The incredible story of spaceflight before the establishment of NASA. NASA's history is a familiar story, one that typically peaks with Neil Armstrong taking his small step on the Moon in 1969. But America's space agency wasn't created in a vacuum. It was assembled from pre-existing parts, drawing together some of the best minds the non-Soviet world had to offer. In the 1930s, rockets were all the rage in Germany, the focus both of scientists hoping to fly into space and of the German armed forces, looking to circumvent the restrictions of the Treaty of Versailles. One of the key figures in this period was Wernher von Braun, an engineer who designed the rockets that became the devastating V-2. As the war came to its chaotic conclusion, von Braun escaped from the ruins of Nazi Germany, and was taken to America where he began developing missiles for the US Army. Meanwhile, the US Air Force was looking ahead to a time when men would fly in space, and test pilots like Neil Armstrong were flying cutting-edge, rocket-powered aircraft in the thin upper atmosphere. Breaking the Chains of Gravity tells the story of America's nascent space program, its scientific advances, its personalities and the rivalries it caused between the various arms of the US military. At this point getting a man in space became a national imperative, leading to the creation of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, otherwise known as NASA.

Raised in a Catholic family in the Pacific Northwest, author Robert Willis learned to obey two judges: his father, a county superior court judge, and God. He joined the Jesuits, hoping to please both. The 1960s revolution tested his unthinking obedience to authorities-paternal, religious, and political-as the immorality of the Vietnam War troubled his conscience and the Second Vatican Council challenged his position in the modern world. When his efforts to stop the war led him to Vietnam, he knew he had to break the chains that bound him to the past. Willis's path took him to the nascent human potential movement in California. Experiencing its healing power, he joined Carl Rogers and colleagues at the Center for Studies of the Person in La Jolla while simultaneously pursuing a doctorate in psychology at San Diego's United States International University. In his teaching and practice of psychotherapy, Willis emphasized the crucial importance of the healing relationship. In its depths, he felt the presence of the Spirit of God. In his personal life, together with a woman who touches his soul, he meets the God of love. The chains, at last, lie broken.

What if the only man who can put out the fires stalking you is the one whose touch sets you free? When Alina Cortez escapes a desert commune, she swears she’ll never kneel again. Sierra del Sol should be a fresh start—until a string of ritual-like blazes and a whispering network of “forgiveness” notes pull the past to her door. Enter Rhys Mercer, a city firefighter with a rescuer’s command and scars he doesn’t show. He runs Emberline, a quiet lifeline for survivors—with one rule above all: consent isn’t a suggestion; it’s the plan. Their chemistry is incendiary, but this is a love story built on negotiation, a safeword spoken out loud, and aftercare that feels like absolution. As smoke curls through alleys and a gilded prophet tightens his grip, Alina and Rhys stitch a rulebook strong enough to hold desire and dangerous enough to challenge a criminal faith. Together they’ll navigate heat that heals, a city that burns for justice, and the choice to tie—not chain—themselves to something real. For readers who crave sun-baked grit, midnight tenderness, and a fiercely consensual dark romance with crime-and-cult stakes. Categories: Dark Romance; Romantic Suspense; Crime Thriller; Psychological Thriller; Women’s Fiction (Contemporary) This book contains explicit scenes, violence, and morally grey characters. Reader discretion is advised.

Guerrilla Science written by Ernesto Altshuler and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-03-16 with Science categories.
Full of drama, dedication, and humor, this book narrates the author’s often frustrating experiences working as an experimental physicist in Cuba after the disintegration of the so-called socialist block. Lacking finance and infrastructure, faced with makeshift equipment, unpredictable supplies, and unreliable IT, Altshuler tells how he and his students overcame numerous challenges to make novel and interesting contributions to several fields of science. Along the way, he explains the science - from studies of ant colonies to superconductivity - either qualitatively or quantitatively, but always at a level fully understandable to an undergraduate student of natural sciences or engineering. An even wider audience, however, may skip the technical sections without missing the essence. With numerous anecdotes, photographs and the author’s own delightful cartoons, the book tells a remarkable, and often amusing story of how successful science can be performed against all odds.
