In August 2018, UNSW Arts and Social Sciences, Women's Legal Service NSW and the National Centre for Indigenous Excellence sponsored and hosted a unique forum of 42 Aboriginal, Torres Strait and Pacific Islander women intended to 'Break Silent Codes' and share stories of cultural and spiritual responses to the issue of sexual assault and family violence in communities across Australia and the Pacific. The forum provided a platform for women to discuss the ways in which community, religion, authority and family create silences around sexual assault and family violence. There are many injustices experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait and Pacific Islander communities. For a long time, it has seemed that all other matters of injustice are more important than the sexual assault and domestic violence in communities. Women experience this as a silencing of issues important to their spiritual and physical well being. Through this book, we share with you the stories of this gathering which has now become a movement of its own for First Nations women across Australia and the Pacific.

Former Minneapolis police chief and New York commander and officer Tony Bouza describes his role as an expert witness in fifty-nine cases. He brings to light the maze of "testilying", the Blue Code of Silence, cover-ups, evasions, and the tightly-closed police world that harms the criminal justice system. Bouza demonstrates that the American justice system can be navigated successfully, but the police force must be made accountable for the system to work more effectively.

A deeply personal yet universal work, Signifying Pain applies the principles of therapeutic writing to such painful life experiences as mental illness, suicide, racism, domestic abuse, and even genocide. Probing deep into the bedrock of literary imagination, Judith Harris traces the odyssey of a diverse group of writers—John Keats, Derek Walcott, Jane Kenyon, Michael S. Harper, Robert Lowell, and Ai, as well as student writers—who have used their writing to work through and past such personal traumas. Drawing on her own experience as a poet and teacher, Harris shows how the process can be long and arduous, but that when exercised within the spirit of one's own personal compassion, the results can be limitless. Signifying Pain will be of interest not only to teachers of creative and therapeutic writing, but also to those with a critical interest in autobiographical or confessional writing more generally.

"This book tells the hidden story of women during the missionization of California. It shows what it was like for women to live and work on that frontier - and how race, religion, age, and ethnicity shaped female experiences. It explores the suppression of women's experiences and cultural resistance to domination, and reveals the many codes of silence regarding the use of force at the missions, the treatment of women, indigenous ceremonies, sexuality, and dreams."--BOOK JACKET.

The torture ring that operated out of Chicago Police Department Area 2 and 3 headquarters for more than two decades is one of the most terrible and harrowing stories of injustice to take place in my lifetime. Journalists, lawyers and activists played their part in exposing this nightmare, but the victims of police torture themselves did the most to make the truth known, and against steep odds, they were heard. Jon Burge may have never seen the inside of a jail cell like he should have, but thanks in large part to Stanley Howard and the other authors of this book, he will never be remembered as anything other than a monstrous criminal. This book tells the story of police torture in Chicago from the inside—literally—and when you read it, you’ll agree that no one has done a better job of telling all of it. Nothing can ever make up for the injustices these men suffered. But if we can stop this state-sponsored crime from ever happening again, we will have Stanley, Mark, Marvin and Ronnie to thank for it. — Alan Maass, author, The Case for Socialism; editor, SocialistWorker.org Tortured by Blue is not a story about individual survival in the face of horrific circumstances. It is a story about the multitude of individuals (police, prosecutors, judges, elected officials to name a few), practices, and systems that looked the other way and knowingly ALLOWED for the police torture of men and women in Chicago to continue on for decades. With the turn of each page, my rage grew, and with it a commitment to making sure the truths Stanley Howard, Mark Clements, Marvin Reeves and Ronald Kitchen lifts up in their writings are shared widely and result in accountability and substantive change so no individual or family has to go through what the police torture survivors had to experience. —Cindy Eigler, director of policy and strategic initiatives, Chicago Torture Justice Center Swept under the rug for too long, the wrongful convictions and police abuses described in [Torture by Blue] are a very real part of the history of the city of Chicago. Studying that history is crucial to avoiding the mistakes of the past, and [the author’s] deserves considerable credit from pulling it all together. Well -researched and comprehensive in scope, [the author’s] book doses an excellent job of telling this important story. —Jon Lovey, civil rights attorney specializing in police misconduct

Our parents are our most unexplored mystery. Whether close or distant to us, we see them as "parent," rarely knowing or thinking about the person that they are outside that role. So few of us get to discover that person inside, even if it may be just a question away. Like many, Karen grew up with a father who was always there and yet always absent. As a little girl and then an adult, she talked to him, but they never really had a conversation. He'd told her stories of his childhood and of his time in the Navy, but she'd barely listened. But on his 81st birthday, without explanation, her father placed two weathered notebooks on her lap, with more than 400 pages of letters he'd written to his parents during World War II. The more she read, the more she discovered about the man she never knew and the secret role he played in the war. Thus began an unintended journey one taken by a father and daughter who thought they knew each other, a journey of healing and discovery that started with a leap of faith.

The outlaws of the Wild West were a breed apart. They lived outside the law, on the run from bounty hunters and posses. They were feared and mistrusted by the townspeople, but they also had a certain mystique about them. In this book, we'll take a look at the world of the outlaws. We'll learn about their code of honor, their methods of operation, and their impact on American culture. We'll also meet some of the most famous outlaws of the era, including Billy the Kid, Jesse James, and Butch Cassidy. The outlaws of the Wild West were a fascinating and complex group of people. They were criminals, to be sure, but they were also products of their time. They lived in a harsh and unforgiving world, and they had to do whatever it took to survive. Some people romanticize the outlaw life, but the reality was often much different. Outlaws lived in constant fear of being hunted down and killed. They had to be constantly on the move, and they could never trust anyone. Despite the dangers, many outlaws chose to live this way. They were drawn to the freedom and excitement of the outlaw life. They believed in their own code of justice, and they were willing to fight for what they believed in. The outlaws of the Wild West were a part of American history. They played a role in the settlement of the West, and they helped to shape the American character. Their story is a reminder of the human capacity for both good and evil. In this book, we'll explore the world of the outlaws from a variety of perspectives. We'll hear from historians, experts, and even some of the outlaws themselves. We'll learn about their motivations, their methods, and their impact on American culture. We hope that this book will give you a new understanding of the outlaws of the Wild West. They were a complex and fascinating group of people, and their story is still relevant today. If you like this book, write a review!
