HOW A MARATHON INSPIRED A CALL TO PURPOSE On the outside, I was like every other 4-year-old. I had no idea what cancer was, or the real reason my parents had uprooted our family and moved to America. They did it for me, to find a cure before it was too late. So begins a personal journey decades in the making. Author Bishoy Tadros has faced seemingly insurmountable setbacks and impossible odds--from his childhood bout with acute lymphoblastic leukemia to crossing the finish line in Central Park competing in the TCS New York City Marathon. Break Barriers is a story about uncovering your potential, even if you are the underdog. It's about learning to apply the virtues of patience, perspective, and purpose to achieve whatever you dream in life. Bishoy's message is a reminder that your comeback will always be stronger than the original setback.

Some churches grow rapidly, only to hit a ceiling. Other churches have experienced declining or static attendance--many of them for decades. Frustrated pastors and church leaders want growth methods that work, but without adding to pastoral fatigue. How to Break Growth Barriers argues that growth comes when effective leadership and lay-empowerment skills work hand in hand. This requires a shift of focus from the shepherd as the primary caregiver to shepherd as developer and coach of many caregivers. The authors show pastors how to communicate a vision for the future and then how to lead the congregation into the paradigms necessary for potentially limitless growth. The strategies found in this book are not only tried and true, and taken from a biblical perspective of a "harvest" vision. They're also newly updated to reflect our changing culture, including helpful charts and checklists for self-evaluation.

Joyce Verplank Hatton’s life has embraced community and political leadership, entrepreneurial success, love and family, and worldwide sailing adventures. Writing with courage and candor, she shares her life’s journey following a trail from a small harbor town on Lake Michigan to Aspen Colorado, New York City, Washington, D.C., and beyond, while skiing the Rockies and sailing the Caribbean. Hatton’s entrepreneurial drive became evident in 1957 when she developed the first nursery school in Western Michigan, the first child care company to go public in 1970, and the first multi-state computerized USDA child care food program in 1976. Encouraged by a supportive family and a dynamic mentor, Hatton also established herself in media ventures that included FM radio, UHF television, and cable networks. Hatton brought her leadership experience to state and national politics as well: she was a candidate for Michigan’s new State Board of Education in 1964, Republican County Chairman in President Gerald Ford’s Fifth District, and a delegate to the 1968 GOP national convention in Miami. And she logged over a decade of ocean sailing, charting the course with a talented lifelong sailor. In this personal narrative, Hatton hopes to encourage other women to value independent economic status, be entrepreneurial, take risks, and march to their own drum.

This book was written with an open heart. It contains no elaborate linguistic or rhetorical features. The events narrated in it flow without constraints like in a conversation with a good friend. My dreams, struggles, and most importantly my triumphs through the practice of positive thinking are the main topics of this “conversation” with the reader. By putting my story on paper, I aspire to nothing more than to share my life experiences with others who may find then helpful.
