While ancient civilizations worshipped strong, active emotions, modern societies have favored more peaceful attitudes, especially within the democratic process. We have largely forgotten the struggle to make use of thymos, the part of the soul that, following Plato, contains spirit, pride, and indignation. Rather, Christianity and psychoanalysis have promoted mutual understanding to overcome conflict. Het leek of we konden steunen op imposante filosofieën van de tijd, van Aristoteles, Augustinus en Hegel. Maar Martin Heidegger liet zien dat de wending van de tijd naar het zijn nergens gestalte had gekregen. Over tijd werd niet gedacht, de tijd werd overgeslagen: het verleden was onachterhaalbaar voorbij, de toekomst ongewis en nog niet. En het heden niet of nauwelijks, bij het aanbreken alweer verloren en verdwenen. De tijd ging aan het zijn voorbij, was een aflopende zaak, gaf geen grond om ons bestaan staande te houden maar was de afgrond waarin alles verdwijnt. Maar het nu – het ogenblik – is niet niets en mettertijd verdwenen. Zonder de herinnering aan iets, de herhaling van iets en het achteraf denken aan iets ben je niet, ben je niets. Het nu is geen noot die even in de stilte klinkt en meteen weer verdwijnt, maar iets wat in zinvolle samenhang pas bestaat door de melodie, stemming en samenklank waarin het opgenomen is. In ‘De kleine tijd’ probeert filosoof Charles Vergeer – anders dan Kant – de tijd niet als voorstelling maar als aanwezigheid te grijpen en te begrijpen. Tijd gaat wel voorbij maar verdwijnt niet. Juist de herinnering en de herhaling geven gestalte aan de tijd, het ondoorgrondelijke. Juist door het tekort, het ontbreken, dringt de tijd zich op en dient hij zich aan.
