The socio-technical gap is the great divide between social activities such as coordination which researchers and practitioners aim to support and those that are actually supported by technology. As the social interaction takes place through technology, it is changed and mediated by the technology. This gap between the two dimensions is being challenged by new and innovative approaches such as cognitive ergonomics and Web 2.0/3.0. Research in Decision Making (DM) theory and Decision Support Systems (DSS) shows that this gap is due in part to technical limitations and in part to the complexity of the contexts where decision support must be provided. Thus, DSS researchers face important questions concerned with the encapsulation of complex social aspects of managerial decision making, as well as with the representation of key human cognitive mechanisms, such as intuition and insight, within computational systems. This book presents the latest innovations and advances in decision support theory and practice with a special focus on bridging the socio-technical gap. These achievements will be of interest to all those involved in decision making activities and research. The book covers a wide range of topics including: Understanding DM, Design of DSS, Web 2.0 Systems in Decision Support, Business Intelligence and Data Warehousing, Applications of Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis, Intelligent DM, Context in DM, Knowledge Management, ERP Systems, Decision Support for Policy Making, Decision Making in Emergency Scenarios, Decision Support in Commerce, and Decision Support for Production Planning.

The field of Information Systems has been shifting from an aeimmersion viewAE, which relies on the immersion of information technology (IT) as part of the business environment, to a aefusion viewAE in which IT is fused within the business environment, forming a unified fabric that integrates work and personal life, as well as personal and public information. In the context of this fusion view, decision support systems should achieve a total alignment with the context and the personal preferences of users. The advantage of such a view is an opportunity of seamless integration between enterprise environments and decision support system components. Thus, researchers and practitioners have to address the challenges of dealing with this shift in viewpoint and its consequences for decision making and decision support systems theories and applications. This book presents the latest innovations and advances in decision support systems with a special focus on the fusion view. These achievements will be of interest to all those involved and interested in decision making practice and research, as well as, more generally, in the fusion view of modern information systems. The book covers a wide range of topical themes including a fusion view of business intelligence and data warehousing, applications of multi-criteria decision analysis, intelligent models and technologies for decision making, knowledge management, decision support approaches and models for emergency management, and medical and other specific domains.

All business organizations strive for increasing their growth by seizing new opportunities, reducing enterprise costs, attracting new customers and retaining old customers. In doing so, business intelligence and analytics allow business organizations to make better plans, informed decisions, and monitor their progress towards planned goals and objectives. The more disruptive power of IT technologies comes synergistically. Individual IT technologies do not work in isolation. Business intelligence systems are built on other digital technologies, such as mobile and collaborative technologies, cloud computing, virtualization, and enterprise resource planning and enterprise information systems. This volume presents sixteen of the most insightful research papers amongst the various contributions accepted for presentations at the International Conference on Information Systems and Technologies (ICIST 2013) and the International Conference on Software Engineering and New Technologies (ICSENT’12), held in Tangier, Morocco, and Hammamet, Tunisia respectively. These papers truly represent what today’s CIOs see as the top-priority disruptive IT technologies that will help business organizations seize digital opportunities to increase their growth and reduce operating costs.
