Excerpt from Brief History of Modern Europe, From 1814 to the Great War, Vol. 1 Is Egypt in Europe or in Asia? Why do such a patriotic people as the Russians cling to an alien religion, that of the Greek Church? Where and what is Poland? Before the Great War sent us to our maps and our books of history, questions such as these were by no means uncommon, even in highly respectable society; for up to that time we were more interested in the towns, cities, and regions of our own country than in those of Europe. Now, however, we have opened our eyes and see that to take an interest in the nations of Europe is really quite worth while. Whether we like it or not, we must live on terms of relationship with our neighbors, even though large bodies of water separate us from them. So, though possibly late in the day, we have come to study the ways of other nations with a view to understanding the characters and conditions of the people who compose them. Excerpt from A Short: History of Modern Europe From the French Revolution, to the Great War This Short volume has been designed to serve as an introduction to the study of recent European History. Stress is laid throughout upon the main currents of political development, in order that the story of Europe since 1789 may present itself as an intelligible and harmonious Whole. For this purpose _the chronological method of treatment has been to a certain extent abandoned, and no attempt has been made to trace the separate development of each state, events being viewed-except in the last chapter - from a European and not from a sectional standpoint. Nor does this book make any pre tensions to serve as a compendium of information. Much that has hitherto figured prominently in his torical textbooks is omitted; attention has been confined almost entirely to those facts which best illustrate the progress of the main factors in the history of Europe from the French Revolution to the outbreak of the Great War in 1914. Europe was forged out of the ashes of the Napoleonic wars by means of a collective fight against revolutionary terror. The Allied Council created a culture of in- and exclusion, of people that were persecuted and those who were protected, using secret police, black lists, border controls and fortifications, and financed by European capital holders.

WITH A NEW FOREWORD BY TIMOTHY GARTON-ASH A magisterial and acclaimed history of post-war Europe, from Germany to Poland, from Western Europe to Eastern Europe, selected as one of New York Times Ten Best Books of the Year Europe in 1945 was drained. Much of the continent was devastated by war, mass slaughter, bombing and chaos. Large areas of Eastern Europe were falling under Soviet control, exchanging one despotism for another. Today, the Soviet Union is no more and the democracies of the European Union reach as far as the borders of Russia itself. Postwar tells the rich and complex story of how we got from there to here, demystifying Europe's recent history and identity, of what the continent is and has been. ‘It is hard to imagine how a better - and more readable - history of the emergence of today's Europe from the ashes of 1945 could ever be written...All in all, a real masterpiece’ Ian Kershaw, author of Hitler ‘[Judt] dares to expound the sum total of Europe since 1945 in a seamless narrative... This is history-writing with a human face, as well as with brainpower’ Norman Davies, Guardian ‘Brilliant... Judt has written the standard reference work on European post-war history. It will provoke fruitful debate, but I find it hard to imagine that it will ever be surpassed.’ Misha Glenny, Irish Times

American Military History Volume 1 written by Army Center of Military History and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-06-05 with History categories.

American Military History provides the United States Army-in particular, its young officers, NCOs, and cadets-with a comprehensive but brief account of its past. The Center of Military History first published this work in 1956 as a textbook for senior ROTC courses. Since then it has gone through a number of updates and revisions, but the primary intent has remained the same. Support for military history education has always been a principal mission of the Center, and this new edition of an invaluable history furthers that purpose. The history of an active organization tends to expand rapidly as the organization grows larger and more complex. The period since the Vietnam War, at which point the most recent edition ended, has been a significant one for the Army, a busy period of expanding roles and missions and of fundamental organizational changes. In particular, the explosion of missions and deployments since 11 September 2001 has necessitated the creation of additional, open-ended chapters in the story of the U.S. Army in action. This first volume covers the Army's history from its birth in 1775 to the eve of World War I. By 1917, the United States was already a world power. The Army had sent large expeditionary forces beyond the American hemisphere, and at the beginning of the new century Secretary of War Elihu Root had proposed changes and reforms that within a generation would shape the Army of the future. But world war-global war-was still to come. The second volume of this new edition will take up that story and extend it into the twenty-first century and the early years of the war on terrorism and includes an analysis of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq up to January 2009.

Madman, tyrant, animal—history has given Adolf Hitler many names. In Mein Kampf (My Struggle), often called the Nazi bible, Hitler describes his life, frustrations, ideals, and dreams. Born to an impoverished couple in a small town in Austria, the young Adolf grew up with the fervent desire to become a painter. The death of his parents and outright rejection from art schools in Vienna forced him into underpaid work as a laborer. During the First World War, Hitler served in the infantry and was decorated for bravery. After the war, he became actively involved with socialist political groups and quickly rose to power, establishing himself as Chairman of the National Socialist German Worker's party. In 1924, Hitler led a coalition of nationalist groups in a bid to overthrow the Bavarian government in Munich. The infamous Munich "Beer-hall putsch" was unsuccessful, and Hitler was arrested. During the nine months he was in prison, an embittered and frustrated Hitler dictated a personal manifesto to his loyal follower Rudolph Hess. He vented his sentiments against communism and the Jewish people in this document, which was to become Mein Kampf, the controversial book that is seen as the blue-print for Hitler's political and military campaign. In Mein Kampf, Hitler describes his strategy for rebuilding Germany and conquering Europe. It is a glimpse into the mind of a man who destabilized world peace and pursued the genocide now known as the Holocaust.
