Un viaggio appassionante alla scoperta dell’epoca di mezzo Nessuno degli uomini o delle donne vissuti tra i secoli V e XV ebbe mai la consapevolezza di vivere nel Medioevo. L’idea di “età di mezzo” nacque per identificare un periodo di sospensione e di separazione tra il mondo classico e il mondo rinascimentale. Sin dall’origine della definizione, il Medioevo acquisì dunque una sua fisionomia non tanto grazie ai caratteri che lo contraddistinguevano, quanto in base a quelli che gli mancavano. Quasi come reazione a queste posizioni, nei secoli seguenti si sviluppò invece il mito di un Medioevo ricco di fascino e mistero, culla di molte delle istituzioni per come le conosciamo oggi. Questo libro è un viaggio alla scoperta di un’epoca fondamentale e complessa, che ha contribuito a delineare la fisionomia culturale e politica d’Europa. Während einige Aufsätze sich auf theoretische, methodologische Probleme konzentrieren, beschäftigen sich die meisten Beiträge mit jeweils einem Land oder einer Region, wo eine faschistische Bewegung oder ein solches Regime zwischen den Kriegen und während des Zweiten Weltkriegs erfolgreich war, und wo es gleichzeitig eine signifikante katholische Präsenz in der Gesellschaft gab. Fast ganz Europa wird behandelt – ein beispielloses Unternehmen - , und eine große Zahl wichtiger Kontexte und Methoden wird untersucht. So wirken die Beiträge mit an der allgemeinen Entwicklung eines interpretativen ‚Cluster‘-Modells, das eine Reihe von Grundmustern der Forschung vereinigt und zukünftige Untersuchungen anregen wird. The papers presented in this volume analyse the many ways in which the Vatican, national Churches and individual catholics dealt with the rise of the extreme right in Europe throughout the 1920s, 1930s and early 1940s, from the end of the First World War, arguably one of the main catalysts of European interwar fascism, to the conclusion and immediate aftermath of the Second World War. While a number of papers focus primarily on theoretical, methodological issues pertaining to the book’s general theme, the majority of papers focus on either a country or region where a fascist movement or regime flourished between the wars and during the Second World War, and where there was a significant catholic presence in society. The various chapters cover almost the entire European continent – an endeavour that is unprecedented –, and they explore a wide range of relevant contexts and methodologies, thus further contributing to the general development of an interpretive ‘cluster’ model that incorporates a series of investigative matrixes, and that will hopefully inspire future research.

Il volume raccoglie gli atti del convegno internazionale La storia del cattolicesimo contemporaneo e le memorie del cinema e dell’audiovisivo organizzato dal Centro di ricerca Catholicism and Audiovisual Studies (CAST) dell’Università Telematica Internazionale UniNettuno. I diversi contributi mirano a realizzare un primo stato dell’arte sulle fonti audiovisive e le pratiche di ricerca per lo studio della storia del cattolicesimo contemporaneo: da un lato emergono le riflessioni delle istituzioni che conservano materiale audiovisivo afferente a realtà cattoliche e di enti ecclesiastici che consentono di mappare l’esistente e procedere a un raffronto teorico e tecnico sulle pratiche d’archivio e sulle frontiere aperte dalla svolta digitale; dall’altro viene sollecitato un dibattito ampio e interdisciplinare attorno alla funzione storiografica delle immagini in movimento e dell’audiovisivo per lo studio del cattolicesimo. The French Revolution nearly destroyed the Vincentians in France, and those in most other countries were isolated, persecuted in every degree from niggling regulations to imprisonment and martyrdom, and sometimes squeezed into oblivion. To these external miseries were added painful internal schisms: the Italians, abetted by other countries and the Holy See, pushed to center the Congregation in Rome; interdicts against communication with foreign superiors forced provinces in many countries to act autonomously; national pressures to swear loyalty and conform to compromising regulations created splits within the community and threatened to divide the Daughters and separate them from their brothers. Reduced membership and funding crippled the Vincentians’ efforts as they emerged from the worst of the state obstructions. Nevertheless, they began rebuilding and even made struggling beginnings in overseas missions, notably the United States, Brazil, the Ottoman Empire, the Middle East, and China, where the martyrdom of two missionaries galvanized interest in this distant and challenging mission.
