This book provides an analysis of the politics of consumption and how the ‘educated consumer’ plays a vital role in advancing responsible market practices and consumption. Based on a comprehensive interdisciplinary perspective, it explores the extent, drives and links of boycotting, buycotting, labelling schemes and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in 20 European countries. A central question addressed is whether macro-societal patterns of orientation concerning the roles of the state, companies and citizens can explain individual and cross-national differences in boycotting and buycotting. As the book shows, there is not one type of ‘political consumer’, but several, and their occurrence is directly connected to national variations of labelling schemes and Corporate Social Responsibility. Consumers need reference points and information on the political backgrounds of purchases, and policy makers must address that need through political measures which fit to the national patterns in views about cooperation and market relationships.

Wie wirkt sich die Unterstützung des politischen Systems durch die Gesellschaftsmitglieder auf deren politische Partizipation aus? Bislang ging die Forschungsliteratur davon aus, dass Personen mit einer ausgeprägten Unterstützung des politischen Systems eher verfasste politische Partizipationsformen nutzen, während Personen mit einer geringen Unterstützung eher unverfasste politische Partizipationsformen nutzen. Dominik Allenspach vertritt die These, dass die Effekte u-förmig sind. Das heißt, dass sowohl Personen mit einer ausgeprägten als auch solche mit einer geringen Unterstützung des politischen Systems verfasste und unverfasste politische Partizipationsformen nutzen, während Personen, die gegenüber dem politischen System indifferent sind, nicht politisch partizipieren. Der Autor hat das Vorhandensein dieser Effekte für verschiedene westliche Demokratien geprüft. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Effekte der Unterstützung des politischen Systems auf die verschiedenen politischen Partizipationsformen primär u-förmig, in manchen Fällen aber auch invers u-förmig sind.

Die Erforschung des politischen Verhaltens von Burgern hat in der Politikwissenschaft und der Politischen Soziologie Tradition. Erinnert sei an das Aufkommen der empiri schen Wahlforschung wiihrend und dann vor allem nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg, an die klassischen Studien 'The civic culture' von Almond & Verba (1963) und 'Political life. Why people get involved in politics' von Lane (1959). Besondere Aufmerksamkeit erlangte die politische Partizipation nach den Unruhen von 1968, naeh der Falsifizie rung der These vom Ende der Ideologie. Nicht mehr die Beteiligung der Burger an Wah len, sondern die Teilnahme an politischen Demonstrationen, der Griff zu zivilem Unge horsam und politischer Gewalt standen im Mittelpunkt des Interesses. Die Studie 'Political action' hat das politische Verhalten von Burgern in acht westlichen Indu striegesellschaften urn die Mitte der siebziger Jahre untersucht. Die darin postulierte Gliederung politischer Verhaltensweisen in konventionelle und unkonventionelle Formen hat breite Aufnahme gefunden. Nicht nur unkonventionelle Massenbewegungen, son dern auch der Linksterrorismus fUhrtcn in der Bundesrepublik zu einer starken Bela stung des politischen Systems. Das terroristische Handeln stand im Mittelpunkt des Forschungsvorhabens 'Ursachenforschung Terrorismus' des Bundesministers des Innern. Innerhalb dieser Forschung untersuchte das Projekt 'Jugend und Staat' Motivationsmu ster bei jungeren Burgern, die zu Systemfeindschaft und politischer Illcgalitiit fuhren. Die vorliegende Studie soli einen Beitrag zur Frage der Struktierung politischer Par tizipationsformen liefern. Die Interpretation politischcr Aktivitiiten als konventionell oder unkonventionell wird kritisch hinterfragt.

Inhaltsangabe:Einleitung: Reinhard Brandt erkennt in seinem Artikel, Moral in Zahlen - Die weltweite Empörung trifft die amerikanische Ökonomie einen Zusammenhang zwischen dem Image-Schaden, den Amerika durch den Irakkrieg und den Kampf gegen den Terror hinnehmen musste und den Umsatzeinbußen amerikanischer Unternehmen im Ausland. Er kommentiert die Entwicklung folgendermaßen: Dass die Moral einen ökonomischen Schaden anrichten kann, ist ein ungeahnter Triumph der idealistischen Sittlichkeit. Die reine Moral wird praktisch, und dies in einer nachweislichen Art, in Zahlen von so und so vielen Milliarden Dollar! Hier liegt die Chance des moralischen Fortschritts. [ ] So könnte das freie moralische Urteil auch in Zukunft seine Wirksamkeit entfalten und einen heilsamen Einfluss auf das äußere Verhalten ausüben. In einer Meldung des Handelsjournals wird Brandts Aussage präzisiert: Verbraucher in Europa und den USA reagieren beim Einkauf auf die Irak-Krise: Sie meiden oder bevorzugen bestimmte Produkte. Dieses Beispiel zeigt einen Trend, der immer mehr Raum in den Köpfen der Konsumenten zu gewinnen scheint: Ökologische, soziale und politische Faktoren spielen eine zunehmende Rolle bei der Determinierung des Konsumverhaltens. Ein Produkt wie Mecca Cola hätte sicherlich kaum Chancen gehabt, in den gesättigten Markt der Softdrinks einzudringen, ohne die deutliche politische Positionierung als islamische Alternative zur amerikanischen Coca Cola. Kann Konsum bewusstes politisches Ausdrucksmittel und damit Mittel politischer Partizipation sein?
