In the correspondence between Rudolf Bultmann and his student Gunther Bornkamm, the two discuss central issues of New Testament studies which have not lost any of their significance. Among other topics, the interpretation of the last supper, the importance of the earthly Jesus for New Testament theology and the demythologization of the New Testament's proclamation are discussed. From the beginning, both correspondents belonged to the Confessing Church and were consistent advocates of freedom in theology and the church. Bultmann and Bornkamm made constructive use of the legacy of liberal theology, each in his own way: Bultmann with his programmatic of demythologization and Bornkamm with his subsequent participation in the research on the historical Jesus.

Rudolf Bultmann is one of the most widely known but least read theologians of the twentieth century. He is famous as the one who "demythologized" the New Testament, but very few understand what he meant by this or how his hermeneutical program connects to the other areas of his theological project. Bultmann presents a unique challenge to readers, not only because of his radical theological inquiry but also because of the way his ideas are worked out over time, primarily through short, occasional writings that present complex issues in a disarmingly straightforward manner. In this introduction to his theology--the first of its kind in more than twenty years--David W. Congdon guides readers through ten central themes in Bultmann's theology, ranging from eschatology and dialectic to freedom and advent. By gaining an understanding of these themes, students of Bultmann will have the necessary tools to understand and profit from his writings. The result is not only an accessible guide for those encountering Bultmann for the first time but also a cohesive, systematic presentation of his thought for those wondering how his work might speak to our current context.

In the 1940s and 1950s, Albert Schweitzer was one of the best-known figures on the world stage. Courted by monarchs, world statesmen, and distinguished figures from the literary, musical, and scientific fields, Schweitzer was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1952, cementing his place as one of the great intellectual leaders of his time. Schweitzer is less well known now but nonetheless a man of perennial fascination, and this volume seeks to bring his achievements across a variety of areas—philosophy, theology, and medicine—into sharper focus. To that end, international scholars from diverse disciplines offer a wide-ranging examination of Schweitzer’s life and thought over the course of forty years. Albert Schweitzer in Thought and Action gives readers a fuller, richer, and more nuanced picture of this controversial but monumental figure of twentieth-century life—and, in some measure, of that complex century itself.

[Lines of Development in the Liberal Protestantism] If Protestantism has any desire to remain somehow compatible with an increasingly secular society, it would do well to reflect on its liberal traditions. Such a tradition provides theological insight, critical questions, and methodological approaches for our times. This volume is an attempt to reintroduce these traditions afresh. The volume combines studies about some of the great philosophical and theological thinkers within the liberal and enlightenment traditions of Protestantism. Thinkers such as Immanuel Kant, David Friedrich Strauß, Albert Schweitzer, and Rudolf Bultmann all make appearances. Their thoughts are first examined in their own context and then brought forward within a constructive discussion of our current moment. Moreover, this volume attempts to bring a new perspective to foundational theological themes – e. g., the plausibility of speech about God; the question of universal revelation; the relationship between faith and reason; and questions of death and eternal life – while developing new and fresh proposals for an enlightened Protestantism for our current times.
