Brainstorms Fortieth Anniversary Edition written by Daniel C. Dennett and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-12-15 with Psychology categories.

An anniversary edition of a classic in cognitive science, with a new introduction by the author. When Brainstorms was published in 1978, the interdisciplinary field of cognitive science was just emerging. Daniel Dennett was a young scholar who wanted to get philosophers out of their armchairs—and into conversations with psychologists, linguists, computer scientists. This collection of seventeen essays by Dennett offers a comprehensive theory of mind, encompassing traditional issues of consciousness and free will. Using careful arguments and ingenious thought experiments, the author exposes familiar preconceptions and hobbling intuitions. The essays are grouped into four sections: “Intentional Explanation and Attributions of Mentality”; “The Nature of Theory in Psychology”; “Objects of Consciousness and the Nature of Experience”; and “Free Will and Personhood.” This anniversary edition includes a new introduction by Dennett, “Reflections on Brainstorms after Forty Years,” in which he recalls the book's original publication by Harry and Betty Stanton of Bradford Books and considers the influence and afterlife of some of the essays. For example, “Mechanism and Responsibility” was Dennett's first articulation of his concept of the intentional stance; “Are Dreams Experiences?” anticipates the major ideas in his 1991 book Consciousness Explained; and “Where Am I?” has been variously represented in a BBC documentary, a student's Javanese shadow puppet play, and a feature-length film made in the Netherlands, Victim of the Brain.

From Loneliness To Solitude In Person Centred Health Care written by Stephen Buetow and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-08-26 with Medical categories.

This innovative book provides a new conceptual analysis of loneliness – a condition associated with severe health consequences, including increased morbidity and early death. Arguing that social connection is not the only answer, it explores pathways for transforming loneliness to healthy solitude. The first part of the book draws on the humanities and arts, including psychology, philosophy, and literature to analyse the common, and potentially serious, problem of loneliness. It makes the case that the condition is less a deficiency than a state of self-disconnection that modernity feeds through social forces. The second part of the book looks at how person-centred health care can help educate persons to transform loneliness into healthy solitude. It provides an analysis of self-connection and spiritual connection, discussing how these forms of contact can mitigate risks associated with both lack of social connection, and social connection itself, such as self-disconnection and rejection by others. It goes on to demonstrate that connection to the self and spirit can make aloneness a resource and facilitate access to benefits of connecting with others. This thought-provoking book provides students, scholars, and practitioners from a range of health and social care backgrounds with a new way of thinking about, researching, and practising with lonely people.

40th Anniversary Retrospective written by Kathleen Sideli and Walter Nugent and has been published by AuthorHouse this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-02-27 with Education categories.

This 40th Anniversary Retrospective presents the reminiscences of the directors of Indiana University’s Office of Overseas Study, from its creation in 1972 until the present day. They recount not only how IU faculty and administrators selected partners and locations around the world but also how they established systems at the university to facilitate student access and participation. Integrating such programs into a large public institution of eight campuses posed challenges as well as opportunities. While study abroad today is considered a high impact educational activity that students expect from a college experience, the eight authors show how unique such opportunities were just a few decades ago. Faculty and administrators who are tasked today with designing education abroad programs for students will appreciate and learn from this comprehensive overview of administrative and academic know-how. And those who had similar experiences during the past few decades will commiserate with the trials and tribulations inherent to internationalizing an institution of higher education.
