In the correspondence between Rudolf Bultmann and his student Gunther Bornkamm, the two discuss central issues of New Testament studies which have not lost any of their significance. Among other topics, the interpretation of the last supper, the importance of the earthly Jesus for New Testament theology and the demythologization of the New Testament's proclamation are discussed. From the beginning, both correspondents belonged to the Confessing Church and were consistent advocates of freedom in theology and the church. Bultmann and Bornkamm made constructive use of the legacy of liberal theology, each in his own way: Bultmann with his programmatic of demythologization and Bornkamm with his subsequent participation in the research on the historical Jesus.

Doch nichts ist ungeheurer als der Mensch.“ Sophokles‘ Worte hallen in der Gegenwart besonders laut nach: Einerseits haben wir mit Hilfe unseres Verstandes kulturelle und technische Leistungen erbracht, die früheren Generationen kaum denkbar schienen. Andererseits bedrohen wir unser und das uns umgebende Leben inzwischen in einem Ausmaß, welches das Schlimmste befürchten lässt. Vor diesem Hintergrund führt nichts an Bildungsprozessen vorbei, die geleitet sind von einer Aufklärung des Menschen über sich selbst. Nach Immanuel Kant umfasst das Rätsel des Mensch-Seins folgende Fragen: „Was kann ich wissen?“, „Was soll ich tun?“, „Was darf ich hoffen?“ Nach Antworten suchen die Erkenntnistheorie und Metaphysik, die Ethik sowie die Theologie. Hans-Georg Wittigs pädagogische Anthropologie kreist um die drei kantischen Fragen und ist daher im Spannungsfeld der genannten Disziplinen angesiedelt. In Bezug auf das Wissen und Handeln gibt sie klare Antworten: Notwendig ist ein Denken, das neben der Perspektive der Zweckrationalität auch den Blick vernehmender Vernunft einnimmt. Ebenso unverzichtbar ist es, darauf zu pochen, dass für unser Tun objektive moralische Maßstäbe gelten. Offen bleibt die Frage, wie wir den göttlichen Grund unserer Existenz begreifen können.
