An evocative memoir about one woman’s journey from privilege to service, heartbreak to laughter. Mary Arden’s story gives an insight into the changes in society that took place with the advent of war. As the Second World War breaks out, Mary’s parents are determined that their daughter’s privileged upbringing should continue, and that life should carry on as much as normal. She is sent to finishing school and becomes a debutante attending ‘coming out’ balls in London, despite the nightly bombing raids. However, Mary is determined to do her bit for the war effort, and volunteers to serve as a Red Cross Nurse, before joining the WRNS. Accepted into the WRNS, not as an officer, but as ‘other rank’, Mary has to learn to live a very different kind of life to the one she was brought up to expect. She is used to being chaperoned, only talking to men she has been ‘introduced’ to, so it’s an almost impossible task for her Senior Wren Officer to find a suitable category for this naive girl. Mary finally becomes part of a new elite category known as Night Vision Testers, training the young pilots to see in the dark so they can land their planes on the deck of their aircraft carrier and not in the sea. As the war progresses, Mary moves from one Naval Air Station to another. Her tasks become stranger than fiction and her duties are definitely outside her job description – and most probably outside the rules too.

Life isn't perfect. Nobody is perfect either but are we brave enough to admit it?Some people know they are fiery and high maintenance (Ruby) some know they are too easy going and likely to be taken for granted (Shauna) whilst some are risking the happiness of others (The Redhead) but they repeat their mistakes, overlook the obvious and carry on.Despite what I've just said, this is a light-hearted and mostly humorous peek into the lives of a collection of overlapping characters. Hopefully it will mostly make you laugh but there are a few twists and turns to surprise you along the way.

'...I told you/ I really like your smile./ And to my surprise/ you gave it to me.' This astonishing debut by Beth Calverley takes the umbrella theme of the smile and shares it out - with great generosity and care - among a multiplicity of subjects, moods and meanings. Smiles can be brave, shy, sad, or a lighthouse beam of joy. They can be a mess of countless other things. This subject seems so appropriate to a poet whose presence, way of reaching out to every member of her audience, and most of all her smile, seem to create smiles all around her. Her leaps of imagination take the breath away. Her use of recurring imagery draws a safety-net of light around her listeners and readers. Some of the smiles that inspired poems in this collection are contributed by people whom Beth has met on her adventures with The Poetry Machine. These poems are worthy of your great attention. We dare you not to smile as you read. 'This is a rich, absorbing, heart-warming collection, sensitive to life's pleasures and pains. Beth Calverley makes us attend differently to ordinary things - a single look can be 'a glass of cold water', a room 'a tangle / of buttery light', a smile 'a too- / tight scrunchy'. We should all smile more, and we should all read more poetry. This collection covers all bases!' - Helen Mort Content Warning Go gently. This collection is home to all kinds of smiles. Many of the poems in the collection look at how smiles adapt to challenging times as well as positive ones. They explore experiences of mental ill-health, physical ill-health, grief, loss and trauma as well as joy and connection. There is a full list of content warnings at the start of the book and Beth will share CWs during the event.

The inspirational story of an American woman who moved mountains to secure medical treatments—and eventually a home—for a young Iraqi girl severely burned in a roadside terror attack. This is a story of the astonishing power of self-sacrificial love. On a typical Sunday morning in 2006, Barbara Marlowe saw a photo that changed her life: a photo of four-year-old Teeba Furat Fadhil, whose face, head, and hands had been severely burned during a roadside bombing in the Diyala Province of Iraq. Teeba’s eyes captivated Barbara, and she yearned to help this child who had already endured more pain and suffering than anyone should bear. Because surgeons were fleeing the war-torn country, Teeba would be unable to receive much-needed treatments if she stayed in Iraq. With powerful faith and determination, Barbara overcame obstacle after obstacle to bring Teeba from Iraq to the United States for medical treatments. A Brave Face explores the connection forged between Barbara and Teeba’s Iraqi mother Dunia over the past decade—a deep bond between two mothers that has flourished despite the distance, the strife of war, and the horrors of Al-Qaeda and ISIS. With chapters written by Teeba, now a young woman, and Dunia, the three women recount the story of courage and sacrifice that bound them together. A Brave Face contains the messages that: Tremendous trust can cross borders and war zones Tragedies can turn into miracles Love can be found in the most unexpected of places In the end, this is a story of hope. A story of building bridges. A story of the always astonishing power of self-sacrificial love.

A Time Best YA Book of All Time (2021) From the “author to watch” (Kirkus Reviews) of The Five Stages of Andrew Brawley comes an “equal parts sarcastic and profound” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review) novel about a teenage boy who must decide whether or not the world is worth saving. Henry Denton has spent years being periodically abducted by aliens. Then the aliens give him an ultimatum: The world will end in 144 days, and all Henry has to do to stop it is push a big red button. Only he isn’t sure he wants to. After all, life hasn’t been great for Henry. His mom is a struggling waitress held together by a thin layer of cigarette smoke. His brother is a jobless dropout who just knocked someone up. His grandmother is slowly losing herself to Alzheimer’s. And Henry is still dealing with the grief of his boyfriend’s suicide last year. Wiping the slate clean sounds like a pretty good choice to him. But Henry is a scientist first, and facing the question thoroughly and logically, he begins to look for pros and cons: in the bully who is his perpetual one-night stand, in the best friend who betrayed him, in the brilliant and mysterious boy who walked into the wrong class. Weighing the pain and the joy that surrounds him, Henry is left with the ultimate choice: push the button and save the planet and everyone on it…or let the world—and his pain—be destroyed forever.

2 Jackie the Brave Faces Darkness is about a puppy who is afraid of the dark. However, he gets adopted into a Christian family, who then, over the course of time, teach him how to pray and trust in God's goodness for his safety and security. Trusting in God's goodness then gives the puppy peace of mind. The puppy's anxieties are calmed, and joy begins to fill his little puppy heart. Jackie the Brave Faces Darkness is the second book in a series of seven children's books. It chronicles the adventures of a small black puppy who learns to trust in God to overcome his fears. In these adventures, Jackie chases cars and is afraid of bugs, the dark, dying, being unloved, and losing his security blanket. These books are both titled and modeled after the author's pets, and they address common fears that everyone faces over the years. They show the pain and healing involved, as well as speculate on some of the reasons behind the fears. The author based these books on her own experiences and used her children's adventures to color them. They provide a biblical way out of fear and give a message of hope. Every book then closes with a Bible verse about God's love and trusting in His protection in order for children to understand that the Lord is always with them.
