This volume examines positive development across adulthood with particular emphasis on postformal thought. The editors acknowledge that researchers have compiled a substantial body of descriptive evidence about the styles of thinking used by adults under certain conditions. The questions that remain are whether these styles reflect qualitative changes; how these styles develop; whether there are necessary precursors; why there is content specificity; what the relationship is to physiological or neurological development; whether adults can deliberately control postformal thought; how postformal thought develops in different cultures; what key developmental experiences, if any, are needed for postformal thought to develop; and what postformal thought means in a practical sense. These questions are addressed by the research and theory discussed in this volume. The contributors reflect a diversity of backgrounds assumptions, disciplines, and methods. This book is the first of its kind to provide an integrative look at World Englishes, (second) language acquisition, and sociolinguistics in a variety of contexts of English around the globe with a focus on the language of children and adolescents. It thus aims to bridge the paradigm gaps that have been identified between these approaches but have rarely been explored in greater detail. The range of topics includes the areas of first and second language acquisition; sociolinguistic variation and awareness; language use and choice; family language policies; language attitudes and perception; modelling children’s and adolescents’ language in World Englishes; the role of child language acquisition in processes of language change; as well as methodologies of eliciting speech and writing from children and adolescents. The book combines qualitative and quantitative approaches and draws on psycholinguistic, corpus-linguistic, and ethnographic methodologies. What unites the contributions to the volume is that they all address the theoretical implications that a joint approach between World Englishes, sociolinguistics, and language acquisition has, i.e. why it is fruitful and how it can contribute to a deeper understanding of the different research paradigms.

The nervous system is the product of biological evolution and is shaped by the interplay between extrinsic factors determining the ecology of animals, and by intrinsic processes that dictate the developmental rules that give rise to adult functional structures. This special topic is oriented to develop an integrative view from behavior and ecology to neurodevelopmental processes. We address questions such as how do sensory systems evolve according to ecological conditions? How do neural networks organize to generate adaptive behavior? How does cognition and brain connectivity evolve? What are the developmental mechanisms that give rise to functional adaptation? Accordingly, the book is divided in three sections, (i) Evolution of sensorimotor systems; (ii) Cognitive computations and neural circuits, and (iii) Development and brain evolution. Having a non-human agent as a companion has been a longstanding fantasy in human history. Two paradigms, uncanny valley of mind (UVM) and computer as social actor (CASA), provide explanations and directions of human responses towards agent taking social roles and displaying social capacities. According to CASA, individuals mindlessly apply social rules in their interactions with technological artifacts that demonstrate sufficient social cues, which further facilitates effective human-agent interaction (Nass & Moon, 2000). However, the uncanny valley of mind hypothesis suggests that human acceptance of agents possessing social capacities and humanlike characteristics does not occur naturally and smoothly. Having non-human agent display social qualities, especially for mental capacities, may trigger emotional reactance in humans (Mori et al., 2012). Grounded in the human-centered standpoint, this dissertation proposes a motivated cognition approach to bridge the current paradigm gap between CASA and the uncanny valley by emphasizing the "active role" of humans in interactions with social technologies. In particular, this study hypothesized that by eliciting social relational mindsets in humans, individuals are cognitively prepared to perceive mental capacities in non-human agents, which further increased the acceptance and evaluation of the received empathetic support from the support agent. Results supported the positive effect of social relational mindsets on the evaluation of supportive interaction. However, neither CASA nor uncanny valley of mind propositions were supported in the context of human-agent supportive interaction.
