Einer der wichtigsten literarischen Briefwechsel des 20. Jahrhunderts. Boris Pasternak las 1922 einen eben in Moskau erschienenen Gedichtband von Marina Zwetajewa. Sie war einen Monat zuvor nach Berlin emigriert. Ergriffen von ihren Gedichten schreibt er ihr und kündigt seine Reise nach Berlin an: "Ich möchte Sie unbedingt sehen". So beginnt einer der großen Dichterbriefwechsel des 20. Jahrhunderts. Er ist Werkstattbericht zweier Dichter der Moderne, die sich auf dem Höhepunkt ihrer Kraft befinden und mit den politischen und alltäglichen Bedingungen in Moskau und der Emigration kämpfen. Untrennbar damit verwoben, ist es auch die Geschichte einer Liebe, die 1926 in Pasternaks Frage gipfelt: "Soll ich jetzt zu Dir kommen oder in einem Jahr?" Für Pasternak ist Zwetajewa die Luft, in der er atmen kann und will. Für Zwetajewa ist Pasternak "das ganze Rußland": "Außer Ihnen habe ich kein Zuhause in Rußland". Als sie sich 1935 in Paris wiederbegegnen und Pasternak sich zur Sowjetunion bekennt, versiegt der Briefwechsel. Von den 200 für die russische Ausgabe 2004 edierten Briefen waren auf Deutsch bisher nur 35 bekannt. Endlich liegt das Zwiegespräch beider Dichter auch auf Deutsch vor.

Einer der bewegendsten deutschen Briefe und seine Folgen. Am 23. Mai 1920 findet Karl Kraus in der Wiener "Arbeiter-Zeitung" einen Brief Rosa Luxemburgs aus dem Breslauer Frauengefängnis. Sie beschreibt, wie sie durch die Gitter ihres Zellenfensters beobachtet, dass rumänische Büffel als Zugtiere von Soldaten bis aufs Blut geschlagen und gequält werden. Wenig später druckt er den Brief in der "Fackel" ab. Als eine anonyme Briefschreiberin gegen die "larmoyante Beschreibung" dieses Briefes an Sonitschka Liebknecht protestiert, antwortet Karl Kraus mit einer vehementen Polemik, die Walter Benjamin 1931 ein "Bekenntnis" nennt, "an dem alles erstaunlich" sei; auch "daß man diese stärkste bürgerliche Prosa des Nachkriegs in einem verschollenen Heft der "Fackel" zu suchen habe". Der "Büffelbrief" und seine Weiterungen werden hier mit einem Nachwort von Friedrich Pfäfflin mitgeteilt – bis hin zu dem Echo, das Rosa Luxemburgs Brief in den späten sechziger Jahren in einem Gedicht von Paul Celan findet.

Neben umfangreichen Studien, die ihn als Theoretiker ausweisen, publizierte Nikolaj Bucharin, seit der Gründung der Kommunistischen Internationale Mitglied des Exekutivkomitees, Chefredakteur der "Prawda", der Regierungszeitung "Iswestija" und Mitglied der Kommunistischen Akademie und der Akademie der Wissenschaften der UdSSR, regelmäßig in der Tagespresse. In der Sowjetunion und im Ausland hatte er als streitbarer und origineller Publizist einen Namen. Er wandte sich Fragen der Imperialismus-, Revolutions- und Staatstheorie, der Politischen Ökonomie des Sozialismus, der Philosophie, der Kultur- und Ideologietheorie zu. Nach seiner Ausschaltung aus dem politischen Leben der UdSSR im Jahre 1929 erschienen seine Artikel und Bücher nicht mehr regelmäßig, denn er galt als "Renegat und Abweichler". Dem Gefangenen des Parteiapparates war es bis zu seiner Verhaftung 1937 noch gestattet, auf dem Gebiet der Wissenschaftstheorie und -organisation zu arbeiten und sein Land auf Kongressen in Paris und London zu vertreten. Während der "Untersuchungshaft" im Inneren Gefängnis der Lubjanka verfaßte Bucharin, einer der Hauptangeklagten im 3. Moskauer Schauprozeß 1938 einen autobiographischen Roman, eine Abhandlung über den "Sozialismus und seine Kultur" und die "Philosophischen Arabesken". Das hier bibliographierte Lebenswerk umfaßt ca. 3.500 Titel und wird unter Einbeziehung des Bucharin-Fonds aus dem Russischen Staatsarchiv für Sozialpolitische Geschichte (RGASPI) nach Artikeln, monographischen Arbeiten sowie Bucharins Korrespondenz erstmals vollständig erschlossen. Zusätzlich sind mehr als 400 Hinweise auf Werkausgaben sowie Publikationen über Leben und Werk von Bucharin aus den Jahren 1988-2005 dokumentiert.
