To achieve alignment between business and IT has become a daunting task for organizations due to rapid changes in business environment and lack of IT support. Organizations usually strive to bridge the gap by implementing business and IT strategies (i.e. top-down planning) and tend to ignore other aspects of the co-evolution. The co-evolution between business and IT is not restricted to a level but it occurs at all levels and therefore, it is necessary to understand and study co-evolution at all levels within organizations. This book presents a co-evolutionary framework that helps to study and understand the co-evolution at three levels i.e. strategic level, operational level and individual level in an integrated fashion. The three levels need to co-evolve so that all components at each level co-evolve. This framework will speed up the alignment in organizations. A K-mediator (i.e. knowledge mediator) has been used in the proposed co-evolutionary framework that facilitates the co-evolution at each level. Finally the book presents a case study in financial domain in order to evaluate and validated the framework.

Information technology is used by businesses to help with process improvement in an effort to drive business initiatives. To support these business initiatives, information technology is challenged with the task of making user interaction seamless for frontline users. Despite information technology efforts, a huge gap still exists between business initiatives for process improvement efforts through data technologies and frontline users. This gap analysis will reflect the needed improvements to closing and or eliminating the disparity between the two. Reasons for the gap between business initiatives and frontline users include user hesitance, vendor limitations, limitations of existing software merging together, and hosting updates for security purposes hindering the process of learning and using new or updated software. Understanding information technology’s approach towards internal departments, coupled with a full understanding of users’ business needs, will provide insight for implementation steps with minimal user hesitance. Proper implementation is imperative for future growth endeavors.

Governments have done much to leverage information technology to deploy e-government services, but much work remains before the vision of e-government can be fully realized. Information Technology Research, Innovation, and E-government examines the emerging visions for e-government, the technologies required to implement them, and approaches that can be taken to accelerate innovation and the transition of innovative information technologies from the laboratory to operational government systems. In many cases, government can follow the private sector in designing and implementing IT-based services. But there are a number of areas where government requirements differ from those in the commercial world, and in these areas government will need to act on its role as a "demand leader." Although researchers and government agencies may appear to by unlikely allies in this endeavor, both groups have a shared interest in innovation and meeting future needs. E-government innovation will require addressing a broad array of issues, including organization and policy as well as engineering practice and technology research and development, and each of these issues is considered in the book.
