This publication is the product of an international effort to develop a novel approach to the comprehensive assessment of national energy systems within a sustainable development context. It represents the first of a series of national studies being conducted through a partnership initiative under the World Summit on Sustainable Development and the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development. The study comprises a quantitative and qualitative analysis of Brazil's energy needs, supply and security; domestic resources; technology development and innovation; and alternative future scenarios taking into consideration sustainable development criteria and goals defined by Brazilian experts. Social, economic and environmental issues and trends are examined in detail using statistical analysis of historical data, integrated demand and supply modeling systems and energy indicators for sustainable development. The quantitative assessment is accompanied by discussions of major institutional and infrastructural considerations. The report summarizes the analyses, identifies major energy priority areas for Brazil and explores policy options useful to decision makers and specialists in energy and the environment.--Publisher's description.

Energy In Brazil written by Antonio Dias Leite and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-09-25 with Business & Economics categories.

Rapidly developing countries such as China and India are the real main players in the climate debate, with the potential for massive increases in their carbon emissions in coming years. Brazil is often included in their number, yet this country is in fact notable for its exceptionally high reliance on energy from renewable sources - approaching 50%. However, the fact that much of this energy comes from hydropower and biofuels, and recent discoveries of massive oil reserves off of the Brazilian coast, are a recipe for controversy. In this detailed account, Antonio Dias Leite sets out the development of Brazil's energy mix. Beginning with the history of energy provision and use, he then moves on to tackle the various sources in detail: hydropower, biomass and other renewables, as well as fossil fuels and nuclear power. In each case he examines growth, distribution, environmental and socio-economic issues (such as deforestation and displacement of indigenous communities) and potential for future development - highlighting what has worked, and what hasn't. The book ends by examining Brazilian approaches to energy efficiency, and by positioning Brazil in the world context. This is a major contribution to the discussion around climate change mitigation that will be key reading for policymakers and researchers concerned with the future role and impacts of rapidly developing countries.

Sustainability Performance Evaluation Of Renewable Energy Sources The Case Of Brazil written by João Fernando Gomes de Oliveira and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-04-05 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This book presents a unique analysis of the sustainability performance of various renewable energy sources, based on Brazilian case studies. The evaluation also covers the potential held by regions with diverse socioeconomic and environmental characteristics and how they affect the development of each source. Considering that energy is essential to sustaining and improving modern society, the answer to the current energy dilemma lies in the development of a system that comprises multiple renewable, reliable, and sustainable energy sources. Brazil, which has a predominantly renewable electricity grid, has the privilege of being home to a range of different sustainable sources, although most of its electricity comes from hydroelectric power plants. With that in mind, this book has the primary objective of developing a performance evaluation system for important renewable sources in Brazil (solar, wind, and hydro), taking into account different scenarios and investor profiles. The analysis is based on the study of sustainability indicators related to the technical, economic, social and environmental aspects of the evaluated energy systems. As the availability of renewable sources is very location-specific, the scope of this book covers two Brazilian States with distinct characteristics. It makes it possible to determine which renewable energy source is most adequate from a sustainability perspective, and in light of the analyzed scope and investor profile.

Industrial Uses Of Biomass Energy written by Frank Rosillo-Calle and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000-09-13 with Science categories.

Industrial Uses of Biomass Energy demonstrates that energy-rich vegetation, biomass, is a key renewable energy resource for the future. Brazil, uniquely, has a recent history of large-scale biomass industrial uses that makes it a specially important test-bed both for the development of biomass technology and its utilisation, and for understanding how this is shaped by political and socio-economic forces. The book analyses the cause for this and the alternatives. It is argued that Brazil's experience with the development for industrial biomass use provides wider lessons and insights in the context of the international movement for sustainable economic development. This book is an interdisciplinary, multi-author work, based upon a recently completed international study by Brazilian and British experts and will prove a valuable reference to all those working in this field.

Climate change is a topic of worIdwide concern. Nevertheless, climate change, not being seen as a priority amongst other issues, has not yet been strongly incorporated into the environmental or economic policy agendas of developing countries. Nevertheless, evidence shows that some of the most adverse effects of climate change will be experienced by developing countries whose populations are the most vulnerable and least likely to be able to adapt to climate change. For instance, although Latín America countries represent only 9 percent of global carbon dioxide emissions, the social and economic impact of those emissions is significantly greater than in developed and emergent countries. This phenomenon is called "double inequity" where the impact of climate change is felt most deeply by poorest societies who are not the main emitters. In this respect, it is important that developing countries, especially South American countries, integrate climate change issues into their decision-making process, where energy policy plays an important role in their development. The main drivers behind contemporary energy policy are.

This book bringing together leading researchers in the field of renewable energy to discuss sustainability on a broad scale and to examine the status quo of renewable energy industry development in a global context. The volume starts with the European Union, then reviews current trends in the United States as well as the Middle East, Central Asia, and Latin America. It moves on to analyze the German transition to one hundred percent renewable energy economy and energy systems (Energiewende) with a climate protection plan and sustainable economic development; and continues on to examine the determinants of the adoption of sustainable solutions in Finland and discuss the renewable energy agenda in the European Union with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals at its core. Climate change has become one of the main global drivers for policy and this book discusses both it’s over all global development as well as spotlighting localized progress across multiple continents. Over one hundred and fifty countries have developing sustainable energy policies, tax incentives, and laws. China remains the leader in renewable energy generation; and countries including the United States, the UK, India, Spain, and Turkey, compete in the Renewable Energy Sector to attract investments. In 2018, global investments in renewables exceeded $200 billion. The state of Bahia in Brazil has been experiencing a surge in wind energy production; and public policy has had a positive effect on that expansion. Kazakhstan is a country with great renewable energy prospects, particularly in wind, hydropower plants, and solar energy. This book is a comprehensive overview and invaluable reference for all those in the renewable energy sector.

Energy Efficiency In Developing Countries written by Suzana Tavares da Silva and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-02-05 with Science categories.

This book presents a comparative analysis of energy efficiency policies in developing countries. Although there is a vast amount of literature available about renewable energy policy and implementation in the developing world, energy efficiency tends to lack attention. This book fills this lacuna by examining the current state of the field and scope for future improvements. Drawing on a wide range of case studies including Brazil, China and Chile, the authors use a comparative approach to examine the policies and programmes being implemented, looking at the existing legal frameworks and regulatory challenges. By showcasing stories of success, as well as barriers to energy efficiency, they highlight the opportunities for increased energy access and efficiency and demonstrate how these opportunities may directly impact on climate change mitigation. This volume will be a useful resource for scholars and practitioners with an interest in energy policy and efficiency, climate change and international development.
