This book covers the subjects of break bulk cargo, general cargo and project cargo, and how these cargoes are shipped. It deals with the cargoes themselves, the vessels used for their carriage, and how the carriage is managed using the process of vessel chartering. Alongside these, it also covers offshore vessel management and how offshore supply vessels are used to carry cargoes to offshore oil and gas installations. Break bulk cargo covers a wide variety of cargoes, from project cargo to more varied cargoes carried on an ad hoc basis, often between ports that are not equipped for container traffic. It also covers the carriage of specific cargoes that cannot fit inside or are unsuitable for containers. This includes the carriage of cargoes for major projects, and cargoes for the offshore sector, which is an area covered in a specific section in the book concerning the use of offshore supply vessels. To date, only minor elements of shipping books cover this kind of trade, hence the need for a new book that specifically covers this subject. The focus of this book is providing expert insights and detailed explanations of the practical issues related to all aspects of break bulk and general cargo management. The book is written for legal practitioners, shipping managers, managers of project cargo, oil and gas companies, shipping professionals, charterers, shipbrokers, shippers and anybody else involved in ad hoc vessel chartering for the carriage of break bulk, general and project cargoes. It will also serve as a valuable resource for students of shipping.

Cargo management, especially in the maritime sphere, plays a vital role in the transfer of goods between seller and buyer. However, despite over 90% of the world’s international trade being conducted by sea, often very little is known about this subject by either party. This unique text provides a clear and comprehensive introduction to the principal elements involved in the management of marine cargo and the carriage of goods by sea. Not only does it analyse key theories and debates in the maritime freight sector, it is equally instructive on practice and logistics. Furthermore, the book provides a thorough guide to the roles and responsibilities of all parties involved in this dynamic industry. This second edition has been fully revised and updated to incorporate the very latest changes in cargo management legislation and procedures, including: Offshore oil & gas supply management The revised INCOTERMS 2010 Tramp shipping and spot cargo trading Project cargo management Dry and liquid bulk cargo management The IMDG Code and the marine carriage of dangerous and hazardous goods Cabotage Salvage Risk management and best practice This is an essential guide for shipping professionals, academics and students of marine logistics, and international trade.

T HIS VOL U M E has been written to describe the business side of a commercial enterprise whose field is the entire civilized world. Historically, the theory and knowledge of shipping management, as distinguished from the practical skills of seaman ship, have been transmitted from one generation to the next by word of mouth. Little has been put on paper, primarily because the finest exponents of the art of steamship management have been too busy with their day-to-day concerns to do so. The "working level" personnel often are superbly competent, but rarely qualify as liter ary craftsmen. It has been my aim, in preparing this analysis of the principles of the "business" of commercial shipping, to describe that which trans pires in the various divisions of a shipowning and operating organi zation. Insofar as possible, the procedures followed in the offices have been described and explained, as well as the underlying prin ciples of management by which their decisions are reached. In the process of learning the principles and practices that are set forth in these pages, I have spent ajoy-filled lifetime in associa tion with ships. It has been my good fortune to work in large and small American steamship offices, to operate a major cargo termi nal, to participate in establishing and putting into effect the policies of a world-girdling American steamship organization, and to teach young men these principles learned from experience as well as from precept.

Changing vessel technology presents a major challenge to shipping management. Vessels cost tens of millions of dollars and have a long physical life. A change in vessel design for a company may also require a change in port facilities, information systems, and marketing techniques. This book, first published in 1987, deals with many of the vessel technology issues that shipping companies have confronted in recent years. Specific technologies are described along with their economic, regulatory and political aspects. Each chapter is in the form of a case study based on an actual management situation where management had to deal with an aspect of changing vessel technology.

Long acknowledged as the most comprehensive and authoritative book in its field, this sixth edition of The Business of Shipping has been completely revised and updated. Describing and analyzing the shipping business as it exists today, the book is intended for executives and others who may be specialists in one branch of the business, but only marginally knowledgeable about its other aspects. It will also familiarize newcomers with the many facets of the shipping enterprise. Although not written as a textbook, it could be used as a basic resource for any marine transportation course. The topics covered include tramp shipping; liner service; the passenger cruise business; shoreside activities, such as terminal operations, ship supply, and bunkering procedures; the actual functioning of many segments of a shipping company organization; and, uniquely, the management of tankers, including chemical carriers and liquefied gas transporters. The book's scope is broader and more attuned to the working of the industry than most other books on marine transportation.
