In the English-speaking world, it is generally unknown that a volunteer Brazilian Expeditionary Force (FEB) fought alongside the US Army in Italy from mid-1944 until the end of the war. This was in effect a light infantry division, consisting of three infantry regiments augmented with artillery and light armour. It was supported by a Brazilian Air Force contingent of a light reconnaissance squadron as well as a P-47 Thunderbolt-equipped fighter squadron. Although all weapons, uniform, kit and equipment were either American-supplied or American models, there were distinctive Brazilian adaptations to uniforms and other key pieces of kit. This is a seriously researched volume on a little-studied subject matter complete with a range of previously unpublished photographs and specially commissioned artwork plates.

Author's abstract: Despite declarations of war from several Latin American nations, The Brazilian Expeditionary Force was the only representative from the region to contribute to Allied combat operations on the European continent. The first contingent of men sailed from Rio de Janeiro on July 2, 1944, one year later, after more than two hundred days in continuous contact with enemy forces in northern Italy, the febianos (Footnote 1) returned to Brazil as national heroes. Brazil's wartime alliance with the United States was a calculated risk. Brazilian President/Dictator Getulio Dornelles Vargas and his advisors believed the alliance would guarantee Brazil the economic assistance it needed to industrialize its economy and provide the weapons necessary to transform the weak Brazilian military. The FEB was one of many instruments Vargas utilized to enhance Brazil's international position. As Letícia Pinheiro, a professor at the Institute of International Relations of the Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio) explained, "The FEB was the core of a political project to strengthen the Armed Forces and provide Brazil with a globally prominent position as an ally of the United States." (Footnote 2) Vargas and his Foreign Minister Oswaldo Euclydes de Sousa Aranha were aware of recent Brazilian history. They knew that although Brazil declared war on the central powers in 1917, it did not send troops to Europe. In the 1920s consequently, Brazilian efforts to secure greater international prestige never blossomed; in 1926, a frustrated Brazil withdrew from the League of Nations. Footnote 1: This is the most common nickname for members of the Expeditionary Force. Footnote 2: Carlos Haag, "For whom did the snake smoke? Brazil And The United States During World War Ii And Its Aftermath written by Frank D. McCann and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-08-24 with History categories.

The military alliance between the United States and Brazil played a critical role in the outcome of World War II, and yet it is largely overlooked in historiography of the war. In this definitive account, Frank McCann investigates Brazilian-American military relations from the 1930s through the years after the alliance ended in 1977. The two countries emerge as imbalanced giants with often divergent objectives and expectations. They nevertheless managed to form the Brazilian Expeditionary Force and a fighter squadron that fought in Italy under American command, making Brazil the only Latin American country to commit troops to the war. With the establishment of the US Air Force base in Natal, Northeast Brazil become a vital staging area for air traffic supplying Allied forces in the Middle East and Asian theaters. McCann deftly analyzes newly opened Brazilian archives and declassified American intelligence files to offer a more nuanced account of how this alliance changed the course of World War II, and how the relationship deteriorated in the aftermath of the war.

World War II was a global military conflict that lasted from 1939 to 1945, involving most of the world s nations — including all major powers — organized into two opposing military alliances: the Allies and the Axis. It was the most comprehensive war in history, with more than 100 million troops mobilized. The Battle of Monte Castello marked the presence of the Brazilian Expeditionary Force (FEB) in the conflict. It lasted three months, from November 24, 1944 to February 21, 1945, and is part of the 2nd phase of the Operation to Break the Gothic Line (in the sector of responsibility of the IV Corps of the V US Army), in the Italian Campaign. In the battle simulation, in addition to correcting the flaws mentioned in my study, I will present adaptations in the organization of the Brazilian Expeditionary Force, one of the main ones being that it had been structured as an Army Corps, with two of the three infantry divisions foreseen in the initial agreement for Brazil s entry into the war.

This thesis examines how Brazil participated in World War II shoulder to shoulder with the Allies, and what this participation brought to the South American country. During the 1930s, when the relationship between Brazil and Germany was improving each year, and when it was assumed that Brazil would support Germany in case war broke out, Brazilian leaders convinced their country to support the Allied cause. Brazil's support of the United States allowed the U.S. Military to establish aerial bases in Brazil's Northeast region to facilitate an Allied connection with North Africa. Brazil's decision to send a Brazilian Expeditionary Force (BEF) to fight for Allied Forces in Italy was one of the most important decisions in Brazilian history. It was the first time that Brazil would take part in a war being staged outside South America. The BEF did its best to represent Brazil, and it eventually showed that Brazilian soldiers could fight as well as the best soldiers in the war. Brazilian participation in World War II is almost unheard of in countries outside South America, even in the United States. Nevertheless, this participation was important as it was responsible for several transformations in Brazil's national power. After the war, Brazil became the most powerful and wealthy country in South America. It also became an actor on the global stage. Overall, Brazil's participation in World War II was the event that transformed the country economically, politically, and militarily.

The Brazilian Expeditionary Force consisted of about 25,700 men arranged by the army and air force to fight alongside the Allied forces in the Mediterranean Theatre of World War II. This air-land force consisted of a complete infantry division, a liaison flight, and a fighter squadron.
