Excerpt from Brief Introduction to the Study of the Chinese Language The series of articles put together in this Handbook were originally published in the Chinese Recorder. They were carefully read and studied by the Committee on the Training of Missionaries appointed in 1914 by the China Continuation Committee and some modifications have been made at the suggestion of various members of that Committee. The members of this Committee recommend these articles to the missionary body, and especially to those in charge of Language Schools, for the use ofi missionaries entering upon their special course of preparation for work in China. This series of articles will make an excellent intro duction to the study of the Chinese language. While the lack of facilities for carrying out the suggestions in this Handbook will render it less useful to those studying independently than to those able to attend a Language School, yet the Committee would recommend the Hand book to the attention also of those unable to study in an organized school. Signed for the members of the Special Committee on the Training of Missionaries. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This textbook provides a comprehensive scholarly introduction to Classical Chinese and its texts. Classical Chinese is the language of Confucius and Mencius and their contemporaries, who wrote the seminal texts of Chinese philosophy more than 2,000 years ago. Although it was used as a living language for only a relatively short time, it was the foundation of Chinese education throughout the Imperial age, and formed the basis of a literary tradition that continues to the present day. This book offers students all the necessary tools to read, understand, and analyse Classical Chinese texts, including: step-by-step clearly illustrated descriptions of syntactic features; core vocabulary lists; introductions to relevant historical and cultural topics; selected readings from classical literature with original commentaries and in-depth explanations; introductions to dictionaries and other reference works on the study of ancient China; and a guide to philological methods used in the critical analysis of Classical Chinese texts. The extensive glossary provides phonological reconstructions, word classes, English translations, and citations to illustrate usage, while the up-to-date bibliography serves as a valuable starting point for further research.

Outline of Classical Chinese Grammar is a comprehensive introduction to the syntactical analysis of classical Chinese. Focusing on the language of the high classical period, which ranges from the time of Confucius to the unification of the empire by Qin in 221, the book pays particular attention to the Mencius, the Lnyu, and, to a lesser extent, the Zuzhun texts. Outline of Classical Chinese Grammar starts with a brief historical overview and a discussion of the relation between the writing system and the phonology. This is followed by an outline of overall principles of word order and sentence structure. The next sections deal with the main sentence types nominal predicates, verbal predicates, and numberical expressions, which constitute a special type of quasiverbal predication. The final sections cover such topics as subordinate constitutents of sentences, nondeclarative sentence types, and complex sentences.

This supplemental volume continues the rigorous standard set forth in the main, three-volume Classical Chinese: A Basic Reader while reinforcing its linguistic lessons from carefully chosen representative works. Comprised of three parts--"Poetry," "Lyrics," and "Prose"--it presents texts, chronologically, that represent the artistic embodiment of China's Confucian and Taoist thought. Two introductions separately describe the structural and formal features of regulated verse and parallel prose; each genre is unique to Chinese literature yet both share common characteristics tempered by the Chinese language. The main text and its four supplementary volumes together represent the most comprehensive and authoritative textbook on the language, literature, philosophy, history, and religion of premodern China. Field-tested and fine-tuned for years in classroom settings by three members of the Chinese Linguistics Project at Princeton University, it is the definitive new resource for students and instructors of classical Chinese language or culture.

A history of Chinese literature from its early beginnings through the end of the Qing dynasty, this recent work from Professor Luo Yuming of China’s Fudan University seeks to provide, by adopting new theoretical perspectives and using updated research, a coherent, panoramic description of the development of Chinese literature and its major characteristics. As one of the very few English translations of such works by Chinese authors it seeks to inform the Western audience of the recent viewpoints and scholarship on the topic from a leading Chinese scholar. It may also provide some grounds of comparison and contrast with equivalent works in the West.
