Excerpt from Bridges a Study in Their Art, Science and Evolution The purpose of this book is threefold. First: to give a method for the application of funda mental architectural principles to the design and criticism of bridges; to point out that the modern bridge should not, as is sometimes stated, be exempted from the same rules of art that apply to other architectural works; and to make a plea for thorough architectural train ing of the Civil Engineer that his tremendously important works may be as inspiringly beau tiful as they are economically sound. Second: to present the historical background of the Modern Bridge, showing how bridge building developed from the earliest time to the present day; how it has been influenced by social, political, and economic conditions; and picturing the most beautiful and interesting bridges of each period. Third: to present a selection of photographs of artistic bridges of all types; which it is hoped will not only interest the layman but will furnish valuable inspiration to engineers and architects who are engaged in designing bridges. Not all of the designs pictured are to be considered as perfect, but they all have enough artistic merit to make their study worth while, and they show how their designers have solved the special problems involved. From the earliest times when bridges were just logs or stepping stones placed across streams or small gullies, to the modern era with its complicated, highly engineered structures of stone, concrete and steel, bridge building has evolved into a sophisticated marriage of architecture and engineering--an aesthetically pleasing blend of art and science. This illustrated study explores that evolution by examining the principles of bridge design and construction from the times of the Romans to the first decades of the twentieth century.

In its modern usage, the term "consilience" was first established by Edward O. Wilson in his 1998 book, Consilience: The Unity of Knowledge. Wilson's original thesis contained two parts: that nature forms a unitary order of causal forces, hierarchically organized, and that scientific knowledge, because it delineates nature, also forms a unitary order, promising consensus among diverse fields. Bringing together cutting-edge scientists and scholars across this range, Darwin's Bridge gives an expert account of consilience and makes it possible to see how far we have come toward unifying knowledge about the human species, what major issues are still in contention, and which areas of research are likely to produce further progress. Readers will be delighted as they, along with the work's contributing authors, explore the deeper meaning of consilience and consider the harmony of human evolution, human nature, social dynamics, art, and narrative.

Historic Highway Bridges Of Michigan written by Charles K. Hyde and has been published by Wayne State University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1993 with Bridges categories.

Michigan's historic highway bridges are rapidly being torn down and replaced as they deteriorate or become unable to support increased traffic volumes and loads. While the state has the responsibility of providing safe bridges, historian Charles K. Hyde maintains that the state must also preserve many of these remaining historic structures to insure that future generations will have them to view and appreciate. In Historic Highway Bridges of Michigan, Hyde identifies Michigan's historically significant highway bridges within the broader contexts of American bridge design and construction in the 19th and 20th centuries. The book summarizes the improvement of highway bridge design in the United States and compares Michigan's experiences with national trends. To aid the reader interested in visiting the historic highway bridges of Michigan, regional maps show the location of bridges included in the text.
