This book addresses critical issues related to pre-adolescent and adolescent literacy learners with a focus on closing the achievement gap. Despite efforts by educators and policymakers during the past several decades, certain groups of students--primarily African American students, English language learners, and students from low-income homes--continue to underperform on commonly used measures of academic achievement. Too often, teachers and administrators lack both proper preparation and good ideas to confront these issues.

The Workshop on the Role of Language in School Learning: Implications for Closing the Achievement Gap was held to explore three questions: What is known about the conditions that affect language development? What are the effects of early language development on school achievement? What instructional approaches help students meet school demands for language and reading comprehension? Of particular interest was the degree to which group differences in school achievement might be attributed to language differences, and whether language-related instruction might help to close gaps in achievement by helping students cope with language-intensive subject matter especially after the 3rd grade. The workshop provided a forum for researchers and practitioners to review and discuss relevant research findings from varied perspectives. The disciplines and professions represented included: language development, child development, cognitive psychology, linguistics, reading, educationally disadvantaged student populations, literacy in content areas (math, science, social studies), and teacher education. The aim of the meeting was not to reach consensus or provide recommendations, but rather to offer expert insight into the issues that surround the study of language, academic learning, and achievement gaps, and to gather varied viewpoints on what available research findings might imply for future research and practice. This book summarizes and synthesizes two days of workshop presentations and discussion.

Research shows that most English language learning (ELL) students score below their peers academically and more often struggle socially and emotionally. Education laws require that all students receive an equal and high-quality education, and yet data shows that outcomes are far from equal. The school library has a unique place within the school and can provide opportunities for ELL students in closing the achievement gap and social and emotional acceptance. The school library can impact ELLs in three specific areas: access to appropriate materials, research-based instruction, and highly qualified and trained educators. The result of this project is a professional development training that works to inform teachers of the resources and opportunities available for ELL students and their teachers from the school library. Understanding of the inequities faced by ELL students and how the school library can be a part of the solution can inspire teachers to use available resources. This dedication to student success can help to close the achievement gap.

The purposes of this exploratory survey research are: (1) to examine the degree to which best practices on language acquisition instructional strategies and resources are used across the ten schools in Monroe County School District (MCSD), (2) to understand the relationship teachers' preparation and background characteristics and language acquisition instructional strategies and resources, and (3) to investigate how the use of effective strategies and resources are associated with academic achievement and achievement growth of English Learners in MCSD. Closing the achievement gap between English Learners and their White native English-speaking peers has been a priority for the Monroe County School District (MCSD). Although instructional quality is critical for achievement of English Learners, little is known about what language acquisition instructional strategies and resources have been used by teachers of English Learners across ten schools in MCSD. Based on a districtwide survey of 169 teachers across 10 schools, I found that Hispanic teachers are significantly more likely to use effective instructional strategies and resources to assist English Learners. The study also found that teachers were more likely to use the effective instructional strategies and resources if they have attended an AVID, ELLevation, and WIDA professional development opportunity. Another significant finding is that secondary teachers are less likely than elementary teachers to use effective instructional strategies and resources. Recommendations and findings were shared with the Monroe County School District leadership team.

This research realizes English Language Learners (ELLs) as a growing sector of the U.S. education system. Research also documents literature which found teachers not prepared to teach this growing ELL population. This study shows the existence of an academic achievement gap in English Language Arts which persists and thrives between the ELL school population and their English Only or White peers. Educational organizations continually strive to close the gaps, yet literature explains that after decades of attempts, the gap remains. This study questions the continuous underachievement of the ELLs and demonstrates the possible positive effects on student achievement when teachers receive professional development geared toward teaching the ELLs

By now it’s a given: if we’re to help our ELLs and SELs access the rigorous demands of today’s content standards, we must cultivate the “code” that drives school success: academic language. Look no further for assistance than this much-anticipated series from Ivannia Soto, in which she invites field authorities Jeff Zwiers, David and Yvonne Freeman, Margarita Calderon, and Noma LeMoine to share every teacher’s need-to-know strategies on the four essential components of academic language. The subject of this volume is culture. Here, Noma LeMoine makes clear once and for all how culturally and linguistically responsive pedagogy validates, facilitates, liberates, and empowers ethnically diverse students. With this volume as your roadmap, you’ll learn how to: Implement instructional strategies designed to meet the linguistic and cultural needs of ELLs and SELs Use language variation as an asset in the classroom Recognize and honor prior knowledge, home languages, and cultures The culture and language every student brings to the classroom have vast implications for how to best structure the learning environment. This guidebook will help you get started as early as tomorrow. Better yet, read all four volumes in the series as an all-in-one instructional plan for closing the achievement gap.
