of active research related to the BEM community, such as meshless techniques, advanced formulations and high performance computing. Further work in the dual reciprocity method is also discussed. Other papers reflect late-20th century advances in fluid dynamics, fracture and damage mechanics, acoustics and electromagnetism, while there is also a section on the industrial implementation of the technique, and the way in which it can be used as a tool.

This best-selling text provides a simple introduction to the Boundary Element Method. Based on the authors' long teaching experience it is designed to convey in the most effective manner the fundamentals of the method. The book is presented in a way which makes it accessible to both undergraduate and graduate students as well as to practising engineers who want to learn the foundations of the technique. Of particular interest is the way in which Boundary Element concepts are introduced and immediately applied in simple, but useful, computer codes to facilitate understanding. A CD with the complete listing of program codes in Fortran is also included.

This series has been developed in response to the interest shown in boundary ele ments by scientists and engineers. Whilst Volume I was dedicated to basic principles and applications, this book is concerned with the state of the art in the solution of time-dependent problems. Since papers have recently been published on this im portant topic it is time to produce a work ofa morepermanent nature. The volume begins with a chapter on the Fundamentals of Boundary Integral Equation Methods in Elastodynamics. After reviewing the basic equations of elasto dynamics, the wave equation and dynamic reciprocal theorems are stated and the direct and indirect boundary element formulations are presented. Eigenvalue problems are discussed together with the case of the Fourier transformations. Several applications illustrate the etfectiveness ofthe technique for engineering. Chapter 2 examines some ofthe various boundary integral equation formulations available for elastodynamic problems. In particular the displacement-traction for mulation is compared with the displacement-potential case. The special character istics ofthe elastodynamics fundamental solutions are discussed in detail and a criti cal comparison with the elastostatics case is presented. While the chapter is not meant to be a complete review of the work in the field, the original presentation of the problern and the suggestions for further work make an important contribu tion to the development ofthe method.
